34. Vlad Dracula, the Impaler
Left Unread
10/04/21 • 76 min
This week, in our first ghoulish October episode, the LU Boys talk about one of history’s most misunderstood, troubled young men: Vlad III of Wallachia, more famously known as Vlad Tepes, or the Impaler (ooooh I wonder why...). Best remembered in the public eye as a purported inspiration behind the character of Count Dracula, we will dive a bit deeper into the man revered as one of the most important figures in medieval history.

Here's a Tip for Ya
Left Unread
10/17/24 • 66 min
This week we sat down to discuss the unveiling of Elon's super cool bartender robots, tipping culture in American restaurants and local ballot questions in that same vein, the potential debunking of the 'Blue Zone' theory, and the U.S. Government's bungling of Hurricane aid following a brutal storm season in the Southeast.

Hello from the gutters of New York City...
Join us for another American Haunting tale.
In the summer of 1976, a string of killings began in the New York City boroughs of Queens and the Bronx. Despite the modus operandi being similar throughout them, the police did not realize they had a string of serial murders until the following year. By the summer of 1977, the city was completely gripped in fear by these mysterious murders of young people in their cars, and yet nothing in the case made sense as descriptions of the assailants and composite sketches seemed to suggest there were multiple killers stalking the city with a 0.44-caliber revolver. What’s more, the killer(s) began taunting the police and press with cryptic letters, and over time, the killings would grow to resemble other killings across the country.
Was David Berkowitz the Son of Sam, or was he acting with a cult of Satanists stalking the American countryside?

Folks, we are re-entering the depths of the North Atlantic today to discuss a recent deep dive in Vanity Fair on the doomed OceanGate submersible Titan, its...ahem...enigmatic CEO and pilot Stockton Rush, and the implosion years in the making. We also follow this trail to some other gruesome events below the epipelagic.

This week we return to the Congo River Basin of the late 19th Century to discuss the establishment of the Congo Free State by Leopold II, King of the Belgians. Part one of this series, episode 118 of Left Unread, laid the groundwork for Leopold's machinations, and this week we start to see his plans take shape as a swathe of brutal violence engulfs the Congo region, and European profits begin to soar. Content Warning: This episode contains frank discussion of pretty brutal violence, racism, and colonialism.

25. The Opium Wars, pt. 1
Left Unread
07/30/21 • 78 min
Part 1 of 2 in the Opium Wars series.
You’ve heard about the wildly successful ‘War on Drugs’, right? Remember D.A.R.E.? ‘Just Say No’? Well what if we told you that the ‘anti-drug’ narrative pushed by Western governments isn’t really the whole story? What if instead of ‘Just Say No’, the motto was ‘You absolutely better say Yes or we’ll literally murder you lol’? What if governments were the ones selling the drugs? Oh boy, here we go again...
