Leaving Eden Podcast
Leaving Eden LLC
A podcast about the IFB Cult as told by survivor Sadie Carpenter, with her co-host Gavri'el HaCohen. This podcast covers the IFB, the history of the Independent Fundamental Baptist movement, other cults, other religions, and the real and present threat that cults and cult ideologies pose to society as a whole. Our goal is to promote freedom of mind, freedom of thought, and freedom of religion.

In the pilot episode of the Leaving Eden Podcast, we meet our hosts, cult survivor and cult expert Sadie Carpenter, and her co-host, Gavriel HaCohen. We get the overview of Sadie's life story and learn about what the difference is between a cult and a religion. Gavri'el introduces the homework section, in which Sadie is assigned media that she missed out on growing up in a cult. This episode's assignment is the first six episodes of Pokemon Indigo League.

Ep. 153: Created To Be His Helpmeet by Debi and Michael Pearl
Leaving Eden Podcast
10/16/23 • 125 min
In this episode, we review "Created To Be His Helpmeet," by Debi and Michael Pearl. From the authors of "To Train Up A Child," This book is a popular guide for christian fundamentalist women, instructing them how to be submissive wives. This book advises women to minimize themselves and to be a person without needs or wants or desires, and to surrender their personal identity to be of service to their husband.
TW: In general we talk about a lot of potentially triggering topics on this show, including but not limited to suicide and mental health, racism, misogyny, PTSD and PTSD symptoms, child abuse, mental, physical, and sexual abuse, and spiritual abuse including guilt, shame, and fear. In most episodes we’ll mention at least a few of these topics, but we try very hard to avoid graphic detail unless it’s relevant to the story we’re telling, and we do our best to give the audience a heads-up before going into detail on any of these topics. This episode contains extensive discussion of domestic violence and emotional abuse including details, discussion of submission, and discussion of marital rape. There’s really no way to get around repeating those kind of details because it’s necessary to show just how bad this book is, but we will give a heads up before we do so anyone who needs to use that skip ahead button can do so.

Ep. 139: Through Gates Of Splendor: The Leaving Eden Drag Brunch (feat. Dinah House-Fire) (Pride Month / Purity Culture / LGBTQ)
Leaving Eden Podcast
06/26/23 • 102 min
On today's episode, friend of the pod and drag performer extraordinaire Dinah House-Fire joins Sadie and Gavi to talk about Jim and Elizabeth Elliot. Elizabeth is the author of the book "Through Gates of Splendor," which chronicled her husband's death during an ill-advised missions trip to spread christian colonialism in Ecuador. Elizabeth's later writings were instrumental in the advent of purity culture throughout christian evangelicalism. Subsequent examinations of Jim's journals and Elizabeth's personal writings, however, suggest that there is a sadder story, and lead us to as the question, is purity culture just internalized homophobia and repressed sexuality? Tune in to hear our thoughts.

Ep. 150: Keep Your Word And Obey Your Father: Deconstructing The Story of Jepthah
Leaving Eden Podcast
09/25/23 • 101 min
In this episode, we deconstruct the story of Jepthah and his daughter. This is a bible story that was used to great effect during Sadie's fundamentalist upbringing as a tool to control people and as a tool to demand obedience. The details of the story, however, vary quite dramatically from the way Sadie remembers it being told when she was growing up. By looking at different interpretations, we are able to uncover a serious hypocrisy that exists within fundamentalist teaching.

Ep. 70: IBLP Advanced Seminar / Michelle Duggar... Wears Pants? (Fundie Snark / ATI / Bill Gothard / Duggars)
Leaving Eden Podcast
01/31/22 • 112 min
Sadie and Gavri'el explore the absurdity that is Bill Gothard's Institute for Basic Life Principles Advanced Seminar. They play a fun Etiquette guessing game, and talk through the truly loony theology and logic jumps that make this book possible. Then, they discuss Michelle Duggar's SHOCKING decision to (possibly) wear pants in public.
This episode was made possible by Stephanie Rice, who sent us a copy of this book. Thank you so much Stephanie, we could not have done this without you.
