When I first got into the endurance world I was mainly focused on the training aspect but as I’ve learned and grown over the years, I’ve discovered that there is way more to it than that. Nutrition, rest, strength and sleep all play a major role in how we improve as athletes. If you're interested in taking the next step, ask yourself which of these other aspects do you know little to nothing about and take some time to learn more, you might be surprised how much of an impact it can have on how you perform.

On this episode of Just In Stride I broke down the success of Elite Swiss Marathoner and coach, Moritz Keinath.

Moritz played hockey and football growing up but actually didn’t enjoy running at all. It was only after a knee injury that he decided to give running another shot so he could get movement back in his life.

Today running has become much more for Moritz. It was a way to connect with his parents who were also passionate about the sport, a way for him to push his own limits and it also brought him closer to his local running community. He’s made huge strides in the marathon, now running at a semi professional level and hopes to better his time at the Berlin marathon later this year.

Part of what makes this show a success is your involvement, dedication and recommendations. When you like something about the show you let me know but when you have suggestions you let me know too and for that I’m grateful. It helps me learn, develop and grow as a creator that I hope will translate into an even better listening experience.
On this episode of Just In Stride I had an uplifting conversation with Olympic hurdler, Silver Medalist and Keynote Speaker, Sarah Wells.

She wasn’t a natural athlete in high school by any means but her track coach saw potential in her that she didn’t see in herself and was he ever right.

Sarah harnessed that talent and became one of the best 400m hurdlers in Canada, ultimately landing her on the 2012 Olympic team in London. That achievement certainly didn’t come without its challenges and adversity along the way. She shares the power of belief in oneself and how to pursue excellence in our own race, in what was an incredibly inspiring conversation.

When I first started running 14 years ago and signed up for races, I fell into the trap of wanting to jump into the next distance too quickly. A 10K turned into a half marathon which then led me to a marathon shortly after. I didn’t know much about the sport back then but if I had to go back I would stick with one distance for a while longer until I was comfortable to move up. Recently I’ve been racing some shorter stuff and I have to say I’m loving it. Preparing with less mileage, running fast, racing strategically and recovering quicker too. So if your goal is a marathon or ultra this year, find a fast 5 or 10K to get you out of your comfort zone, you might surprise yourself.

On this episode of Just In Stride I hit the trails with Elite sub-ultra marathoner, Remi Leroux.

In his youth he loved playing tennis and excelled at it. Despite his success he decided to give it up due to the lack of resources he felt he needed to remain competitive.

In fact, that’s what drew him to running so much. The idea that he could run anytime, anywhere, without training partners and really be in control of his results, made distance running very attractive. Remi progressed quite rapidly, signing up for a 5K and quickly jumped up to longer distances, leading him to the Ultra trails.
After years of ultra marathons, he realized he’d much rather race fast and challenge himself on the shorter mountain tracks. That transition has led him to some impressive results, racing 30 times in the last 2 seasons and finishing on 9 podiums in 2023 alone. Proof that running the distances you’re passionate and training for specific goals could be the key to your own success.

One of the things I truly believe in is if you’re passionate about something and you truly love doing it, then you’ll 100% be successful at it. It’s how people make a living doing what they love but nobody said it was easy, you need to put in the work and stay consistent. It takes trying, learning, succeeding and failing to truly make it work, making it all the more rewarding when it goes right. Set a goal but more importantly, draw out a plan to get where you want to go because the only person that can get you there is you.

On this episode of Just In Stride I had a really fun chat with pro ultra trail runner, Emily Hawgood.

Emily grew up on a farm in Zimbabwe and played all sorts of different sports as a kid. She later took a liking to long distance triathlon but with some encouragement from her now coach, turned to running on the trails and she never looked back.

Ultra running became her passion and she now does it professionally. Her results over the years have been impressive and so consistent from race to race, no matter the distance. It’s so clear she loves to run and that passion shines through every time she toes the line. I wouldn’t be surprised to see her finish on the podium at Western States later this year.

As the end of 2023 approaches, it’s fun to look back and see everything we’ve been through. The wins, the loses, the challenges, the triumphs, the hardship and the moments of joy. Personally, as much as I use this time to reflect on the past, I also love to learn from those experiences and see how I can improve moving forward.

On this episode of Just In Stride we uncover some valuable tools with Olympic lifter, runner and mental skills coach, Cam Charbonneau.
She’s been a high performance athlete her entire life. Whether it’s rugby, lifting, martial arts or running, Cam always strives to train and perform at the highest level.
As a professional mental skills coach, she gets to share her own experience with others and help athletes navigate their own mental struggles, allowing them to achieve optimal performance. We covered a wide range of topics from self talk, to confidence, planning, goal setting and recovery too, all of which can be applied in many aspects of life, not only sports.

