Kosher Money

Kosher Money

Living Lchaim

Living the life of an Orthodox Jew in the 21st Century often necessitates a very significant income. Unfortunately, many are struggling to keep up.

The Problem Is Bigger Than We Realize

The cost of life for an Orthodox family with children can range from $150,000 to $350,000 or more, depending on city and schools of choice, lifestyle choices and number of children.

The median income in America is $68,000 per family.

This means that a family would potentially need to be in the top 5% of all income earners in the United States simply to get by!

The Solution

Solving this challenge begins with an open dialogue to create awareness and education and allowing for impactful feedback and interaction.

Kosher Money aims to be a pivotal piece in creating this much-needed conversation.

Eli Langer was the former CNBC Social Media Producer and is currently the CEO of Harvesting Media. Each week, Eli sits down with experts to discuss various topics.

This is an original podcast by Living Lchaim and its partnered-sponsor is Living Smarter Jewish.

Can you imagine being a top ten executive in a Fortune 20 company at the ripe old age of 35?! That's exactly what Laizer Kornwasser did and he visited the Kosher Money studio to share some of the secrets behind his success.

He's successfully managed organizations ranging from 500 to 5,000 employees and has played a key role as President, COO and SVP in the growth of various uber-successful companies and orchestrated the successful sale of two separate $1,000,000,000 (that's a BILLION) transactions.

Lots of success, right?

6.6 million Americans struggle with gambling addiction, and a growing number are betting on sports.

What happened?

The floodgates opened in 2018 when the Supreme Court cut down a 1992 federal law that limited sports betting primarily to Nevada.

Now, gambling is in the office, it's in our cars, it's in our homes, it's in our bedrooms.

Does this have to be the unfortunate next addiction? How prevalent is it? What traps should we be aware of?

Visiting the studio was a dynamic duo.

First up: Rabbi Joey Haber, an insightful, energetic Rabbi who inspires and teaches thousands within his Brooklyn and Deal communities and across the web and world on TorahAnytime. We also spoke with Dovid Kohn, a therapist with a specialty in addiction and helps people and their families deal with those challenges, including gambling behaviors, compulsive spending, overgiving - yes that's a thing - and more.

Picture this: you’ve been a Rabbi at a Long Island synagogue for over 37 years and it’s time to retire. You don’t have much money to retire on - just $50,000, but it’s enough.

You’ve never really invested money before, though in a relatively short amount of time, you turn that $50,000 into...$7 million.

What would you do with the cash? How would your life change?

What if you then lost it all in a flash? Which emotions would you feel on this financial roller-coaster? Would you come out of it in one piece? Would you come out of it a better person?

Join Rabbi Benjamin Blech for the ride of your life in our newest Kosher Money episode.

The cost of an Orthodox Jewish living isn't low.

But do we make the challenge harder on ourselves?

Put another way, if I come to the Rabbi and say "Good news! I just received a 5% raise and I'm now making $175,000! I've made it! Finally, time to breathe."

How would he respond?

We went through that and more with Rabbi Eliezer Gewirtzman who eloquently shared his research, insights and guidance to everyone looking to live within their means (and a happier life as a result).

Meet one of the smartest Jews in the world.

Rabbi Yitzchak Breitowitz is a distinguished figure known for his contributions in both Jewish scholarship and law.

He was born in April 1954 in New York to Holocaust survivor parents. He also holds a B.S. with honors from Johns Hopkins University, a J.D. from Harvard Law School, and a Doctorate in Talmudic Law from Ner Israel.

Professionally, Rabbi Breitowitz has served as the Rav of the Silver Spring Woodside Shule in Silver Spring, Maryland, and was a tenured professor at the University of Maryland School of Law, specializing in contracts, bankruptcy, commercial law, and bioethics.

Currently, he is a world-renowned lecturer and rabbinic authority, serving as the Rav of Kehillas Ohr Somayach in Jerusalem and a Senior Lecturer in Yeshivas Ohr Somayach in Jerusalem.
