It Might Get Weird: Journeys in Veterinary Medicine

Sara Rae & Gary Marshall, DVM

Welcome to "It Might Get Weird," the podcast where we dive into the journeys of veterinary professionals.

Your hosts are Dr. Gary Marshall and Sara Rae.
Gary has been a veterinarian for more than 35 years. Sara has been a veterinarian for zero years. That's about to change and that's why we're here.

Our main focus will be to follow Sara on adventures as a Washington State University class of 2028 veterinary student. We’ll be along for the ride as she encounters challenges, and celebrates triumphs during her 4 year commitment to become a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine.

Along the way, we’ll also interview super interesting individuals who have valuable stories to share about their personal and professional journeys.

Dr. Nia Powell Joins Sara and Gary to discuss coping with initially not passing the NAVLE (North American Veterinary Licensing Exam). So many veterinary students are receiving an email this week announcing if they passed this beast of a test or not. Nia provides first hand experience, and maybe some advice, on how to cope with not passing, and with passing. This is an important episode if you took this test recently, or if you know anyone that did. And it's only part 1, so make sure and listen to Episode 34 (Part 2) as well. Thanks for listening.

Even though we struggled to find a time to record this, and didn't have a plan going about what we wanted to talk about, we ended up covering quite a bit of ground and discussing some interesting (and embarrassing for Sara) stuff. We answer "fan mail", get in the mood for fall, discuss what we should call our small contingent of loyal listeners, learn GenZ email etiquette, get a check up on Sara's level of panic 3 weeks in to her first semester of vet school and more.

Gary finds a corner of the floor in the basement at a hotel conference center outside of Chicago to capture his portion of the audio... and his body regrets that choice. Regardless, Sara and Gary discuss what superpowers they would request if given the opportunity, and have a good conversation about Sara's recent Physiology exam, and upcoming Anatomy exam, and what Gary learns, and who he meets, in Washington DC for his AVMA Board of Directors meeting, and in Chicago for the SAVMA Chapter President's Summit.
Enjoy. And Thanks for listening.

Sara and Gary hadn't talked in a while. They get a bit caught up and share what's been going on. They start out in a bit of a dull mood, but pick up a bit by the end. These times and conversations are all part of the journey that is Vet School and/or a Vet Career. Thanks for listening.

In this episode, Gary and Sara cover some random stuff, but don't cover a lot of ground. They record during one of the few really hot days of a Seattle Summer, and you can tell that they are both elated, and a little lackadaisical because of it. No major complaints! The week was absolutely glorious. Vet school starts for Sara in just 4 short weeks. Please enjoy. Thanks for listening.

After Gary was in Davis California to attend SAVMA Symposium, he took a little detour to Folsom California to visit his friends Alysson and Dr. Marcus Dela Cruz, and to finally meet their dog Charlie (a good boye) in person for the first time. They were so gracious to let Gary stay with them, and to record this impromptu interview while there young son was napping. Their story of navigating a long distance relationship and negotiating options to support each other during the vet school years will hopefully resonate with so many that are figuring that out now, living through it now, or who remember their own experience with relationships during vet school. Enjoy and thanks for listening.

It Might Get Weird: Journeys in Veterinary Medicine - S1 : E 41 - Special Guest Lauren Cabrera edition - before she starts vet school at WSU

This should probably be titled, "Wait... You did what?" episode. Or the "Gary seems shell-shocked". Gary is definitely not on his A-game here. It's probably because he had never met his amazing guest Nurse Practioner Lauren Cabrera before he hit the record button for his interview. It could have been because Sara wasn't present this time either. Sara was off the grid for spring break camping along the west coast somewhere (hopefully we'll hear about that soon).

Another reason that Gary was not quite on-point this week is because with each question he asked, he didn't seem to be able to process Lauren's amazing answers fast enough to be able to react and pivot the conversations. You do not want to miss this episode. Lauren's journey to this point - on the verge of starting vet school in the WSU CVM Class of '29 - is quite the ride.

We would truly love your ratings, reviews and pleas use the text link to give us your feedback and to let us know if we should follow up with Lauren once she's in school. Thanks for listening.