I love thinking about the idea that just because your life has been a certain way until this point, doesn’t mean you can’t change your own trajectory. Who you were 10, 5 or even last year is not the same person you are today. We live, we learn and we grow. Take the time to acknowledge the challenges and accomplishments in your life, and celebrate how far you’ve gotten.
On this episode of Just In Stride I had a pleasant chat with Elite Ultra Trail Runner and Nutrition Coach, Jazmine Lowther.
She had an active and competitive childhood but fell out of sports and into other interests that put her future in danger. Fortunately for her, she realized her own potential before it was too late.

Today her focus is much different, becoming a pro ultra trail runner and going all in. Her breakout year was in 2022, winning the 100K as the underdog at Canyons, earning a Golden Ticket to Western States and finishing 4th in the CCC at UTMB in Chamonix. Unfortunately after that, injuries got in her way of realizing some of those dreams but she’s shown resilience, battled back and is ready to compete this upcoming season.

My comfort zone as an interviewer has been speaking to guests who share my passion, which is running. The goal for this show however is to speak with all athletes in endurance sports and try to see if there’s some common ground between them.

On today’s episode of Just In Stride I got in the water with former swimmer, master scuba dive trainer and now competitive indoor freediver, Natascha Leisi.

Whether it was swimming in the lake near her childhood home or jumping in the pool, she’s always gravitated towards the water.

That passion evolved and has taken her far beneath the surface into the depths of the Sea. Now freediving has given her the fire to compete for her country at the national level, while continuing to learn and grow in her sport. What does it mean to get outside of your comfort zone? It could be starting a new job, trying a new sport, meeting new people or maybe it’s going on an adventure filled with unknowns. Whatever it is, if we decide to go there, we will come away with some valuable lessons and likely learn something about ourselves.
Today on Just In Stride we’ll enter the mind of a great Canadian explorer, adventurer and ultra runner, Ray Zahab.
You might know Ray from his book and documentary Running The Sahara but his list of accomplishments goes far beyond that. He’s conquered deserts in blistering heat and the arctic in sub zero temperatures, conditions many of us will never get a chance to experience. But through his foundation Impossible2Possible, he’s able to share his love for expeditions and adventure with a youth ambassador team, teaching them resilience, perseverance and dedication.

As we move through life, we go through many different phases and priorities certainly change. Over time we grow and our appreciation for what’s important in life takes on different forms. That goes for family, friendships, careers and certainly our athletic goals too.

On this episode of Just In Stride we get to know Elite distance triathlete and top age grouper, Melanie Henderson.
Melanie started out as a track and field kid in her youth, always having fun with a healthy dose of competitiveness. She then moved from South Africa to the U.S in order to pursue a career as a pilot and that’s where a triathlete was born.

She proved to be a natural in her very first Ironman 70.3, placing 3rd in her age group and earning a stop at the World Championships. From that moment on, she was hooked.

We unpack her early success in the sport, the lessons she’s learnt along the way, the sense of community she feels and the pilot athlete balance she’s trying to find, so she’ll be able to fly in all aspects of her life.

You may be asking yourself why this episode is titled “Fuel for Thought”. Any guesses?

I mean if you know me, you know I love a good old play on words, hence the name of this new series that I’ve produced with Xact Nutrition.

Athletes train for hours, work with coaches on technique, join workout groups and sign up for big challenges but one of the things we feel could be overlooked by athletes that is so critical, is education regarding nutrition and how it helps you perform.

So we’ve put together a multi episode series to discuss specific topics pertaining to just that, in hopes that you come away with more in depth knowledge and a better understanding of nutrition.

On this episode of Just In Stride, Fuel for Thought edition, we’ll debunk various nutrition myths, with Elite road and trail runner, Alister Gardner.
When it comes to nutrition and best practices, everyone has an opinion. Whether it’s using salt tabs, choosing between real food vs gels or bars, identifying an ideal race weight, fasting during workouts or using supplements, we’ll provide detailed explanations and discuss the importance of each one.

So no matter if you’re an elite or just starting out, you’ll certainly gain something from this conversation and that’s no myth.
Here are some of the key questions we cover:

-Does taking salt tablets prevent/stop cramping?

-Is supplementing with maltodextrin beneficial for endurance athletes?

-Is it better to fast or fuel before training?

-Does carb loading enhance race day performance?

-The lighter you are, the faster you’ll race.

-Real food is better than gels/bars
