Are you shoving facts and figures down your listener’s throat? Are you blathering on about yourself and failing to make a connection?

Stories to the rescue!

In my last episode I explained why stories are such a powerful way to connect with your listener on a deeper level and worm your way into their memories. If you haven’t heard it yet, *spoiler: science.

Getting yourself and your podcast embedded in your listener’s memory will help with recall and make you seem more like an authority on the subject. These are good things.

So, how do you use storytelling effectively in your podcast? There are probably a million ways. But, I promise you a 5-minute podcast so I’ve boiled it down to 4 key styles of storytelling that I have seen work really well in podcasting.

Here they are - 4 Storytelling Styles for Podcasting:

1. Simple and Short Success Stories

These stories are used as examples to make your point.

2. Belief Busting Stories

These personal accounts or stories from history that are used to disprove a belief that your listener might be holding on to. These are especially powerful in breaking through limiting beliefs.

3. Core Story

This is the feature story - the story upon which your whole episode is based. You’re going to want to make sure there is a lot in it for the listener if you’re going to spend all of your time on one story - think take-aways and revelations!

4. Analogy

Use a story people may or may not know (either from history or your experience) that seems to be unrelated to the topic but is ripe with symbolism. These can really trigger that creativity center and make your podcast really memorable.

Whichever style you use, make sure you bring it back to the reason people tune into your show. Unless your show is literally ‘Storytime for Podcast Listeners’, you can’t just tell stories. You have to make them relevant to the WHY behind your show.

Not sure what that WHY is... I can help with that. Book a free 15-minute coaching call with me and we’ll work it out.

And then, sometime in the future you can have a success story of your own that starts with ‘Once upon a time, I called up this podcast coach...’

Just One Tip from Your Podcast Performance Coach - 149 The Simple Technique that Will 10x the Authority of Your Podcaster Voice
play

01/25/22 • 8 min

As a podcaster, you want your voice to convey certain things. You want you listeners to instantly feel like they can trust you because you know what you are talking about. You want them to be listening and nodding in agreement.

This doesn’t just come from the content you’re sharing. Your voice has to live up to the authority your content is driving.

But what do you do if you have a weak voice or a quiet delivery?

Don’t worry! We can fix it.

Have you ever heard the term “air of authority”? It usually refers to someone who just oozes with authority. That sounds like a good thing, right? Something that your podcast could benefit from if the host had the ‘air of authority.’

Well, here’s the secret to getting that air of authority... get more air. As in, learn how to breathe properly as you deliver your content.

I hear it all the time. Podcasters who are running out of air as they try desperately to finish their thought. Sometimes it’s so bad that the last word of the sentence is completely ghosted because they just don’t have any air left.

And guess what that equals... the opposite of authority (which, by the way, I looked up and is ‘impotence’, just saying).

So, you don’t want that in your podcast especially if your podcast is a marketing tool for your business or if your podcast is supposed to build you up as an expert in your field.

If this happens to you, it’s not your fault. You’re just bad at breathing.

Most people are. Most people have never been taught how to breathe properly when they are presenting information.

Get Big Air Behind the Mic

Lucky for you, you’ve got me as your podcast coach! In this episode, I’m going to walk you through a simple exercise that will show you exactly how to get more air behind your presentation.

This one little trick will instantly strengthen your voice and give you more authority in your presentation of the information. Yep, all of that from a little extra air.

Of course, if your content stinks, no amount of hot air is going to fix that. Better let me get a good look at it and see what we can do to make sure your podcast content lives up to this big booming voice I just helped you discover... Book your free, 15-minute coaching call with me. Don’t take another breath... book it now.

Just One Tip from Your Podcast Performance Coach - 209 How to Improve Your Podcast Interview Skills with 'Expander Questions'
play

05/14/24 • 4 min

Struggling to get insightful answers from your guests?

This episode's all about going beyond surface-level interviews and crafting conversations that captivate listeners.

We all know the feeling: you book a fantastic guest, but when the mics roll, they clam up. ‍ One-word answers make for a snoozefest, and you're left scrambling to salvage the episode.

Enter expander questions! These gems are your secret weapon to crack open even the toughest nuts.

Expander questions aren't about padding the episode. They're about creating a 3D listening experience. Think vivid details, emotional connection, and real-world application. That's how you grab listeners and keep them hooked!

