Modern cults are more sophisticated, more insidious, and further reaching than ever before. And, to be frank, it's scarier and weirder than I could have ever imagined. In 1982, it was estimated there were between 300,000 and 3 million people in a cult. In 2017, Herbalife alone had 4.7 million members around the world. 😟What's the deal with this explosion of modern cults???
We used to think about cults as being a religion and a charismatic leader- but that's not enough anymore. I believe that cults are akin to being in a large scale abusive relationship. If we want to understand why so many of us are getting into toxic relationships with groups, we need to adopt a new model.
In this episode, I explore the reasons for why there are so many new cults, why they're so successful, their parallels to toxic relationships and a new, better way of thinking about the toxic perils and practical application of mind control.
