Episode 45: DOOM - The Most Important Game of All Time?
Legion Gaming Podcast
10/25/24 • 75 min
We're continuing Horrorfest this month with a brand new episode about one of the most important games of all time - DOOM! Released in December 1993, it quickly became the biggest PC game of all time for its stunning graphics and sound, incredible level design, and ripping and tearing into any demon that stands in the Space Marine's way. We revisit the history of ID Software and Doom from the origins of the genre that it would ultimately define for decades to come to the development, release and the ports. It's impossible to overstate the impact and influence Doom would have on gaming and this episode was a great one to record.

Legion Gaming Podcast
10/11/24 • 75 min
It's October and our first episode cover the 1997 PS1 masterpiece Castlevania: Symphony of the Night! This was a massive departure from anything the Castlevania had previously done and it created an entirely new genre that has hundreds of games released every year. SotN is one of my favorite games of all time and in this episode we dive into the development history including its origins on the 32X! This was Deucy's first time actually finishing the first castle and he shares his experience and how this holds up 27 years later (you'll never guess....).

Legion Gaming Podcast
06/27/24 • 71 min
Our long awaited episode on Super Metroid is here! We invited our friend Vito, @8bitbarrister in Instagram, to talk about one of the best games ever released. The three of us consider Super Metroid as one of our favorite games of all time and we really enjoyed revisiting the game as it celebrates its 30th anniversary. Deucy also talks about how he's able to beat the game in just over an hour! Super Metroid would eventually influence Castlevania and the two now define an entire genre that's immensely popular to today. Don't forget to revisit Episodes 23 and 24 where we revisit the earlier Metroid games!

Legion Gaming Podcast
07/04/24 • 61 min
Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins is a game we've wanted to talk about for a looooong time and this week we finally made it happen! Our friend Vito, @8bitbarrister on Instagram, joins us once again to experience Super Mario Land 2 all over again. This gem of a GameBoy game was originally released in 1992 and it took Mario in a drastically different direction than the NES games. We talk about how Nintendo R&D1 wanted to make this the most unique Mario game ever by taking advantage of everything the GameBoy hardware offered. Wario also makes his first appearance ever in Mario Land 2 and we discovered what his favorite food was too. Press start to continue!

Episode 41: Jurassic Park (SNES/Genesis)
Legion Gaming Podcast
08/30/24 • 77 min
This week, Deucy and I dive back into the world of games based on movies with Jurassic Park for the Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis! Jurassic Park is one of the best movies ever made and there epitomized "blockbuster" in 1993. Naturally, many developers were desperate to get the license to what was guaranteed to be the year's biggest movie. The Super Nintendo version was developed by Ocean while the Genesis version was developed by BlueSky Software and these games could not be more different. We revisited both games and share our memories and experiences on how well both of these games hold up 31 years later with the Jurassic Park Classic Games Collection. Episode 40: The NES Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Trilogy
Legion Gaming Podcast
08/16/24 • 74 min
This week, we're going back to the beginnings of everyone's favorite heroes in a half shell with the NES TMNT trilogy! Deucy and I were playing the more recent Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Splintered Fate and we figured it was a perfect time to talk about the earlier games. We start in 1989 when the turtles were at their most popular and Konami (under Ultra Games) released the first game that was notorious for many reasons. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Arcade Game was a far better game and one of the best arcade conversions of the time. Deucy and I get into the development of the games and our memories of TMNT III: The Manhattan Project. This was a really great series of games to revisit, press start to continue!

Episode 43: TMNT IV: Turtles in Time, Hyperstone Heist, and Tournament Fighters
Legion Gaming Podcast
09/27/24 • 86 min
In episode 40, we covered the original NES trilogy of TMNT games and this week we're back covering the 16-bit games! This era of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle games is arguably the peak of all TMNT games. Turtles in Time was a sequel to the hit original arcade game and it was made even BETTER on the SNES and we cover the big differences between to the do and which one gets turned into turtle soup. We also cover Hyperstone Heist for the Genesis, which was a heavily changed port of Turtles in Time, and Deucy and I break down all three versions of Tournament Fighters. The NES, SNES, and Genesis versions are all drastically different and we breakdown each one and make the final call on the best one.

Episode 38: X-Men and Marvel - The Fighting Game Era and Crossover of the Century
Legion Gaming Podcast
07/19/24 • 124 min
With EVO, the biggest fighting game tournament in the world, happening this weekend and Capcom announcing "MARVEL vs. CAPCOM Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics", it's a great time to continue our deep dive into the X-Men and Marvel universe of games. This episode is dedicated to the fighting game era of Capcom's Marvel games covering Marvel Super Heroes all the way to 2017's Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite and we even cover the X-Men: Mutant Academy and Next Dimension games that Capcom didn't develop. We had a lot of fun with each of these games and it was shocking that Deucy had never played Marvel Super Heroes until now, so please enjoy as we take you for a ride.

Legion Gaming Podcast
08/02/24 • 93 min
Earlier this week, the Game Boy celebrated it's 35th anniversary after being released on July 31st, 1989. The Game Boy and Game Boy Color would go on to sell over 118 million units and are THE reason handheld gaming has evolved the way it has today with the Switch and Steam Deck. Deucy and I thought there's no better way to celebrate the iconic and influential handheld by sharing our top 10 favorite Game Boy and Game Boy Color games. We've got the Game Boy classics like Tetris and Super Mario Land 2 but you'll definitely hear some surprises in both of our lists.

This week, Deucy and I hit the gridiron with some of the best arcade football games in history! The NFL season has just started and while sports sims hold their place among the hardcore, arcade-style sports made the experience far more accessible. We start with the Tecmo Bowl series, from its origins in the arcade in the late 80s to becoming one of the most iconic sports games ever. We've also revisited the NFL Blitz and NFL Street series to talk about their histories and how some of the games hold up decades later.