Here's your emergency interview kit: (Bookmark these!)

  1. Clarify: "Tell me more about that" or "Can you elaborate?"
  2. Feelings: "How did that make you feel?" or "What emotions came up?"
  3. Details: "Walk us through the process" or "What specific steps did you take?"
  4. Connect: "How does this relate to your overall experience?" or "Have you faced similar situations?"
  5. Apply it: "What can listeners learn from this?" or "How can they use your advice?"
  6. Quirky: "What childhood experience prepared you for this?" (Fun twist!)

Remember, the key is to listen actively and be genuinely curious. Let go of your script and follow the conversation where it leads. Trust me, it's way more fun that way!

Just One Tip from Your Podcast Performance Coach - 073 How to Kill a Bad Podcast Interview

073 How to Kill a Bad Podcast Interview

Just One Tip from Your Podcast Performance Coach

02/19/19 • 6 min

It happens to the best of us. Even the pros have bad interviews. Or, rather bad guests. So, what do you do when your podcast guest is crappy, drunk, an ass, incoherent or just pointless? You kill the interview.

In this episode of Just the Tip, I walk you through the steps of killing a bad interview. Yes, there is a right and a wrong way to do this.

So, what constitutes a bad guest? It’s simple - the content they deliver doesn’t serve your audience and/or it doesn’t help you deliver on your promise to your listener.

There are ways to avoid getting into this situation, ahem, episode 67. And, there are ways to solve it on the spot, cough-cough, episode 63. But, if you do all of these things and you still wind up with an episode that just needs to be encased in cement and dropped off a long pier - this episode is your guide.

I’ve seen a lot of people in forums and groups discuss this scenario. And, frankly, that’s what inspired this episode. Mostly because I saw some pretty bad advice in those forums.

It happens from time to time in radio, when we’re lucky enough to have pre-recorded the interview. And let me tell you, a good radio producer will not hesitate to kill a bad interview. And, they don’t feel guilty about it either. It’s all about having the right mindset and commitment to your listeners.

It’s these producer tips that I’m sharing in this episode. Every podcaster experiences a bad guest. Be armed with the right way to get rid of them (and sooner rather than later) so that you never have to freak out about what to do (and go to get advice from some online forum that will only lead to you getting a crap reputation).

By the way, there’s even a way to kill a bad interview AND turn the whole thing into an opportunity. If you want that tip, sign up for my Tipsletter right now... it’ll be in my next newsletter!

Or, tap directly into this kind of ridiculous genius by booking a free 15-min call with me.

Just One Tip from Your Podcast Performance Coach - 072 My Top Tips for Podcasters Recording on the Road

072 My Top Tips for Podcasters Recording on the Road

Just One Tip from Your Podcast Performance Coach

play

02/05/19 • 7 min

So, you’re hitting the road and you want to take your podcast with you. Well, you’re in luck because I love to travel and I know exactly what you should and shouldn’t do to record decent audio on the go.

A lot of podcasters need to record audio on the road. And my tip is DON’T. Seriously, if you don’t need to, as in, if with just a little bit of planning and organization you could record before you go on vacation then do that. Seriously, if you’re just going on vacation for a week don’t bring your podcast along. You’re only going to annoy your family, turn off your listeners by irrelevantly bragging about where you are (instead of enjoying it) and, take it from me... getting sand out of a windsock is a real bitch.

If, on the other hand, you are often on the road, you’re a digital nomad, or your podcast is about being on the road - then let’s get down to some tips on how to get a consistent sound wherever you and your mic find yourselves.

Your Listener Should Not be Able to Hear that You’re on the Road.

In this episode, I weigh out the options I considered about how much gear to bring (ranging from nothing to my entire studio). I also test out a few mic options (you’ll never believe what won out!) and share live sound tests so you can hear the difference a room can make.

I’ll even share my favourite, act like you’re 4 years old’ trick, that will vastly improve your recording. Plus, it’s so much fun!

So, if you’re location-independent, a travel podcaster, or just too damned busy to pre-record enough shows to cover off your vacation - this episode is for you. Time for the mobile podcast.

Speaking of being too busy, why not off-load something... like say editing. Did you know that I edit podcasts? Yes, even from the road. If you want to find out how you can ship your podcast editing off to me, visit my website or sign up for a free 15-minute call and we can chat about it.

