Ep.44: Learning about leadership from Star Trek & other popular culture

For those who know me, you will understand how excited I was about recording this episode. It's one where two of my great passions collide: Star Trek and Leadership. Joined by guest, leadership expert, consultant and founder of the Starfleet Leadership Academy, @Jeff Akin. At some point we fell into a wormhole and/or temporal rift and completely lost track of time debating which is the best Star Trek episode/Captain/film.... but I'm pleased to say we did make it back onto the topic of leadership.Jeff has some great insights to share and this one is well worth a listen. If you'd like to learn more about the Starfleet Leadership Academy then check out his website: https://www.starfleetleadership.academy/ If you're interested in learning more about how to lead with integrity, head over to our website at https://live.leadernotaboss.co.uk/free If you enjoy this episode please take a few minutes to leave a review, every bit of feedback is appreciated and helpful.

Are you fulfilled at work? As a leader? As a business-owner?

It's not a loaded question, but it is an important one. This week on Leading with Integrity, I'll be chatting with Business Coach, Author, and Entrepreneur Robin Waite, who shares his journey from running a marketing agency to becoming a business coach. Key themes of the conversation include the importance of personal fulfillment, the challenges of corporate life, and the need for a supportive work environment.

The discussion touches on the effectiveness of corporate well-being initiatives, the potential benefits of a four-day work week, and the limitations of the traditional education system in preparing individuals for success in business (and life - and I'll confess to you now, I may get on my soapbox a bit here!!).

We also explore common mistakes that lead to business failures, why effective business planning is crucial; and what that can look like - it's not always a flash slide deck or 400-tab financial model. Leadership lessons are shared, we talk about trust and autonomy in management, and some inspiring examples of effective leadership.

It's a big conversation about big topics and there's some vital lessons & advice here for leaders and founders alike.

Do you often have disagreements at work or with friends?

Have you put much thought into the way leaders and colleagues should disagree, or how to do so without disrespecting each other?

Central to today's episode is an idea that is too easily forgotten in the heat of the moment with all of the modern context and stresses: it’s ok to disagree with someone. Disagreement doesn’t have to mean animosity, disrespect isn’t necessary to explain an opposing view. And perhaps most importantly, the role of conflict or disagreement isn't necessarily about bringing the other person to 'your side' or persuading them they are wrong.

This question is pivotal to effective leadership, great leaders recognise the value in opposing views, see the benefits of healthy confrontation, and are active in the way they encourage and develop these things within their teams. My guest today is Philip Blackett, a consultant and entrepreneur who previously has worked with big companies including FedEx, Goldman Sachs, and Bank of America. Philip has authored several books, including "Disagree without Disrespect: How to Respectfully Debate with Those who Think, Believe, and Vote Differently From You" which is incredibly relevant!

This week I'm speaking with HR Professional, Katie Howard, who's on a mission to put the FUN back into HR. Katie shares some of the wild stories, as well as some enlightening and entertaining ones from a career in HR spanning government, corporate, and consulting. We talk about the red flags to watch out for in companies and in leaders, the pace of change, what great leadership looks like. One of the big topics that we discovered a mutual interest in was the changes in work and workplaces resulting from generational shifts, and this became a bit of a theme of the episode as we explore the differences, trends and stereotypes of Gen X, Millennials and later, and what the opportunities and challenges involved are. Katie had some insightful thoughts on how leaders need to be able to speak to every generation if they're to successfully maintain a functioning team.

What does resilience mean to you? In the latest episode of Leading with Integrity, I'm joined by guest Catherine Hicks for the second in a mini-series on resilience and building resilient teams.

We'll be chatting the themes of leadership, resilience, and burnout, particularly in the context of the pandemic and from Catherine's own journey as a design consultant and leader. There's a focus on the importance of service-oriented leadership and the need for compassion in the workplace, the nuances of resilience, the challenges of maintaining mental health, and the importance of setting boundaries in a demanding work culture.

We share personal experiences that have shaped each of our leadership styles, including the role of resilience and the impact of supportive management. Catherine talks about her experiences navigating chaotic work environments, the role of stress in personal and team growth, and the importance of fostering a culture of respect and open communication within teams.

Catherine has a pretty unique perspective on resilience, and some great leadership lessons too.

What are you doing to look after your people's well-being?

In part 3 of this month's mini-series, I'll be talking with Andrew Ronchetto about resilience in the workplace, the need for leaders to listen to their teams, and why companies should integrate wellness into thier business strategies. We explore Andrew's personal journey towards understanding the balance between work and wellness, the role of technology in enhancing workplace health, and the significance of creating a safe environment for mental health discussions, and how all of this connects to building more resilient teams.

It's a wide conversation that also touches on generational shifts in workplace loyalty, the long-term impacts of leadership decisions on organizational culture, complexities of organizational change, and the importance of trust, transparency, and vulnerability in leadership.

Plenty of practical tips for leaders here on fostering resilience within their teams. Loved this chat, thank you again to Andrew!
