Jey's Podcasting Journal - 014 - My First Remote Guest Interview
play

01/17/21 • 8 min

I'm testing my recording setup with a two minute, mini-interview with my son. We are going to record the conversation over a mobile phone network.

PRODUCTION NOTES

I used a Samsung Galaxy Note 4 phone to record, edit and publish this episode. And I used Sony MDR-V150 headphones as speakers and spoke into the mic of the phone. I hand held the phone. I was sat on my bed facing my cloth headboard.

My son used an Apple iPhone 8 with a generic set of earbuds which had a built in mic.

Recording app: Rev Audio & Voice Recorder (for Android), from Rev.com.

Editing app: Auphonic Edit for Android.

Sound Treatment: Auphonic.com

Auphonic.com settings [to output as a 16bit mono WAV file]: Adaptive Leveler (on), Loudness Normalization (Loudness Target -19 LUFS ), Filtering (on), Noise and Hum Reduction (Reduction Amount: Auto)

I uploaded the resulting WAV file to Anchor.fm to host the file and added the music from their free music stock.

Anchor automatically converts the WAV file into a 128kbps .m4a file

Punch and roll is a technique used to correct mistakes we make during the recording process instead of later in the editing room. It can be a massive time-saver.

What is compression and what problems does it solve? Give me ten minutes and I'll tell you all about it. Well, as much as I can in ten minutes!

The short version is that a compressor reduces the dynamic range of a recording. Let's find out why that's useful.

PRODUCTION NOTES

Recording Mic: Zoom LMF-2 Lavalier mic

Recording device : Zoom F2 32 bit float Field Recorder

Recording location: Facing into my closet (I'm not liking the sound here. Sounds muffled and boxy. I guess the mic is being shielded too much)

Recording format: WAV (32 bit float mono)

Editing app (and EQ) : Audacity

Sound Treatment: Auphonic Productions at Auphonic.com

Auphonic.com settings [to output as a 16bit mono WAV file]: Adaptive Leveler (on), Loudness Normalization (Loudness Target -19 LUFS ), Filtering (on), Noise and Hum Reduction (Reduction Amount: Auto), Sample rate: 44.1kHz

Jey's Podcasting Journal - 032 - Raw unedited, untreated recording (feel free to skip it)
play

02/04/21 • 3 min

I had 10 minutes to publish before my midnight deadline. So I did a test of a condenser mic I had. It's pretty awful production.

But I had to publish. This show is my daily practice. It's the best I could do in the time.

PRODUCTION NOTES:

Mic: Marantz MPM-1000U

Recording software: Audacity

No editing or treatment.

Shipping your work consistently is more important than shipping perfect work occasionally. That's not an excuse to ship shoddy work. But sometimes the best we can do within the deadline is good enough. Our deadline is the promise we make to our audience.

And if you are making lots of mistakes while you are recording. Don't stop the tape. Keep going. Sure start again, but keep the tape rolling.

Jey's Podcasting Journal - Trailer - Welcome to Jey's Podcasting Journal
play

01/03/21 • 0 min

Hello everyone. This podcast is where I am going to experiment with improving my podcasting skills. I'm particularly interested in the simplest way to publish a podcast.

I've recorded and published this trailer just using my phone and free apps on my phone. Podcasting is hard-work but the barrier to entry is very, very low.

I'll publish and share what tech and techniques I'm using and the experiments I'm running to explore the limits of this amazing medium..

My aim for this show is to help your podcasting journey by sharing what I'm learning on mine.

Let's find out what it means to be a podcaster.

My name is Jey Jeyendran. Please join me by hitting "RECORD", every day, to see how we grow.

Experiment, experiment, experiment, and let's have fun.

With two TRRS inputs and one stereo headphone output, this tiny adaptor unit connects to any TRRS device. It allows you to connect to TRRS microphones as well as headphones to your phone. Ideal if you are out and about and want to capture an interview without your full rig to hand.
