In the third episode the show delves into the value of time discipline. Sounds a mite dull? Well you’re wrong. You could call it a ‘secret to being creative’ but that would be ‘clickbait’ and that makes me grit my teeth and wish to pour warm marmalade up the writer’s nose (yes, they would have to be held upside down first).

Creativity and being creative shouldn’t be taken too seriously. Did you know that 94% of comedians are 87% cleverer than fish? Yes. A lot of stuff doesn’t make sense online but Jelly Trumpet does. Why? Years of experience and a willingness to be silly every moment and for every breath on this planet.

Stuff We’ll Hear in this Episode:

  • How the literal world means you could be drinking a Scotch Egg
  • Nigel, the drummer performs his first solo
  • We meet Henk van Mann, Professor of Liquid Creativity
  • We talk Jungian archetypes, well a little bit

And I share stuff. In this episode I experience darkness and how to avoid the pits, wells, and puddles of despair that comes from creative intent.

You Are Your Own Medicine
‘You are Your Own Medicine’ is all about keeping a journal. The journal becomes your coach.

We’re all about the use of your time for the best in this episode. If you write and you find it difficult to start then pay attention to ‘setting a time to write’. This is hardcore. I suspect not many will be able to do it. But from my experience it works if you are persistent. I am also sure it works for any creative discipline. You just have to put in the graft.

In short, in this episode:

02:18 You Are Your Own Medicine
05:03 Challenge at Home, preparation & incubation plus ‘the compost heap’
07:46 Creative Hero Time, Eddie Izzard and the art of reincorporation
10:17 Guest Spot, with Jess King, actor & teacher

Guest Spot: Jess King, actor

11:35 Earliest creative memory
13:38 What influences you?
15:12 Documenting every audition and job
18:24 The Scowling Dusk
19:56 Which three things wouldn’t you take to a desert island?

Plus:

23:10 Challenge Jim, 10 ideas for plays featuring mice
24:30 Tot Topic, writing deadlines and self care
26:43 List of The Week, Jungian character types
28:29 Further Thinking Spot, Bored Panda

29:26 Music from ‘We Paint Houses’, ‘Don’t Take Me Home’

31:50 Ends
Guest Spot – Jess King, actor

We talk to the talented Jess King. I’ve had the joy of performing on stage with Jess, she saved my bacon every night. Jess is also a teacher, singer and dancer, plus working in the movies. We have a insightful conversation about creativity for an actor.

Here we are at episode 6 and it’s the last in Season 1 of our attempts to promote creativity for all and to make you in particular the most creative you can possibly be dear reader.
Reincorporation looks easy at first understanding. What does it mean to you? It’s the familiar, the familiar reworded by referring as to what went before. We like it because we recognise that the creator of the work knows what they are doing.

In your field what can you use more than once? Have you listened to the audience? What do they like? It’s where character traits lead to catchphrases and something even more important, anticipation.

When you watch a comedy and a situation crops up and you know the character and how they are going to react, then that’s anticipation, which comes from (character writing first) reincorporation.

Do subscribe to Jelly Trumpet for future ways of expanding your imagination. O’ and leave as a thrilling review, well, if you think Jelly Trumpet is of merit...

This is my favourite episode so far because I can look back and reuse ideas that went before.

Welcome to episode 4. This episode comes live from the castle keep atop the Howard Centre in Welwyn Garden City.

If you want to make the most of your creativity then you have to work for it. I’m not one for processes that go from A – Z because my mind doesn’t work like that. I suspect yours doesn’t either.

Like me, your mind goes from Z to the beauty of a leaf in a puddle to C then D, E, a story written, a picture made, the end of the Holy Roman Empire (that might just be me), to F, G, H and more...think of visiting all the planets and stars in the universe. I do.

Stuff We’ll Hear in this Episode:

  • I disappear from Google Maps and wonder where I really am?
  • I experience Linkedin overload
  • The power of mime and how to use it on radio
  • Writing letters, remember?

In the show I talk about stuff I’ve done. In this episode I talk about taking a holiday from writing plays and writing short stories. Just to see how easy it was I published this short story (containing three story threads) on Amazon Kindle.

You Are Your Own Medicine

‘You are Your Own Medicine’ is all about recording your creative moments, stuff that works and what doesn’t, it’s you making the difference by being your own coach / medicine.

We touch on a very broad part of creativity, preparation and incubation. Then we’ll go into mapping, creating a structure to hang your work on, like a skeleton.

For me, who writes characters I see it as a map of a world, which is fenced in. I then ‘release’ my characters and they run around. The best and the most annoying part of that is if you get that write they don’t do what you expect. Bastards.

In short, in this episode:

02:20 You Are Your Own Medicine, the process of creative mapping for characters and plot
05:05 Challenge at Home, combining ideas and mapping them to your work
07:55 Creative Hero Time, Pixar Studios and creative detail
10:17 Guest Spot, with James Berg, Captain of Picaroons, content marketer

Guest Spot: James Berg, content marketing

11:50 The different types of content
12:49 Earliest memory of being creative
14:05 Creative heros
15:38 What’s something no one knows about you?
18:52 Our key competencies
20:12 Checking in with the crew

Plus:

23:55 Challenge Jim, creating a character you would meet on a train
26:44 Tot Topic, writing Story Wars and publishing to Amazon Kindle
28:57 List of The Week, a variety of lists used for writing
28:29 Further Thinking Spot, The Secret Language of Symbols

29:26 Music from ‘We Paint Houses’, ‘No Fear’

33:24 Ends
Guest Spot – James Berg, Picaroons

We talk to James about running a content marketing studio. Picaroons is an original content marketing agency producing all manner of funky and creative content for a wide range of clients.

