Keep the Faith with Shammai Engelmayer - Episode No. 85--Bad speech and its threat to our democracy
play

02/18/22 • 25 min

The level of political discourse here has sunk so low that it poses a threat to American democracy. A member of Congress cheers a former president for saying data collectors should be executed. Another member urges people to send their friends and family members into "liberal frenzies" when they talk about injustice. A senator wants truckers to block our roads even if it will result in higher inflation and emptier shelves. Another senator thinks people who cause violence on planes should nevertheless be allowed to fly on those planes. Judaism, of course, has much to say about such political discourse, including that some who use it "should be thrown to the dogs."

Keep the Faith with Shammai Engelmayer - Episode No. 63—Environmental catastrophes and Judaism's mandate
play

Global warming—climate change—is very real, and the early Atlantic and Pacific storm seasons we're having, the massive early and intense wildfires we're seeing, the extreme weather patterns we're experiencing, etc., all are the result. Judaism, based on clack-letter Torah law, has much to say about what we need to do to save our planet.

play

07/16/21 • 32 min

Wildfires, tropical storms, climbing COVID rates, an apartment building collapse—things happen that shouldn't have happened, that could have been preventedm but all Congress does, to borrow from what John Adams said in the musical 1776, is “piddle, twiddle, and resolve. not one damn thing do [they] solve; piddle, twiddle, and resolve. nothing's ever solved ."

Keep the Faith with Shammai Engelmayer - Episode # 111: Israel's elections and the concerns they raise for Diaspora Jews
play

11/18/22 • 18 min

I'm joined this week by our man in Israel, Charles Byblezer, for a very insightful discussion about the goings-on in Israel. A week before the U.S. midterms, Israel held its fifth election is less than four years--and the results are causing hand-wringing and hair-pulling among Jewish leaders here in the U.S. and elsewhere in the Diaspora. The government Prime Minister-designate Benjamin Netanyahu is most likely to form will lean to the far right politically and, just as important, religiously. There even may an attempt to turn Israel into a theocracy, if the No. 2 party in the expected coalition government gets its way.
