Nigerian-born British dancer and actress, FEMI TAYLOR is best known for portraying Jabba the Hutt's Twi'lek slave dancer “Oola” in the 1983 motion picture Return of the Jedi, the last film of the original trilogy.
Fourteen years later, she reprised the role filming new scenes for the 1997 Special Edition release, and was the only performer from the original to do so. Because of this part, she appears at science fiction and Star Wars conventions around the world.
Taylor was cast as Tantomile in the 1981 original London production of the musical Cats, during which she learned she had been cast as “Oola” for Return of the Jedi. She appeared in the 1998 TV movie version of Cats as Exotica, a character that was created specially for her and exclusively for the film.
In this episode, we discuss her journey & passion for dance since childhood, being cast as a woman of colour in the 1970’s, pausing her 40-year career to be a wife & mom, what’ she’s up to with the writing of her memoir, and lots more!

HEAT SPELL (French: L'Été des chaleurs) is a Canadian short drama film, written and directed by Marie-Pier Dupuis. Released in 2023 the film dramatizes a true story from Dupuis's own childhood, when her mother accidentally left her sister locked in the car on a hot summer day. Dupuis herself didn't do or say anything about it because she was mad at her sister for other reasons.
The film stars Gabrielle Poulin as the mother, and real-life sisters Agathe Ledoux and Simone Ledoux as the sisters Maxime and Fred.
The film premiered at the 2023 Brussels Short Film Festival, where it was the winner of the ARTE Award in the international competition. It was later screened at the 2023 Abitibi-Témiscamingue International Film Festival, where it won the Prix Unis for short films.
The film received a Canadian Screen Award nomination for Best Live Action Short Drama, and Agathe Ledoux was nominated for Best Performance in a Live Action Short Drama, at the 12th Canadian Screen Awards in 2024.
I caught-up with Marie on the red carpet at 2024’s Vaughan International Film Festival (VFF) where the film was also featured to discuss why she made it, the effects of female sibling rivalry especially between sisters & family, seeing a scenario from different perspectives, knowing when to & not to speak-up, and much more!

10/21/24 • 24 min

Sarah Cartell grew up in a White supremacist family, controlled by her grandfather whose beliefs and violence mark them all. When an unexpected friendship, and the town librarian, open her mind and expose those beliefs as vile lies, Sarah begins digging up everything she can about the haters her family celebrate and her grandmother and aunt who fled long ago.
Determined to dismantle the White supremacist network in Canada, Sarah infiltrates a Neo-Nazi gang by beginning a tumultuous relationship with a skinhead that excites and confuses her. As Sarah races to stop the tide of hate crimes, her new friends are put in danger and a horrifying family secret begins to emerge. This unravelling lands Sarah in a psychiatric ward, begging the question—can anyone escape the love of a hateful family, unscathed?
In this interview, Aviva & I discuss why she choose the subject of WHITE & what was her own experience with it, what white supremacy looks like in Canada, how Sarah’s story reflects current issues around White supremacy, how her grandfather’s beliefs & violence affected her family, and Sarah specifically, when someone finds out the truth & it opposes what they grew up believing, what effect can it have on them and much more!

Thinking about your kids going back to school, what courses & extra-curricular activities to register them for, and what their future holds? Time to experience the incredible filmmaking of some of this year’s brightest VFF’s (Vaughan International Film Festival’s) Student Screenings that took place at York University’s Faculty of Fine Arts this June in this week’s DOUBLE FEATURE.
First up -The Test from RHHS STUDIOS, winner of the impressive Student Short Films line-up. Filmed entirely on a mobile phone, this psychological thriller depicts a brilliant student rushing to take a crucial exam, but when she finally stumbles in, a far more perplexing challenge presents itself. How does she use her skills to handle the pressure and pass? Featuring lead actress, Enchan Chen, directors, Nicholas Hoffman & Marcus Yang, Lucas Chee and teacher, Anna Wilson.
Written, directed, produced, edited, and lead actress, Lauren Pappas, Saint Elizabeth Catholic High School, Influence (d), showcases a teen influencer who has had enough of hiding her true identity. Instead of posting her normal weekly video, she posts an insightful self-monologue video to show others what it truly is like to be an influencer today.
In both episodes, I speak with the students/stars about their passion for filmmaking, what they learned shooting these films, how VFF can pave their future in filmmaking, theatre, & music careers, the challenges they faced, and more!

In this Janette’s TV & Podcast episode, Janette sits down with Canadian producers, writers, actors, comediennes, besties, and stars of the show New Eden currently streaming on Crave TV, Kayla Lorette, who portrays “Katherine Wryfield” and Evany Rosen, who portrays “Grace Lee” to talk about what motivated them to pair-up and create this eight-episode true crime mockumentary that follows “Katherine” and “Grace” from women’s rights advocates and feminist cult leaders to convicts. The series which starts in a women’s commune that is supposed to be a space for sisterhood and female empowerment, may sound dark. Really it is an exploration of gender and the courts told through a comedic perspective, and an incredible who-done-it murder mystery.

Janette's TV Podcast - X-Men's "Rogue", Actress & Activist, Lenore Zann
play

04/22/24 • 24 min

What’s your superpower? For actress and activist, Lenore Zann, best known for playing “Rogue” (based on Marvels comics superhero team) in the X-Men Series, the 90’s X-Men: The Animated Series Disney+ revival X-Men ’97, it’s fighting for the underdog. A skill she derives from her character as well as serving as a Member of Parliament and in the House of Commons of Canada for the Liberal Party for 12 years.
Lenore’s passion for helping others began in Sydney, New Sout Wales, Australia where she was born and heavily influenced by her grandmother. She emigrated to Canada with her parents in 1968, first residing in Regina, Saskatchewan, then Truro, Nova Scotia where she graduated from Cobequid Educational Centre. She later attended York University to study drama, fine arts and political science.
Prior to entering federal politics, an award-winning performer, Lenore has had various screen, voice-over, television and gaming roles since she burst on the entertainment scene at age 19 playing Marilyn Monroe in the live rock opera "Hey Marilyn!" She also represented the electoral district of Truro-Bible Hill in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly from 2009 until 2019 as a member of the Nova Scotia New Democratic Party and from June 9, 2019, until September 12, 2019, as an independent.
In this episode, she joins me to discuss what portraying “Rouge” means to her, how’s she’s adopted “Rouge’s” superpowers in her own life, what she wants women & girls to emulate from “Rogue’s” behaviour, her upcoming book “A Rouge’s Tale”, movie roles, Comicon appearances, and legislative endeavours!
