Nearly two weeks after speculation that Kansas City Police Chief Rick Smith was being forced out, the board that oversees the department announced that Smith would stay in charge through spring 2022. KCUR Reporter Peggy Lowe fills us in on the back-and-forth over Smith's future and what's known about the video of the Smith calling the victim of a police shooting "the bad guy."

The first confirmed case of the omicron variant in Missouri was discovered Friday, just days after the first known U.S. case was detected the California. Side Effects Public Media’s Sebastián Martínez Valdivia reports, some tracking the variant are hopeful they’ll quickly get up to speed.

State and federal investigators say it took years to put together the case against Wandale J. Fulton. Now the alleged crime ring leader will plead guilty in a Kansas City federal court on charges of identity theft, auto-title fraud and arson for profit. KCUR's Lisa Rodriguez speaks to morning host Sam Zeff, who broke this story.

As a new surge in the pandemic disrupts life, people between the ages of 18 and 29 are weary of virtual school, lost jobs and isolation. KCUR’s Laura Ziegler took a weekend walk around midtown Kansas City and found that 20-somethings are paying attention to the science while trying to go on about their lives.

Kansas City Southern is moving toward a merger with Canadian Pacific. Shareholders for both railroad companies overwhelmingly approved the $31 billion deal last week. KCUR’s Frank Morris reports that if regulators go along, the merger would make history, and reshape the railroad industry for decades to come.

The Veterans Reader's Theater project in Kansas City is helping former service members process their feelings about war by writing poetry and prose about their military experience and present it to the public. Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt has made it clear he’s against mask mandates and other COVID-19 prevention measures. Now, Schmitt and Missouri Treasurer Scott Fitzpatrick are making legal and financial threats against schools that keep up their COVID efforts. Kansas City Today - Uncertainty at the Leavenworth prison

The Leavenworth Detention Center in Kansas has been the center of a number of controversies ranging from reports of poor conditions to authorities eavesdropping on phone calls between prisoners and their attorneys. But the federal government's contract with operator CoreCivic will expire soon, following an executive order by President Biden to end relationships with private prisons. Steve Vockrodt, investigative editor of NPR’s Midwest Newsroom, looked into the troubled Leavenworth facility and the future of private prisons.

A holiday tradition for many families is back this year at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts. After a pandemic year off, Kansas City Ballet’s "The Nutcracker" returns — but with some noticeable changes, as KCUR’s Laura Spencer reports.

Kansas City Today - Mask mandates get even more confusing

St. Louis County and Jackson County filed a motion to intervene in a Cole County case in which some residents and business owners sued the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, challenging its ability to issue mask orders. After a judge struck down those orders as unconstitutional, Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt opted not to appeal.

Since then, Schmitt has used the decision to threaten school districts around the state with lawsuits — what St. Louis and Jackson Counties call "a campaign of litigation terror." St. Louis Public Radio's Sarah Kellogg has this primer on where Missouri is now.

How should Kansas schools teach history and race? They’re getting plenty of advice, most of it conflicting and often angry. As Suzanne Perez of the Kansas News Service reports, what started as anger over critical race theory has evolved into attacks on public schools.