What if you showed up for a dinner party only to watch the host scramble to figure out what to make for dinner? Would that make you feel comfortable? Like a wanted guest? Or would it make you feel like they cared so little about you that they couldn’t be bothered to put something in the oven before you got there?

Unless your host is your dimwit cousin, the answer is probably the latter. You would not be impressed. Things would be awkward. And, dare I say, you’d think twice about accepting an invitation from this half-assed party host again.

This scenario is playing out in podcasts ALL. THE. TIME.

Frankly, I’m shocked at how many times I’ve heard one co-host say to the other co-host, ‘So, what are we talking about today?’

What?!

You were so pressed for time that you couldn’t have this conversation BEFORE you hit record?

Here’s the message I’m getting loud and clear: You don’t have time to prepare because you don’t care about your show or your listeners.

There. I said it.

Now, you may just be lazy.

You may think that this approach keeps it ‘real and authentic.’ (I didn’t subscribe to ‘the making of your podcast’ btw)

Or, you may just think that your time is more important than my time (you know, those few minutes when I have to listen to you figure out your show before you get around to serving me, your LISTENER!)

Whatever your reasoning, the result is the same. The listener is being disrespected.

Is that what you were going for when you started your podcast to grow your authority and convert with greater ease?

I know, I know. I’m on a bit of a rant and being a hard-ass.

But the truth is, I want you to see how not taking 3 minutes BEFORE you hit record to figure out your plan is really sending the wrong message.

You want your listeners to feel taken care of. You want them to feel like you’re doing this for THEM and that they are the most important thing to you. You want them to see you as an authority and thought leader. That’s how your podcast can serve you, your business, and your listener all at the same time.

So, do the right thing and prepare. Off air. Because preparing is caring.

Now, if you need some help getting your poop in a group, I’m happy to help you out. You can book your free 15-minute coaching call with me by clicking here. We’ll talk about your podcast and make sure it’s serving your ideal listener, your business, and you.

205 Podcast Script Tips: How to Improve Your Delivery and Performance

Just One Tip from Your Podcast Performance Coach

play

03/19/24 • 6 min

Great scripts can flop or flourish - the difference is in the delivery.

And, the secret to a well-delivered script is what you're looking at when you read. In this episode, I'm sharing my top tips for marking up your script to get you the best, most engaging performance possible.

This is the art of script delivery and it's a game-changer for any podcaster. Learn how to transform your scripts from dull to dynamic with insider secrets I've gleaned from over 30 years in broadcasting.

Whether you're scripting top to tail or just framing your episodes with my Oreo Cookie method (check out episode 10 for more), I'll show you how to deliver like a seasoned pro.

First up, let's write like we speak.

Forget fancy writing – we're all about authenticity here! Embrace contractions, dropped g's, and misspellings to capture your natural voice.

Now, let's talk punctuation.

It's not just for grammar nerds – it's your secret weapon for a killer performance. Add extra commas, slashes, and exclamation points to guide your delivery and keep your audience hooked. Anything that catches your eye and reminds you to... take... your... time!

Say goodbye to chunky paragraphs and hello to readability!

Break up your script into bite-sized chunks to make it easier to digest and deliver. Write out numbers and punctuations to avoid tripping up during your delivery. For example, my script don't have 'visit podcastperformancecoach.com' – it's 'visit podcast performance coach dot com'. Keep it smooth, keep it flowing!

Grab a pen and mark up your script like a pro!

Underline important words, add exclamation points, arrows – whatever helps you deliver your message with passion and conviction. Can't print your script? No problem! Use digital tools like bolding, italics, and emojis to mark up your script and enhance your delivery.

And here's a little trick I learned early on – restart and repeat!

After recording your full script, swing right back to the beginning and restart your read without stopping (like in episode 133). It's a surefire way to warm up and get into your flow for a flawless performance that sounds just as good out of the gate as it does on the CTA at the end.

Just One Tip from Your Podcast Performance Coach - 190 Should You Start A Podcast for Your Personal Brand

190 Should You Start A Podcast for Your Personal Brand

Just One Tip from Your Podcast Performance Coach

play

08/22/23 • 6 min

If you've got a personal brand, having a podcast is like adding rocket fuel to your brand's growth. But hold on, even if you're rocking a podcast already, there's gold in this episode for you too. Freelancers and service-based businesses, you're not left out – dive in, because I'm about to reveal the ultimate ways a podcast can transform your brand's destiny.

