Embark with us and our esteemed guest, Anna Riggs, on a journey spanning continents and generations, as we trace the deep roots of her Italian lineage back to the quaint town of Ceglie Del Campo. Hannah's intimate narrative is more than a globe-trotting adventure; it's a heartfelt homage to her family's odyssey from Italy to Venezuela, and finally to the United States in 1955. Wrapped in the nostalgia of a Catholic school's corridors and the sanctity of orchard-laden convents, Hannah's tales are a mosaic of cherished memories. Her lilting school song transports us back in time, revealing the inevitable transformations of places once familiar.
Savor the episode's gastronomic expedition that contrasts Italian and American culinary traditions, where the simplicity of ingredients is a testament to Italian authenticity. Anna's insights reveal how a plate of pasta can tell stories of cultural adaptation – sometimes sweetened for American palates but always steeped in the legacy of its origins. We meander through the daily rituals of Italian marketplaces, with their unforgettable fish freshness and the symphony of regional dialects, offering a slice of life in Italy that's as rich and varied as its cuisine.
Finally, we journey through the evolution of banking from the 1950s to present day and uncover the challenges of preserving Italian heritage amidst the bustling modernity of Santa Clarita. The Italian Catholic Club's communal heartbeat echoes through our discussion, underscoring the importance of Italian cultural societies In America. And in a captivating revelation, we pay tribute to the ingenuity of Baldassare Forestiere with an exploration of Fresno's Forestiere Underground Gardens, a subterranean marvel hand-carved from the earth - a testament to the enduring legacy of Italian immigrants in America.

Witness a riveting journey back in time as we shed light on the incredible saga of Italian-American immigration. In an engaging tête-à-tête with Dominic Candeloro, a scholar of Italian American history and culture, we dive deep into this often untold tale. Drawing from the fascinating narrative of Candeloro's own father, an illegal immigrant who fought tooth and nail to gain citizenship during World War II, we piece together the profound impact of the war on the Italian American community and their subsequent integration into American society.
Growing up Italian American post-World War II was a unique experience, one that's brought to life by Candeloro. We challenge the misconceptions of Italy as a war-torn and impoverished nation, and shed light on how these misconceptions played a role in influencing Italian American pride. The conversation takes an intriguing turn as we discuss the shift in scholarship in the 1960s, leading to the formation of the American Italian Historical Association and a newfound appreciation for cultural continuity. Candeloro's unexpected journey to becoming a passionate advocate for Italian American culture serves as an inspiring beacon for future generations.
Preserving Italian American family history is no easy task, but one that carries immense significance, as Candeloro emphasizes. In an era where younger generations risk severing ties with their Italian roots due to immigration challenges and a lack of media representation, Candeloro offers a ray of hope. He advocates for documenting personal stories and upholding Italian traditions as tangible links to the past. Tune in to our conversation as we celebrate the joy of tracing Italian American ancestry and explore the profound impact of discovering distant relatives. Embrace the importance of recognizing and preserving ethnic identity in American history and culture. This is a journey you wouldn't want to miss.
Dominic Candeloro has been involved in Italian American studies for the past 50 plus years. He is the author of several books on the Italians in Chicago and served as Historical Consultant in the production of “And They Came to Chicago: The Italian American Legacy.”

Candeloro was born in Chicago Heights and grew up in an Italian neighborhood, “The Hill.” He holds a PhD from the University of Illinois and has taught History at UIC, UIUC, and Governors State University. He was honored with the Studs Terkel Humanities Service Award by the Illinois Humanities Council in 1999 for his efforts in documenting and interpreting Italian American culture.

Imagine packing up your life and setting sail for Italy with nothing but a suitcase and a dream — that's exactly the leap Paul Spadoni and his daughters took, and their tales of 'la dolce vita' with a twist will leave you in both stitches and awe. Adding more flavors to our cultural mosaic, Peter Francesi steps into the mix, painting a vivid picture of his family's Brooklyn grocery store and Italian-American life that bridges continents and generations. Their stories are rich, evocative, and a testament to the enduring spirit of those who chase the American dream, no matter where it may lead.
Wrapping up our journey, we honor the profound narratives of those who've navigated the turbulent seas of immigration and the shock of a new cultural landscape. We hear a soul-stirring account of a man's odyssey from a tiny Italian village to the vast expanses of the United States, his life interlaced with historical tapestries and the saving grace of American soldiers. And as we reflect on the power of language and identity, our guest recounts a childhood of multilingualism that weaves through the fabric of family, heritage, and the heartwarming community of an Italian restaurant.
