Leadership in Action

There has been a massive myth built up around the ‘natural born leader’ and what specific traits define someone as one. Clemencia Herrera is breaking down that myth and giving everyone some great advice on how to think about themselves and their teams. You’ll learn what you need to do to become a better leader, what leadership really means, and the importance of being willing to learn, no matter what your title is.

Takeaways:

  • Anyone can become a great leader, regardless of personality, it just requires lots of practice. There is no such thing as a natural leader.
  • It’s important to be open to trying new things, without the fear of failing because regardless if you succeed or not, you will learn something from the experience.
  • Being a good leader is about being able to motivate people to accomplish the team’s goal and getting others to buy into that goal.
  • Becoming a great leader requires a lot of self awareness and a great willingness to not only learn about yourself but also to work on yourself.
  • Leadership is not just about creating a process and then never changing it. You as a leader need to adjust to the evolving needs of your team and the business.
  • As a leader, you need to take the time and expend the effort to work on yourself and develop your own mental toughness.

Focusing on the Followers - Bill Flynn - Leadership in Action- Episode #029

Everyone is always trying to sell you their simple tricks, tips, or habits that leaders must have to be great, but there is no one perfect process for leadership. Bill Flynn breaks down the myths around leadership while drawing on his immense experience to provide you with what really matters in reaching your vision, that being the followers. Learn how to increase buy-in, where to turn to for solutions, and what to look for when hiring for your team.

Takeaways:

  • Leadership is not a repeatable concept. There is not a concrete set of principles that someone can follow and be defined as a good leader. You cannot claim leadership, it must be bestowed upon you by your followers.
  • To become a leader, you must create something compelling and have courage. People want to follow something that is compelling, this could be a vision, personality, etc. Leaders need the courage to push the vision despite the strong headwinds.
  • Leaders also need the courage to give up some amount of control over their vision to their followers. In order to grow, your followers need to learn as they go and they will make mistakes, but that is just a necessary part of the process.
  • As a leader, you have to be yourself. Don’t try and copy what someone like Steve Jobs or Elon Musk did, be yourself. Along with that, don’t try to change your employees, try to find what they are best at and let them excel at it.
  • Write down a vivid vision so people can see what it is and decide whether they want to be a part of that or not. If your employees believe in the vision, they will be willing to go to great lengths to help you accomplish your vision.
  • A good follower will believe what the leader believes but will offer different opinions on how to accomplish the vision. These diverse voices are the ones you want on your senior leadership team.
  • Ask your team for a solution to the problem before you tell them what you think your solution would be. The leader doesn’t always have to have the answer and this will encourage more input from your team.

Educating Your Employees - Ryan Bennett - Leadership in Action- Episode #031

While some people may think that to be a successful entrepreneur you need a college degree or an MBA, this simply isn’t the case! Ryan Bennett has found great success in the trades with his business and now he’s sharing some great advice for how to interact with your employees and grow your company. You’ll learn all about finding what your employees are best at, why you need to communicate the opportunities for advancement within your company, and how to find more time for you to work on the business.

Takeaways:

  • You don’t need an MBA or even a college degree to be an entrepreneur and be successful! There are many great opportunities in trades and they have openings in the many vertical layers that support the entire business.
  • As an owner, you need to find what your employees are best at doing and utilize them in ways that personally and professionally benefit the employees while also benefiting the business.
  • Your employees need to know that there are more opportunities to learn and grow available to them within the business.
  • One way to find what your employees are really good at is to work side by side with them. Another way is to communicate with them and ask what they really want out of their career.
  • When a new employee is coming in, make sure they know that whatever task they start out doing is not the only thing they’ll ever do. Show them how to do other tasks and show them you are willing to teach them to do anything they are willing to learn.
  • As an entrepreneur, you need to allow your employees to solve problems on their own, without your involvement. While they may make mistakes, they need to learn from the experience and will never be able to if you try to solve every problem by yourself.
  • Put aside time every day to allow yourself to think outside of the box and get in touch with mentors.
