Steve Friedland is a founding member of the law school faculty who taught at the law schools of the University of Georgia, Miami, Nova Southeastern and Georgia State before coming to Elon Law. In addition to law teaching, Friedland has served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia and as an Assistant Director of the Office of Legal Education in the Department of Justice. He has won numerous teaching awards at several law schools over three decades and was named one of the best law teachers in America by the Harvard University Press book, What the Best Law Teachers Do. He is an internationally known speaker on legal education who has worked with the Japan Legal Foundation to develop law schools in Japan, and with Afghanistan law schools to improve the rule of law in that country pursuant to a USAID initiative.
He has lectured to thousands of students across the country preparing for the bar exam. Friedland holds a juris doctor degree with honors from Harvard Law School, as well as a master of law and doctor of the science of law degrees from Columbia University Law School, where he was a Dollard Fellow in Law, Medicine, and Psychiatry. Among the many things Professor Friedland has accomplished is that He was a 1st generation College and Law School Graduate from a small town in New York. Professor Katherine Reynolds graduated magna cum laude from Franklin College (IN) and received her J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law. She has been working in the area of refugee law since 2012. Additionally, She was a member of the inaugural class of the University of Virginia School of Law's Program in Law and Public Service (2009-2012). Prior to graduating law school, Katherine interned at El Centro Para la Accion Legal en Derechos Humanos in Guatemala City, working alongside indigenous rights activists fighting against hydroelectric projects, demanding an end to the impunity of corrupt state actors, and promoting intercultural bilingual education. Also, Professor Reynolds served as a volunteer in the US Peace Corps in Kazakhstan (2006-2008) and Americorps in Franklin, Indiana (2006).
Professor Reynolds was a supervising attorney at a refugee legal aid agency in Cairo, Egypt for three years, serving as the Director in her final year. She managed an international staff of interpreters, attorneys, and volunteer legal advocates who provided assistance in obtaining UNHCR protection, refugee status, and resettlement for refugees and asylum-seekers from Sudan, Somalia, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Iraq, and Syria. Katherine also provided legal representation to Iraqis seeking admission to the US through the DAP and SIV programs. She currently serves as the director of the Humanitarian Immigration Law Clinic.
