Denke was a failed farmer who turned to cannibalism and sold meat, possibly human, at his shop. He was also a cross-bearer and organist at a local Lutheran church. Denke's crimes were discovered after he attempted to kill a drifter who escaped and alerted the police. He was arrested but hanged himself in his holding cell. The police found evidence of his murders and cannibalism in his home.
