Just Theory

In this episode, we are speaking with Professor Linda Zerilli, the Charles E. Merriam Distinguished Service Professor of Political Science at Chicago University, where she writes on subjects ranging from feminist thought to the politics of language, democratic theory, and Continental philosophy.
We discuss her reflections on Volume I of Hannah Arendt’s The Life of the Mind as well as the interplay between thinking, knowing and judging. We ask why opinions matter, wonder about the role of individuals in assessing the legal system and learn from feminist historiography.
Massive thanks to Professor Zerilli for her time and engagement: we look forward to seeing the published papers!

On the History of Law and Order - Professor Fernanda Pirie (Oxford)

In this episode, we discuss the distinct concept of the rule of laws, the relationship between law, certainty and power, and how the expansion of legal frameworks can be far from the linear evolution that we expect.
Fernanda Pirie is a Professor of the Anthropology of Law at Oxford University's Centre for Socio-Legal Studies, where she publishes on legal anthropology and Tibetan legal history, as well as related issues, such as comparison in law and anthropology and the relationship between empirical studies and legal theory.
Massive thanks to Professor Pirie for her time and engagement - we loved the discussion and her new book, 'The Rule of Laws: a 4,000-year quest to order the world' (Profile Books, 2021), which you can find here: https://profilebooks.com/work/the-rule-of-laws/

On the Legal Ways of Thinking - Professor Alison Young (Cambridge)

In this episode, we speak with Alison Young, Sir David Williams Professor of Public Law at Cambridge University, and a Fellow of Robinson College. Professor Young's main interest is in constitutional theory, particularly dialogue theory, where she draws comparisons between different means of protecting human rights.
We discuss the importance of popular legal education as well as Professor Young’s current research project in legal methodology. We talk about the model-theoretic approach in constitutional law and the need for constant readiness to revise our own assumptions.
We are grateful to Professor Young for her time and engagement, and we hugely support her work leading the Constitutional Law Matters initiative: https://constitutionallawmatters.org
