Left of Skeptic
12/25/24 • 68 min
Happy Spooky Holiday Wednesday, dear friends! We’ve got a Christmas spectacular for you this year!
Kala talks about Mari Lwyd. This is essentially a creepy hobby horse used for drunken caroling. It’s every ex goth kid’s Christmas dream!
Then Brittany tells the tale of Père Fouettard. This French Anti-Santa travels along with Old Saint Nick punishing naughty children. He basically looks like Santa, but kinda dirty and in black instead of red. An ex-goth kid’s Christmas dream.
And we end the whole episode sharing some spooky Christmas Reddit stories that are sure to have you closing the blinds before you crawl into bed on Christmas night. We hope you all have a safe and happy holiday!

Happy Spooky Wednesday! We’re starting out this week with a listener request about a very interesting museum: The Iceland Phallological Museum. You read that right. It’s a museum all about penises. One exhibit focuses on the “units” of different cryptids and folklore creatures. Now our question isn’t, “Are these creatures real?” Our question has become, “Are these weenies real?” And Brittany talks about the supposedly most haunted home in Jamaica, The Rose Hall Great House. According to legend Annie Palmer, the "White Witch of Rose Hall", is said to haunt the grounds of the former sugar plantation. She murdered her husbands and tortured enslaved people. But how much of the Palmer legend is true?

Episode 208: Jack the Ripper

Happy Spooky Wednesday, folks!
We're wrapping up 2025 True Crime January with Jack the Ripper, one of the biggest unknowns in the genre. And we've got a special guest joining us for the occasion: Sean Moria! That's right, Kala's husband hopped in the studio to discuss the unidentified serial killer who terrorized the Whitechapel district of London in 1888. Considered one of the greatest mysteries of the past, Jack the Ripper has inspired many shows, movies, and music in pop culture (including Sean's band Gnarwals).
Is the identity of the killer the only mystery here? Or have these tragic events brought about some of the ghosts who wander the London streets?
Important Timestamps:
When Brittany starts her story (we've got a decently long intro this week): 7:30 or possibly 12:04 When Kala starts her story (skip the True Crime bits): 51:00 or possibly 55:30

Happy Spooky Wednesday, folks! It's opposite day at Left of Skeptic. First up, Kala talks about Jinny Bingham's ghost in Camden Town, London. Also known as Mother Damnable and Mother Redcap, Jinny was a 1600s woman who was known in her small village for witchcraft and murder! But was she really a witch, or just a woman with a whole lot of bad luck. Either way, it seems her misfortune carries into the present day, haunting the location where her cottage once stood. And Brittany gets midwesty by talking about two different locations in Battle Creek, Michigan. A haunted apartment complex called Colombia Court is dealing with more than your average pests. Residents can expect to deal with doors opening on their own, lights turning on and off, whispers and disembodied voices, footsteps, and flying cookware! And in a Battle Creek Cemetery, there is a statue that is definitely not the Virgin Mary, and locals claim that it cries. We finish the whole episode off with some Reddit stories from Wisconsinites that claim they've had their own paranormal encounters. Editor's Note: Sadly, it looks like the Wonder Bar in Milwaukee closed last year. It's now theBiersal Tavern. Let us know if it's still haunted!
But #FunFact it looks like the Wonder Bar in Madison might be haunted too >> https://archive.jsonline.com/features/travel/madisons-wonder-bar-steakhouse-has-mob-history-ghosts-b99380667z1-281121762.html

Happy Spooky Wednesday! We've got a very special guest this week: Left of Skeptic Super Fan Gina! We start the episode with the third annual Kala's seeeester birthday request: haunted campsites. Kala talks about Lake Morena in San Diego, Big Moose Lake in the Adirondacks, Crystal Lake Campground in Los Angeles County, and Cameron Park in Waco. Each recreation area is haunted in different ways, but they all have tragic occurrences in their history that may be the cause of the hauntings. Pick your poison. Do you want the creepy, levitating figure of a man whose disembodied footsteps have been heard all around the property? Or do you want to experience phantom hands tugging at your clothes and hair? Or do you want to witness the misty figure of a devastated woman who was betrayed by an ex-lover? Your choice could determine the direction of your next road trip! And Brittany tells us all about Kasha House of Kaimuki, our first ever Hawaii location! Considered one of the most well known urban legends on the island, the house looks relatively normal, but looks can be deceiving. A Kasha, a man-eating ghost from Japanese folklore, is said to reside inside the home. Other theories behind the haunting include a ghoul who feeds on the dead, and a cat-like demon. All three versions have one thing in common: insatiable hunger for blood and corpses. So, that's pleasant. With such dark subject matter, do you think we've scared Gina away for good? Of course not! She's giving skeptic scale ratings right along with us!
Thank you so much for joining us, Gina! Make sure to check out her recommendation for another great podcast to check out: The Night Owl Podcast out of Austin, TX!
And Happy Birthday Seeeeeeeeeeester Sara! Have the best time camping! Let us know if you see any ghosts!
And thanks to all of you listeners! We love and appreciate you very much!

It's not episode 69... but almost.
This Spooky Wednesday, Brittany starts us off by finishing her two part story about Kilkenny, Ireland. Not only does she complete the tale of Dame Alice Kyteler, but she also talks about multiple other locations in Kilkenny that show it is an extremely haunted town. And with all these spooky haunted tales, Kala still seems to be the most bothered by the idea of the punishment via Catholic mass 3 times a day. And Kala takes us back home to Minnesota where she discusses the Fitzgerald Theater in St. Paul, MN. This beautiful, old theater is said to be haunted by a man named Ben who froze to death while working at the theater. This story has hidden ceilings, strange old bottles, and flying plaster. And they use the word "apport" several times, but they're still not sure they're using that word correctly.
EDIT: Through her various connections, Brittany was able to message Tom Campbell, who was the manager of The Fitzgerald for 27 years. She was told, "It wasn't like no one knew the balcony was up there. People used to go up and drink up there. They just covered it over with an office style drop ceiling. As to Ben, the story goes that he was a stage hand back in the vaudeville days and was a heavy drinker. One night after too many drinks he stumbled back to the theater but it was locked so he crashed in the alley next to the theater, where the atrium is now and froze to death. I might be able to find the story about the note, but it's all pretty bogus stuff."

Episode 107: "That's suspicious. That's weird."

Happy Spooky Wednesday, folks! This week we’ve got a roller coaster of feelings for you! First up, Kala talks about Grey Gardens in East Hampton, NY. A 1970s documentary brought this home into the spotlight when Big and Little Edie Beale lived there. Ghosts have roamed the building for decades including a woman who loved gardening on the grounds and an ex-lover who used to access the building ladder-style. And Brittany tells 5 tragic yet beautiful stories of people who tried to save loved ones from beyond the grave. They’re sure to leave you saying “aw” in a sad way and then “aw” in a happy way. And we end the episode with some suspicious UFO activity that’s been happening in the Northland for the last five years that might have you looking out your window at night wondering what is really out there.
