Learning From The Edges
Michelle Parry-Slater
The world of work is full of friction. Departments work in silos. Work gets stuck. Teams find workplaces are not as easeful as they could or should be. And in all of this human beings are caught in the challenges, resulting in poor work, mental health worries and worse. As a research project, Learning From The Edges will look at the edges of work, where friction exists and explore what gets in the way of work and of learning. Why is there friction? How can work be more fruitful for organisations and people? What barriers do people have and what practical ways they can overcome those barriers? Episode #11 Our brain: understanding and fine-tuning our key work tool. With guests Hilary Scarlett, Phil Willcox & Stella Collins.
Learning From The Edges
08/22/23 • 48 min
Friction is often thought of negatively, however, let's ponder how friction may indeed be an essential element we all need in order to perform at our peak.
In this podcast we discuss our feelings, emotions and how we physically respond to different situations.
Whether aware of it, or not, our brain is constantly stimulated and reacting to the environment we are in; be it a busy office, full of noise and energy, or conversely a remote location, a place for focus in our isolated setting. Isn't it interesting how both can be equally full of distraction - which is also often a source of friction.
No matter our chosen or prescribed workplace, ultimately how we think and feel impacts how we perform in all aspects of life.
Join us in our latest episode where we explore how people function and what we can do to influence our performance, as we dive in to explore how neuroscience, our bodies and our behaviours play a key role in all of our personal development.

Episode #10 Is Curiosity the Missing Ingredient for Growth? With guest Donna Ward-Higgs.
Learning From The Edges
08/09/23 • 46 min
Do we need to look beyond Learning and Development being a training and compliance function of a business?
This week join Donna and Michelle diving into a feast of conversation to fire your brain.
With ideas such as the need for creating working cultures that think about the friction we have, as a catalyst for crafting better relationships which in turn impact performance, productivity and our day to day lives.
The episode poses powerful questions for us to consider;
By empowering people to challenge and ask questions in a positive and empathetic way, can we harness the power of curiosity, in order to explore the friction within work head on in a positive manner?
Could using conversation about friction in itself allow us to take advantage of the by-product of better relationships and working practices to be the fuel we need to move forward?

Learning From The Edges
06/27/23 • 45 min
Work isn't always going to be sunshine and rainbows, but it doesn't have to be doom and gloom either.
In our first one to one conversation on this podcast, this week the discussion with Liggy Webb moves around on how assumptions and unspoken communication can cause unwanted friction, plus explores the idea of working with people that challenge us.
Thinking about how we can use empathy to create a healthy conflict rather than an unwanted combat.

Episode #5 Viewing problems from the right angle. With guests Gent Ahmetaj & Ross Garner.
Learning From The Edges
05/30/23 • 48 min
Should we simply provide a solution that is being asked for?
For example, if the client wants elearning, should we simply whip up another course?
Or, should we try and explore the deeper issues at play? Taking in the different perspectives and impacts that should be considered before suggesting our solution?
In this episode Michelle, Gent and Ross explore how they go about trying to support organisations with solving and measuring the problems they are presented with.

Bonus Episode (Part 2) Crafting a Culture That Works
Learning From The Edges
10/26/23 • 34 min
Welcome to this second bonus episode of the Learning From The Edges podcast, where we're switching the format to hear from regular host Michelle as she is interviewed for an article in the Belgian Learning and Development Training Newspaper.
In this interview by Robbert Flyppo, we continue from bonus episode 1 to explore our perspectives on learning culture, uncovering practical strategies, and highlight learning culture's pivotal role in organisational growth and employee development.
Whilst not originally recorded for a podcast, we felt the insights and ideas complement both Michelle's live Keynote at Stimulearning's L&D Talks, and Robbert's magazine article. As multi-modal learning options are part of a socialised learning culture, we are living our truth by sharing this second episode as a deviation from the usual pod.
Below are links to the full article, the interviewer and other resources that were mentioned in the creation of this episode.
This interview was recorded to produce an article for the Belgian magazine Leren & Ontwikkelen Opleidingskrant Volume 17 Edition 61 (Learning and Development Training Newspaper). The article can be found on pages 31-33 at this link www.bedrijfsopleidingen.be/documenten/opleidingskrant/opleidingskrant_nl61.pdf
The interviewer is Robbert Flypo www.linkedin.com/in/robbert-flypo-042907141
Robbert is a senior L&D Specialist at Paulig, an international company in the food industry. A teacher who, after his studies, didn’t find the way back to school and instead started his journey in the wondrous world of L&D. His mission: to spice up ‘a life full of flavour’ with lifelong learning using practical know-how and empowering local teams. His current focus is improving the on-the-job training across all Paulig production sites.

Learning From The Edges
10/17/23 • 47 min
Join us in a thought-provoking conversation as we unravel the potential and pitfalls of personality profiling tools in Learning and Development. While these tools offer valuable insights, we'll explore why relying on them alone can be limiting. Is it a case of 'don't box me in' or do they set people free to be themselves?
This week we challenge our thinking towards a holistic approach that combines profiling tools with a deeper understanding of individuals, ensuring development practitioners make informed decisions that go beyond mere judgments and truly enhance personal and professional development.