Time for episode 5. Another episode full of ideas for making yourself more creative and having some laughs along the way.

It’s not easy is it? Or is it easy for you? Being as creative as you can be requires effort, continually working at your craft. That includes ‘reverse engineering’. For example, copying out word for word your favourite book, sitcom or movie.

You see you can watch, you can listen and you can read but as a writer you want to know how the drama or comedy came about. You only learn that from copying and seeing how the writer spent his or her words.

Who is your favourite? The person or persons you admire, the ones that inspire, find them copy the best bits and you are going to learn a lot very quickly.

Do subscribe to Jelly Trumpet for future ways of expanding your imagination. O’ and leave as a thrilling review, well, if you think Jelly Trumpet is of merit...

Why is it the 8-bit edition? You’ll have to listen to the episode to find out.

Welcome to the second episode of Jelly Trumpet, the podcast making you more creative. Tips, tricks and ideas for expanding your imagination.

We’re not too serious and we have a fun show like an old-time radio programme. This episode we meet Nigel, the squirrel who loves drum solos.

Stuff We’ll Hear in this Episode:

  • How to use a red flag for argument’s sake
  • An award ceremony for award ceremonies.
  • 3 fabulous tweets from the Swansea branch of Waterstones

And I share stuff I’ve done as a creative writer. This episode I talk about my first stage play and about the regret of working with a friend.

You Are Your Own Medicine

‘You are Your Own Medicine’ is all about keeping a journal. The journal becomes your coach. You record what works for you and what doesn’t. Only you can make yourself as creative as a doughnut and pretty as a Victoria Sponge.

In this interlude I cover the power of the humble index card and the pleasure of using a scale on each journal entry.

How to be creative is all down to you. Finding your own time and space, the tools that make you creative AND productive, plus finding ideas you wouldn’t have got to without ‘being your own medicine.’

In short, in this episode:

01:52 You Are Your Own Medicine
05:29 Challenge at Home, ‘What if?’ Plus a quota.
07:41 Creative Hero Time, Edward de Bono, 6 Thinking Hats
10:01 Guest Spot, with Adam Hunt, White Label Comedy

Guest Spot: Adam Hunt from White Label Comedy:

11:02 Combining comedy with marketing
12:09 Knocking it [the brief] into shape
12:13 Accessing the Campaign
14:18 ‘I can do anything I want’
15:37 Innocent Drinks
17:01 ‘Different sizes of paper’
20:15 The One Show, Jeremy Vine and All Saints

Plus:

24:12 Challenge Jim
25:01 Hot Topic, ‘Saying NO!’, Owning your own work
27:03 List of the week, Waterstones Swansea and tweets ‘...the thesaurus leak’
28:24 Further Thinking Spot, Tony Buzan and mind-mapping
29:19 Music from ‘We Paint Houses’, ‘One of a Kind’

32:14 Ends

Welcome to the very first episode of Jelly Trumpet, the podcast for creatives; tricks, tip and ideas to expand your imagination. Jelly Trumpet is a fun and not too serious podcast which goes way, way beyond the simplistic ‘How to be Creative’ blog post loved by many tired content writers.

Dive in for silly, surreal and odd interludes, o’ and some great music from the house band ‘We Paint Houses.’

Stuff We’ll Hear in this Episode:

  • The famous glacier in Watford
  • Why we need a fourth traffic light
  • What if the United States of America finally invaded the United Kingdom?
  • We meet Arthur-Maurice ‘Butcher to the Stars’ (giving the lowdown on Rita Ora)

And I share stuff I’ve done as a creative writer in ‘Stuff I’ve Done’ interlude.
You Are Your Own Medicine

We’ll be tackling the core of this season’s help for creative types and that is ‘You are Your Own Medicine’. We’ll be encouraging you to take the ‘Challenge at Home’ and we have a guest spot in each episode that enquires of each person what makes them tick, where their ideas come from and their one magic tip that makes them the creative person they are.

All this and utter daftness, where, I, yes Jim gets challenged live on air with a creative exercise (spoiler, I may cheat depending on the amount of coffee in my system), we look at a hot topic to do with creativity and we have a ‘List of the Week’ everyone loves lists eh?

In short, in this episode:

01:54 You Are Your Own Medicine
04:53 Challenge at Home, Wildmind
08:33 Creative Hero Time, Michael Bentine
11:31 Guest Spot, with Mr b from ‘We Paint Houses’

Guest Spot: Mr b, from ‘We Paint Houses’

12:23 Logic Pro
13:50 Writing Down the Bones, ‘The Compost Heap’
18:49 Why getting the bass down is important
20:45 ‘What do you do when stuck?’
23:28 ‘What would you tell a 10 year old about how to be creative?

Plus:

24:53 Challenge Jim
26:38 Hot Topic
28:14 List of the Week, Top 10 Animated Movies
29:22 Further Thinking Spot
30:20 Music from ‘We Paint Houses’ play ‘Breathe’

36:36 Ends
Guest Spot – Mr b of ‘We Paint Houses’

Well, this is a pilot and Mr b was around so I thought I’d interview him. Why? He’s highly creative and has a rather unique way of working on his music projects.
We hope you love it and leave a review or follow us on social media.
If you don't like it then please keep schtum eh?
