Welcome to Episode 128 Main Topic

  1. Blog by David Heinemeier Hansson https://world.hey.com/dhh/why-we-re-leaving-the-cloud-654b47e0
    1. He’s a Danish programmer, and the Creator of Ruby on Rails
    2. He is also co-founder of both Basecamp and HEY
      1. https://basecamp.com/
      2. https://hey.com/
    3. And, an Author
      1. https://basecamp.com/books/rework
      2. https://basecamp.com/books/calm/
      3. https://basecamp.com/books/remote/
      4. https://basecamp.com/books/getting-real/
    4. Basecamp has been at least partially in the cloud for a long time
    5. HEY was started in the cloud.
    6. Various platforms and technologies
      1. Bare vms
      2. K8s
      3. Google
      4. Amazon
    7. “Renting computers is (mostly) a bad deal for medium-sized companies like ours with stable growth.”
    8. Two ends of the scale:
      1. Low-end, when your application is simple, low workloads, you benefit from the simplicity of managed services
      2. Irregular “bursty” end, where you have a certain sustained workload, but it has a tendency to burst, and then settle.
    9. Middle of the scale:
      1. Workloads that have consistent traffic, and stable growth
    10. Cost vs Complexity
      1. A lot of server hardware could be bought for half a million a year
      2. Argument being, managing those servers.
      3. Half a million spend for HEY per year.
      4. But how true is that, really?
    11. And then there’s centralization...
    12. Who is David Heinemeier Hansson https://dhh.dk/?
    13. So what about this post.
