What’s it all about?Wireless Charging!! A concept that blows the mind of some, and yet it’s here and in operation. I met Andy Daga at a conference we were both speaking at, and I’ve wanted to get him onto the podcast ever since. From working on the Space Station, to working on irradicating fuel stations, Andy has a fascinating background, and company doing amazing things. I hope you enjoy the episode.About Andy DagaAndy is the founder and President and CEO of Momentum Dynamics. Andy’s fascinating story takes him from his birthplace of Brooklyn, NY, through Ithaca NY where his family developed the best Italian Restaurant in town through Hawaii, degrees in structural and civil engineering, architecture and space science and technology, ground-breaking work at NASA and his current role at Momentum Dynamics. Prior to founding Momentum Dynamics, Andy was a leading consultant to the aerospace industry and contributed to the design of the International Space Station solar power array system, the Mars Pathfinder program, and future mission planning studies with NASA and the US Department of Defense.Andy will admit that this layered journey wasn’t fully planned, but nor did it happen by accident: as a child, Andy would travel with his family from his home in Brooklyn to visit their extended family in Philadelphia, PA. This route took him through New Jersey and past the bleak refineries of Route 95. As a lover of architectural beauty, the outdoors and being obsessive about ‘all things efficiency’, the New Jersey oil refineries were the antithesis of everything Andy wanted the world to be. Fast forward to Andy’s time at NASA. He came upon the idea of inductive charging while mulling on ways to save cable weight on the International Space Station and future Mars missions. Why employ heavy cabling to carry electrons when it could be done efficiently through a vacuum or even the air itself? Out of this thought was born Momentum Dynamics. Through his varied experiences Andy has developed a strong capacity to identify engineering talent and manage multidisciplinary engineering and business teams. Andy is a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) where he serves on a number of standards committees. He believes that every precious piece of our finite resources should be fully valued and carefully spent. He envisions a world of zero emissions, zero cables

What’s it all about?Hydrogen vs Batteries!! Not at all. We’re (Clean) technology agnostic here. The challenges of climate change and biodiversity loss are enormous, and we need all the tools in the armoury to stand a chance. That said, it’s important we use the right tool for the right job, and that’s something I discuss with Phil Caldwell, CEO of Ceres Power, what is the best use case for fuel cells and hydrogen. We touch on the different challenges and advantages of leading a listed company, and the critical importance of talent. About Phil Caldwell: Phil Caldwell was appointed Chief Executive of Ceres Power in September 2013. Under his leadership Ceres has grown into a world-class clean energy technology business addressing climate change and air quality. Ceres has grown from £50 million to more than £1 billion market capitalisation creating over 300 engineering and technology jobs in the UK. Phil has been instrumental in positioning Ceres as an asset-light licensing business; establishing partnerships with significant global engineering and technology players, such as Bosch in Germany, Weichai in China and Doosan in South Korea, using its proprietary Solid Oxide fuel cell technology which can use existing fuels such as natural gas, biofuels and also pure hydrogen to meet the urgency for low carbon power systems in industry, data centres, transportation and everyday living. Alongside its core fuel cell power applications Ceres is also developing Solid Oxide Electrolysers to produce high efficiency green hydrogen as a potential pathway to decarbonise industrial processes. Phil has worked in the fuel cell industry for 17 years. He started his career in the Electrochemical Technology Business within ICI. He has a Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering from Imperial College and an MBA from IESE Barcelona. Prior to joining Ceres he was Commercial Director at Intelligent Energy developing PEM fuel cells for mainly automotive applications. About Ceres Power:Ceres Power is a world-leading developer of next generation solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) and electrochemical technology. Its asset-light, licensing model has seen it establish partnerships with some of the world’s largest engineering and technology companies, such as Weichai in China, Bosch in Germany, Miura in Japan, and Doosan in South Korea, to develop systems and products that address climate change and air quality challenges for transportation, industry, data ce

What’s it all about?
The perhaps surprising insurtech solution to unlocking innovation and scaling for clean technology deployment. We've often discussed how business model innovation can be as important if not more so, than technological innovation. Fundability and risk can be inhibitors, can insurance innovation solve that problem? Take a listen as I explore this topic the with co-founder of Insurtech Gateway.
About Stephen Brittain:
Stephen co-founded the Insurtech Gateway in 2016, using his 15 years of innovation experience to help bring disruptive insurtech businesses like FloodFlash, By Miles, Collective Benefits and IBISA to market. Previously, as Hambro Perks first Creative Director, he supported their growing portfolio (including Sipsmiths, Laundrapp, Takumi, TheDots) through early-stage development and testing. This, combined with previous agency projects (including Native, SeymourPowell, BBC, Nike, DEFRA) gave Stephen a deep understanding of startups, strategic innovation and translating this to investors. As an avid designer and entrepreneur himself, Stephen has won several awards including Sunday Times Ski Product of the Year, for his map business MountMaps. Stephen is now focused on supporting Insurtech Gateway’s founders tackling complex climate and social challenges.
About Insurtech Gateway:
The specialist insurtech investor. Insurtech Gateway is on a mission to support founders tackling complex climate and social challenges.
The Gateway incubates early-stage founders to de-risk their regulatory and insurance metrics. Founded in 2016, the Gateway has authorised incubators in London and Sydney, supporting 28 portfolio companies, live in 97 countries, working with 26 insurers. The Gateway would like to meet early-stage founders with game-changing ideas or products, and progressive (re)insurers who are interested in collaboration.

