We're Back!
Layered Butter
11/21/21 • 78 min
Well, well, well...hello again!! The Layered Butter podcast is back (finally!!) and we’ve missed you all. No twiddling fingers on this podcast, we’ve been watching and waiting for the right time to get back on the airwaves and we are excited to bring back the popcorn! Rod and Raf are back and we are happy to announce a new cast member to join our little duo...which is now, a trio! A familiar face (or voice, I guess) nonetheless, Layered Butter contributor and family; @jsloggett! It won’t just be Rod going on long winded rants or crazy hot takes or Raf just forgetting what to say, we now have a third voice that’ll keep things fresh (and to hold Raf and Rod back from destroying each other). Maybe no more Brendan Fraser shoutouts? Or even moreso...Our first episode back features the trio jumping back to the old stompin’ grounds. Like nothing ever changed. Less serious and more casual than ever, we chat the implications of the tragedy on the set of “Rust”, Raf’s fascination for cults and so much more. That’s the way to do it, right? There’s never enough television and cinema out there, right? We’re back, extra layered.

Pack it up, folks. A24 has peaked. Daniels have peaked. Cinema has peaked. In this week's special episode of the Layered Butter Podcast - Rod, Raf and Jordan tackle Daniels' new multiverse drama, Everything Everywhere All At Once. Grandiose in its sprawling creative ambition and vision to its beating heartbeat of emotion and catharsis; the Layered Butter boys attempt to unpack whatever, whenever and everything (about this film) all at once. In its absolute insanity of a narrative - from ****** fingers to martial arts d***** to rata- (actually I'll just skip this entire spoiler section) to the return of Ke Huy Quan into the spotlight. Is there a method to this madness? Does insanity and chaos prove to be the perfect launching pad into creative nirvana? Is too much...ever too much? The Layered Butter trio wonder if the film has legs to net some Oscar gold - whether its Daniels, Michelle Yeoh (!!!!!!!!!) or A24, will this film earn a legacy deserving of its fortitude? Also - we dive into the shakeup of the headhonchos at Pixar and Disney, Miyazaki's most hated films of the West and the loss of another legacy comic. All this, everywhere, everything, all at once (in this episode of Layered Butter).

Hear ye, hear ye!
On this week's episode of the Layered Butter Podcast; Rod, Raf and Jordan have a special announcement to make - and it's gonna break some hearts and ears. Though, they're still chatting about the death of the high-brow movie, whatever is going on at DC Films and of course, Raf's favourite, the beginning of the award season madness. Is Everything Everywhere All At Once going to upset Fabelmans? Will Fraser get that gold? Is Ke the only lock for the win? We also dive into our Letterboxd's to find some deep cut reccos that really say something about us. At least, we hope.
All of this and more in this week's extra special episode of the Layered Butter Podcast.

Listen, we know what you’re thinking – after 30+ episodes of the Layered Butter Podcast; how do we keep it fresh like a new Tarantino, Spielberg or Aster? After all this time, Rod, Raf and Jordan just generally nerd out, whine or even cry about the general state of film, cinema and pop culture and honestly, we’re happy for the opportunity to just be a part of your podcasting world. In this weeks episode of the Layered Butter Podcast, our trio is joined by Podcast greatness, legends and hosts of the longest-running film podcast ever! Frank & Sean of the Film Junk Podcast. They’ve got over seventeen years (!!!) in the podcasting world honestly, we thought it would be pretty damn cool to talk about how we talk about movies. The Layered Butter Podcast was a pandemic baby (bruhhh) and it was just a great way to stick around and chat about something we all love to do – across different topics from love, unions, film festivals and even genre film...but how do we keep things interesting enough to keep ya’ll listening? Raf can only butcher only so many names on-air, Jordan can drop only so many obscure documentaries and Rod....well, he can keep dropping fire emoji hot takes because...yeah. Frank and Sean gives us a deep dive into the world of all things cinema talk – from the absolute strength of the Letterboxd rating system to the strive for authenticity in their on-air personas – I mean, are we all who we really are in a public sphere? Are we, as hosts, self-aware of the personalities we portray ourselves as across the airwaves? The LB Podcast has been running for almost a year and a half now – all done virtually – how does Film Junk adapt to the changes of how people listen to podcasts and how do those changes affect chemistry or even logistics? As much as we can nerd out as a bunch of friends talking about what we love – do we....ever get tired of each other? (of course not ) We learn from the Godfathers of the O.G. film podcast, Film Junk. In addition, Rod, Raf and Jordan chat about the absolute GEM of Nicole Kidman’s new AMC ad, the satire of Adam McKay’s Don’t Look Up and the possibility of Nolan’s first blockbuster....bomb? All of this and more in this weeks episode of the Layered Butter Podcast!

It's on, like Donkey Kong! In this week's super-special episode, Rod and Raf are joined by their closest pals and hosts of Your Podcast is in Another Castle podcast, Diego and Jordan, as they traverse the mythical and uncharted lands of the revered, Video Game Movie. Aside from the obvious questions (why?) studios and audiences seem to be drawn to the relentless mythos of the video game film - the adaptation of a story or world that deemed successful in the medium of gaming, but can it survive as a film? I mean, Tomb Raider spawned a franchise and what the heck even is the 10+ Resident Evil movies? (Good for Milla Jovovich!!!) There's camp, there's cheese, there's also the absolute garbage. Again, maybe it's us being video game fans and our protectiveness of that IP, but there's hope for a good adaptation in the future right? RIGHT?! Oh, Tom Cruise gets hit with another setback in his Mission Impossible and Vin & his familia is going to Cannes (really). Tune in!

*breathes heavily into podcast microphone* What's your favourite scary movie?
In this episode of the Layered Butter Podcast; Rod, Raf and Jordan are joined by Nicolina and Marie of the Para(normal) Podcast to dive deep into all things that go bump in the night (and movies). Right on the eve of Halloween, this episode unpacks the mysteries of human fear and what keeps the audiences and our hearts crawling back for more jump scares, gore and bone-chilling terror. How has the horror genre evolved over the years - from its creature features, to slasher films and now to the popularized A24 "elevated horror" - what are the barebones of "horror"? Also, Warner Bros Discovery seems to be shuffling their content for another batch of cancellations and Netflix says goodbye to one of its co-produced originals. All this and more in this weeks spooky episode of Layered Butter
