Leaders & Legacies

Leaders & Legacies

Craig Andrews

The Leaders & Legacies Podcast celebrates leaders who are making a difference beyond themselves. It was inspired from events in 2021 when the host, Craig Andrews went into a 6-week coma. Even after waking up, his brain was scrambled for another two weeks. When his mind cleared, his wife started telling him how his team stepped up and ran the company without him. Freelancers reached out to his team and offered to do whatever was necessary while he was in the hospital. Craig believes we all make an impact greater than we realize and wants to honor owners and founders as they lead others. Craig Andrews is the founder and Principal Ally at allies4me. He’s been in the marketing space for more than two decades and has driven over a half-billion dollars of revenue. He’s spoken on dozens of podcast as well as conferences including Conversion Conference.

Your host, Craig Andrews, talks with the Founder and CEO of The Business Growers, Laura Johns. Laura's journey is as inspiring as it is impressive. She spent 18 years managing marketing efforts for tech startups and global multibillion-dollar businesses in the telecommunications industry. Her roots are in a small town in Mississippi, where her father was a judge. This upbringing instilled in her a strong sense of responsibility and a drive to succeed.

Laura's husband, Jay, is a significant figure in her story. They both hail from the same small town, and their families now live less than a mile apart. Laura humorously notes that marrying someone from her hometown means she knows all the dirt about him. But more importantly, she emphasizes the crucial role Jay's support has played in her journey as a business owner.

Laura is a firm believer in making decisions as a team, both in her marriage and in her work life. She recently sent out a survey to her team to gather feedback and suggestions for the upcoming year. While she acknowledges that it may be difficult to read some of the feedback, she values everyone's input and wants them to feel like they are part of the decision-making process.

Laura explained that she is not personally administering the survey, but her assistant is, to ensure anonymity and encourage genuine responses. She emphasizes the importance of trust and immediate feedback in her organization's culture, and how she values open communication with her team.

Your host, Craig Andrews, talks with the CEO of The Johnson Leadership Group, Kevin Johnson. Kevin's journey is an inspiring one. After graduating from college during a recession, he found it challenging to secure employment. However, following his mother's advice, he applied for a job in the federal government and was selected. This marked the beginning of his 34-year career in government, where he worked in various roles related to acquisition and contracting.

His responsibilities ranged from purchasing goods and services for his agency, from office supplies to major weapon systems. He enjoyed his role as it allowed him to be a property manager, negotiator, and even part attorney. After 25 years, Kevin transitioned to a different work role to gain more experience and perspective.

During our conversation, Kevin shared some valuable leadership lessons. He emphasized the importance of communication and understanding in leadership. Leaders, he believes, need to have conversations with their team members to determine the best fit for them and address any stagnation. By being good listeners, leaders demonstrate that they care about what their team members have to say.

Kevin also highlighted three fundamental needs that everyone has: affirmation, a sense of belonging, and inclusion. Leaders should appreciate and acknowledge their team members, make them feel part of a tribe or community, and ensure they feel included. These three needs are crucial for individuals' well-being and can contribute to their overall happiness and productivity.

Kevin's involvement in suicide prevention is another aspect of his work that he shared. He noticed an increasing feeling of isolation, loneliness, and depression among people, leading to thoughts of suicide. Kevin is passionate about raising awareness and educating others on this topic. Kevin was appointed as the faith community commissioner on the Commission for Suicide Prevention in Maryland, where he works to share information, manage state plans, and collaborate with faith community leaders.

Your host, Craig Andrews, talks with the Owner of Core Authenticity, Jeff Koziatek. Jeff is a man of many talents, as a coach, speaker, performer, podcast host, and author. Jeff's journey from a juggler to a coach is as fascinating as inspiring.

Jeff began juggling at the tender age of 11. It was a decision made by his mother, who chose a juggling workshop over a magic one for him. Despite his initial reluctance, Jeff stuck with it and honed his skills over time. Jeff's transition from entertainment to coaching was a significant shift in his career. He now uses his juggling skills to give back to the community by offering free presentations to kids in areas where he is hired for keynotes or coaching packages.

Jeff introduced the concepts of the challenger mindset and the champion mindset. The challenger mindset is focused on comparing, competing, contending, and controlling; the champion mindset, on the other hand, is about engaging, equipping, empowering, and encouraging. With the concept of intentionality and its connection to meaning and purpose in life, Jeff believes that many people feel lost and frustrated because they are searching for purpose and worth.

Your host, Craig Andrews, talks with the Co-Founder of Marketing Boost, Marco Torres. Marco's tale begins with a dream that many share: the pursuit of entrepreneurial success. By the age of 23, he was the proud owner of multiple restaurants and a nightclub. However, the 2008 recession was a turning point that brought unforeseen challenges. Marco faced the heart-wrenching decision to lay off employees and eventually lost his job, home, cars, and other possessions. The financial and emotional toll was immense, but it was his response to these hardships that defined his future.

One of the most profound lessons Marco shared was the importance of mindset. Initially, he found himself trapped in a victim mentality, blaming external circumstances for his downfall. But a pivotal shift in perspective was necessary for recovery. Marco emphasized that taking responsibility and adopting a proactive mindset were crucial in overcoming the obstacles he faced. It's a reminder that our mindset can either be our greatest ally or our most formidable enemy.

Another significant insight from Marco's experience is the value of having multiple sources of income. The vulnerability of relying on a single stream was made painfully clear during the recession. Marco's reinvention led him to the travel industry, where he leveraged partnerships and his skill set to create a new venture. This diversification not only provided stability but also paved the way for the birth of Marketing Boost.