What’s it all about? It’s great to hear about start-ups, and those journeys, but we all know scale is what we want, it’s not easy, but you can have more impact and do more ‘good’ when you have scale. I’ve seen Anesco grow over the last ten years and make a real impact in the deployment of solar and energy efficiency in particular. It was great to have time to speak to the (relatively) new CEO Mark Futyan about the company culture, growth and plans for the future, as well has his thoughts on the path to Net Zero.About Mark Futyan: Mark Futyan is CEO of Anesco, a renewable energy business focused on solar PV, battery storage and energy efficiency. He is committed to championing the low carbon agenda and believes that Anesco have a key role to play in enabling investment in low carbon infrastructure. Since being appointed as CEO in February 2020, Mark has re-focused the organisation on its core services offering, established a new market optimisation business line and overseen a change in ownership. Prior to Anesco, Mark worked for Centrica, Interconnector UK, Booz Allen and Air Products. Mark held a number of executive roles at Centrica, which included running the international power generation and storage portfolio, advising the CEO and optimising the 7,000 strong UK residential services team. He holds a Chemical Engineering degree from Cambridge and an MBA from Columbia Business School. Mark is married with three children and enjoys cycling and mountaineering.About Anesco:Anesco is a market leader in renewable energy, managing the development, design, construction, maintenance and market optimisation of renewable energy and energy efficiency projects. The company has constructed more than 100 solar farms, while its O&M service is monitoring more than 24,000 sites. Anesco was the first company in the UK to achieve subsidy-free solar; first to introduce utility-scale energy storage and first to co-locate energy storage with existing solar sites to meet the ROC requirements. To date, the technologies the company has deployed and manage are generating over 1GW of renewable energy.Social links: Mark Fuytan on Linked In: https://www.linkedin.com/in/mark-futyan/ Anesco Website: www.anesco.co.uk Anesco on Twitter: https://twitter.com/AnescoLtd Anesco on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/anesco-limited/About Hyperion Executive Search:Hyperion are a specialist executive search firm working with some of the most innovative

What’s it all about?Disruption, I love cleantech disruption, and if ever there was a market that needed disruption it was car rental. On so many levels. And that is exactly what Aidan McClean has done. We talk about that, but also the transition from corporate to start-up life, the challenges of starting from scratch, fundraising, hiring, family life, EV and Clean Energy myths and host of other topics in this fascinating chat. My first podcast recorded in a Tesla Model 3 too.About Aidan McClean: Aidan McClean is an entrepreneur and clean technology investor who co-founded the world’s first all-digital all-electric car rental company, UFODRIVE. He is passionate about exposing the truths beyond the hype around the rise of electric vehicles. His extensive research led to him writing his explosive book ELECTRIC REVOLUTION, published in March 2022. A keen cyclist and outdoorsman, Aidan was not an early adopter or advocate for electric vehicles, or particularly aware of environmental matters. However, the more he researched air pollution, climate change and the impact of fossil fuel-powered vehicles, the more passionate he became about the role electric vehicles will play in averting the impending climate disaster.About UFO DriveAidan left behind a successful 25-year career in the financial services sector in 2017 to found UFODRIVE with his business partner and COO, Renaud Marquet. UFODRIVE was born out of a desire to help accelerate the move to clean mobility and a passion for great customer experience, guided by the following principles: easy booking; no queuing; no paperwork; great cars; transparent, all-inclusive, simple pricing; no confusing insurance options; no refuelling; and great value for money.McClean and Marquet set out to examine the car rental business in detail and understand what customers really want. In tandem they studied the coming revolution in electric cars. By combining the smartphone revolution with the coming electric car revolution, UFODRIVE has developed something unique. Its car rental location - the ‘UFO Landing Bay’ - is where customers can arrive and drive – all with just their smartphone. UFODRIVE now has 18 locations across 8 countries in Europe with many more opening, including in North America and beyond. In February 2022, UFODRIVE announced a $19m series A investment round, led by Hertz. Following blind-tests of the UFODRIVE platform, the global car rental giant had decided that it was the

Green Hydrogen! It’s hard to do or read anything in the sustainable technology sector without hearing about Green Hydrogen at present. What part does hydrogen have to play in the clean energy and mobility transitions? I’ve been working recently with hydrogen founders and entrepreneurs and I’m really intrigued as to where and how we could or should utilise hydrogen in the decarbonisation mission we share in the sector. Having had CEOs of fuel cell and hydrogen flight companies on the podcast recently, this week we hear from a hydrogen electrolyser start up founder about her opinion and her areas of focus, as well as her journey and experience as a leading woman in the cleantech sector.About Vaitea CowanVaitea Cowan believes green hydrogen is the future of energy. After being named "Women Leader" in the World Bank Intern Program, and winning case competitions in University, she moved to Thailand. She met her cofounders in Chiang Mai and helped make the Phi Suea House a communication and collaboration platform for hydrogen in Southeast Asia. Shortly after, they cofounded Enapter, which scales the production of hydrogen generators. The team has grown from 11 to over 130 in 3 years. She has the clear intention of inspiring and hiring more women. She is on the Forbes Under 30 in Energy 2020 list and has won several awards for Enapter. Today, she spearheads the communications efforts from Berlin. As a Pacific Islander, her personal mission is to provide clean energy independence to Polynesia.About EnapterEnapter is an award-winning company manufacturing highly efficient, modular hydrogen generators based on Anion Exchange Membrane (AEM) electrolysis technology.