First things first, let's set the stage. When I say "personal brand," I'm talking about that business driven by the magnetic force of one person – that's you! Your expertise, your flair, your values – they're the foundation of your business.

Let's break it down. A solid personal brand means:

1. Being Remarkable: You're known for something that sets you apart.

2. Radiating Personality: Your charm resonates and sticks.

3. Staying On-Point: Your message is consistent across the board.

4. Putting Skills on Display: You're the go-to authority in your niche.

5. Building Bonds: You're cultivating loyal relationships with your ideal customers.

Podcasting? Oh, it's the ace up your sleeve that nails all these goals and more.

Why Podcasting is Your Brand's Bestie

1. Master of Expertise and Authority: Your podcast is your megaphone for expertise. It's where you shine, flaunting your knowledge and cementing your authority.

2. Unleash Consistency and Authenticity: Your podcast is your arena. It's where you show up, be yourself, and passionately tackle topics you love. Your audience connects with your authenticity.

3. Forge Personal Connections: Podcasting is intimate. Listeners tune in, often one-on-one. Your passion ignites a connection, and familiarity breeds liking, trust, and loyalty. That? It's a goldmine for leads and sales.

4. Harmony with Your Brand: But here's the kicker – your podcast has to jive with your brand's core. If it's not echoing your expertise, authority, or true personality, it won't propel your brand – it might even hold it back.

Podcasting is a Marathon, Not a Sprint.

You're in it for the long game. Podcasting is no quick win; it's about building relationships and enduring connections. That's why consistency is key.

Existing Podcasters, This One's for You Too

If you're already podcasting with a personal brand, don't rest on your laurels. Take a deep dive into your podcast's impact. Is it driving your brand? Or is it lagging behind?

Remember, podcasting is just one gear in the marketing machine. The veterans still in the game? They're here because they stuck with it and it's working.

Ready to Supercharge Your Brand with Podcasting?

If the podcasting bug has bitten, and you're ready to kickstart your brand's journey or refine your current show, I'm here to help. Book a free 15-minute coaching call with me.

We'll dig into your podcast dreams and goals. We'll strategize on making your podcast a driving force in your business journey. And trust me, the Tim you hear on this podcast? That's the Tim you'll chat with – guaranteed.

Podcasting isn't just about episodes; it's about transforming your brand's destiny. Transform your podcast from 'meh' to 'mind-blowing' with the power of storytelling!

Dive into the magic of classic storytelling in this episode and discover how to captivate your audience, build connections, and make your podcast unforgettable.

In a world saturated with podcasts, standing out is crucial. It's not just about information; it's about the connection you forge with your audience. Stories are the key to achieving that connection and leaving a lasting impression.

In episode 107, I shared the science behind storytelling, exploring its ability to deepen connections and enhance memorability. Take a journey into the back library and give it a listen to uncover the secrets.

Episode 108 further enriches your storytelling arsenal by exploring different types of stories you can incorporate into your podcast. Dust off that episode and unearth valuable insights.

Now, let's unleash the power of classic storytelling. No more monotone facts; we want your audience on the edge of their seats, eagerly anticipating your every syllable.

Here are the essential parts of a compelling story:

1. **Set the Stage:**

Describe the setting, transporting your listener to the heart of the story. Create an atmosphere that hooks them instantly.

2. **Create a Connection with the Characters:**

Make your audience care about the main characters, including yourself. Foster a connection by revealing shared traits and experiences.

3. **Build Tension with Conflict:**

Every great story needs tension. What conflict drives the narrative? Why is the character embarking on a journey?

4. **Climax:**

Take your listeners to the crux of the story. Describe the turning point, the climax, and the aha moment where resolution begins to unfold.

5. **Bring it Home, Baby!:**

Conclude your story with a resolution. Whether it's a happy ending or a lesson learned, reveal the reason behind the story and connect it to your podcast, business, or offer.

Bonus Tip: Infuse emotion and energy throughout your story. Pizzazz is the secret sauce to making your storytelling truly come alive. Play with pacing, leverage the power of the pause, and add drama through volume adjustments or changes in proximity to the mic.

Remember, your storytelling style is as crucial as the story's components. Develop your unique style, surprise your listeners, and make your stories truly memorable.
