It Happened One Year - Episode 23 - Mitch Don't Kill My Vibe
play

08/09/21 • 33 min

Wrapping up this tour of '94 born luminaries is the tale of former Chicago Bears quarterback and local media punching bag Mitchell Trubisky! From the mysterious circumstances surrounding the Bears drafting the Tar Heel hurler in 2017 through his being named the Nickelodeon's Valuable Player in his final game with the team (a playoff loss to the Saints this past January), Sarah & Joe go deep into Chicago football fandom, raise a number of spurious arguments for a conspiracy against them personally, break down who the Bears could have had from that stacked draft class, and look forward to the future at Halas Hall. Will the team actually move out to Arlington Heights? Is Justin Fields already the best quarterback in team history? And will Mitch torpedo the great thing going with his new team, the Buffalo Bills? Get ready to suit up and run out of the tunnel in this smash-mouth twenty-third episode of It Happened One Year!

It Happened One Year - Episode 8 - Shaquille O’Neal: The Big Aristotle
play

05/10/21 • 43 min

More than any other single person, one man towered like a colossus over all forms of media in 1994, the subject of It Happened One Year's slam-jammingest eighth episode - Shaquille O'Neal! Sarah & Joe explain how this episode ballooned from a mere nugget of trivia into a gold rush of stories surrounding the then Orlando Magic center - from his wildly successful gold and platinum rap albums (Shaq Diesel and Shaq Fu: Da Return) to his less well-received video game, from his hit autobiography to his popular appearances with World Championship Wrestling. '94 Shaq was possibly the greatest Shaq of them all!

And no discussion of The Diesel in 1994 would be complete without a lengthy look at his co-starring role in the volcanic basketball epic Blue Chips, starring Nick Nolte, J.T. Walsh, Mary McDonnell, and Ed O'Neill! The movie's bravura showcase of slam dunks, Larry Bird's sub-par acting, Coach Bell's moral ambiguity, and the opening five minutes being possibly the greatest in film history are all given their fair due. IHOY presents, at center, 7'1" from LSU, The Big Aristotle himself - Shaquille O'Neal!

Sic Semper Bubba! The many attempts to murder the 42nd President of the U.S. Bill Clinton in 1994 are explored in this sixth perilous episode of It Happened One Year! Marvel as Sarah & Joe rundown the efforts half-assed and otherwise of Ronald Barbour, Frank Corder, Francisco Duran, and Marcelino Corniel to snuff the democratically elected leader! Chortle at the stunning ineptitude on display from these would-be John Wilkes Booths! And woven through the episode, the hosts touch on other lesser known assassination bids, including amazing tales of survival, revolution, and retribution concerning Teddy Roosevelt, Andrew Jackson, Harry Truman, Richard Nixon, Barack Obama, and more! There's another national anthem, but it's not the one you cheer at the ballpark in this week's IHOY: Sic Semper Bubba!

Just in time for the playoffs! The underdog of underdog teams grabs the It Happened One Year spotlight this week, as the 1967 Boston Red Sox come out of nowhere to make their first World Series in 21 years, garnering the "Impossible Dream" nickname and potentially saving the franchise! Sarah & Joe get deep into Red Sox Nation and that '67 run - how Joe became a Red Sox fan, how the franchise and the fan base has changed since 2004, Carl Yastrzemski's Triple Crown season, the tragedy of Tony Conigliaro, the greatness of Bob Gibson, the surprise appearance of Roger Maris, and another game seven defeat in the 86-year losing drought. Along the way, some discussion of Aaron Judge's home run "record" chase, feelings about the steroid era's continuing debates, and very half-assed predictions for this year's champion ensue! Get your peanuts and Cracker Jack, folks!

It Happened One Year

It is the eve of the Major League Baseball strike - August 11th, 1994 - and acting commissioner Bud Selig sits alone in his offices, as solitary as an oyster. With the work stoppage looming and the season in jeopardy, he is visited by the ghost of former commissioner A. It Happened One Year - 1967 Episode 18 - THE Bigfoot Sighting
play

10/20/22 • 42 min

Five and a half decades ago today, the famed Patterson/Gimlin Bigfoot video was captured in northern California, and It Happened One Year is there! Sarah & Joe break down all the key figures in this hoax-leaning adventure, with commentary cribbed from Hollywood make-up artists and effects specialists, theories highly probable and completely unlikely, and a shoutout to the block-of-ice Sasquatch they saw, on display at all times in Austin, TX (big ups, Museum of the Weird!). The hosts go on mental journeys from belief to disbelief, discuss supernatural creatures and their prevalence in far flung world cultures, and speculate whether the Mrs. Bigfoot from this video is a Scorpio or not.

The old standard returns! It Happened One Year is once again looking at what aired on November 3rd in 1984, checking in over a year since exploring ABC's programming! This time, Sarah & Joe delve into the hard-boiled, sexy, action dramas that were Mickey Spillane's Mike Hammer, Airwolf, and Cover Up! Along the way, much discussion is made about Stacy Keach's mustache, how Oscar winner Ernest Borgnine found himself flying that helicopter, the tragedies and controversies of Cover Up, the poor adult audience subjected to early '80s television, and of course, the glorious return to It Happened One Year of show favorite, Bubba Smith.
