INXS: Access All Areas - Epi 106: Back in Time Series: INXS, Rocking the Royals in 1985
play

05/22/22 • 64 min

INXS: Access All Areas has largely taken a chronological deep dive over the last two years. However, today we are taking a “Marty McFly” trip back in the “DeLorean” and breaking from convention. As such, we travel back to November 4th, 1985, when INXS led a swathe of Australian talent by headlining the Charles & Diana concert: “Rocking the Royals”. Situated in Melbourne, Victoria, whereby the state was celebrating its 150th anniversary, The Arts Centre gig became the most hotly-contested ticket in town as 3000 lucky fans got inside the venue and 40,000 fans danced and celebrated outside with the help of some big screens. Freshly off the release of Listen Like Thieves, INXS powered through a blistering list of songs that had Charles clicking his fingers and Diana off her chair swaying to the dulcet tones of Michael’s evocative lyrics and moves. It’s been said that the 1991 Wembley gig was the zenith of INXS’ star. However, gigs such as the Royals gig paved the momentum and ascent necessary to climb into the international consciousness of fans, both local and afar. So, sit back, immerse yourself in 1985, and reminisce as we take a lovingly forensic look at what was “Rocking the Royals” with INXS!! INXS: Access All Areas - Epi 97: INXS Song Deep Dive: Never Tear Us Apart
play

03/04/22 • 35 min

With the final INXS track in Song Week upon us, we culminate with Never Tear Us Apart, a track that has grown from a beautiful ballad to truly iconic status. Ensuring a fourth consecutive top 10 from album KICK, Never Tear Us Apart is an alternative sounding Fats Domino-inspired waltz transformed into a beautiful, lush orchestral masterpiece.

Soaring the charts globally, this ballad never wastes a note, lyric, or moment, and still, 35 years later produces spine tingles and heart flutters. Whether it’s Michael’s evocative lyrics and vocals or the sublime instrumentation by the band, this song truly comes to life in the city of Prague with Richard Lowenstein’s award-winning video.

Covered by numerous artists since its release including Joe Cocker, Tom Jones, Natalie Imbruglia, and The Teskey Brothers, N.T.U.A. has transcended its origins with it now being the match day theme song for Port Adelaide Football Club, Michael’s funeral song, and the titular name of the band’s award-winning miniseries in 2014.

So sit back, grab a Kleenex and open your heart to this beautiful song.

Love and peace. ✌️

Haydn

INXS: Access All Areas - Epi 20: The Tim Farriss Deep Dive

Epi 20: The Tim Farriss Deep Dive

INXS: Access All Areas

Big brother, bandleader, bloody good guitarist!!! Timothy William Farriss could not only interpret the wonderful riffs and funk that little brother Andrew wrote but was the truly ambitious visionary for “how far” this little band, out of the northern beaches of Sydney, could take it! Forming INXS on the day Elvis died on August 16th, 1977, Tim’s distinctive guitar style and musical talent also required him to manage the band in their early days. Averting many a crisis, Tim remained resolute in his belief and quest that the original Farriss Brothers and soon to be called INXS, could take it from the sweaty pubs of Australia to the recording studio and overseas. So please buckle up as we celebrate, reminisce, and dive deep into one of INXS’s most popular members as we acknowledge the contribution of (play the f..... riff) Tim Farriss. INXS: Access All Areas - Episode 139: Elegantly Wasted Side 1
play

02/21/23 • 76 min

After much patience and time, we finally get to dive deep with our album review and a broader discussion on INXS’ 1997 Elegantly Wasted, recorded in Vancouver/Dublin by the late Bruce Fairbairn. Having enjoyed the longest recording hiatus of their career since 1993’s underrated Full Moon Dirty Hearts, the band returned with a vibrant, more accessible, and lyrically heartfelt album that has grown in appreciation with time. With 11, 12, and 13 tracks released in different formats for different regions, Michael and Andrew seem refreshed and reignited in their endeavors with songs that explore a range of musical sonics and styles but still remain quintessentially INXS. No mean feat that!!! Bee and I go through Side One with both a 1997 and 2023 lens to see if it still stacks up musically. For now, sit back and enjoy what was Michael’s final musical contribution to the INXS legacy. Enjoy. Love and peace ✌️ Haydn For more info https://www.inxsaccessallareas.com

Famed USA Video, Film, Doco and TV Director, Mark Pellington joins INXS: Access all Areas to dive deep on his fantastic video for 1993 INXS single “Beautiful Girl” amidst many other broader conversations.

Having gotten his start via MTV in 1983, Mark was at the forefront of when the video clip explosion was at the epicenter of the watching audience zeitgeist. Working initially with artists such as Leonard Cohen, De La Soul and PM Dawn, it was his future work with Pearl Jam’s “Jeremy” video that brought Mark’s unbridled talents into the forefront of the music industry heavy hitters. As such, he went on a peerless run Directing for U2 (One), Public Enemy (Shut em Down), REM (Drive), Alice In Chains (Rooster) plus Springsteen, Keane, The Flaming Lips and obviously our beloved INXS.

Interestingly, it was INXS that would bring him his sole Grammy nomination eventually losing out to Peter Gabriel’s “Steam” video (Urghhhh).

Mark generously opens up how personal grief informed much of creative ideas and we get to dive deep on his work with other artists, feature films and his love of the Australian music industry culminating a cliffhanger moment regarding INXS’ lack of recognition by the Rock Hall of Fame Committee that shall leave you clamouring for an early release of Part Two.

So sit back and enjoy the iconic words of Mark Pellington.

INXS: Access All Areas - Epi 188: Rockstar INXS: The Top 10 Reel Stories.
play

06/30/24 • 71 min

As we put a bow around our three part series on Rock Star INXS, we breakdown the Top Ten Reels from the show that highlighted the strengths and joys of the show that still resonate 19 years after airing. Unlike many reality shows that were steeped in manipulation, occasional humiliation and cheesy contrived antics, Rock Star INXS in 2005 was a breath of fresh air insofar as allowing contestants to develop their talent, thrive in musical clinics and perform to a band judging panel that were educated, empathetic and 100% versed in the task at hand.

With a catalogue of artists and songs from icons such as the Beatles, the Stones, the Police, Radiohead, Pink Floyd, Alanis Morissette, The Who and Living Colour, the contestants were able to draw inspiration from these classic songs whilst showcasing their talent to the world. That being said, today we count down, share and relive the 10 most memorable moments that made Rock Star INXS, despite its critics, a worthy and exciting chapter in the post Michael era. Plus providing the band with a renewed platform to continue doing what they loved doing, making and playing fantastic music.

Finally, we give a massive shoutout to the incomparable Garry Gary Beers who turns 67 this week and we share some exciting news regarding Andrew Farriss’ new single and video in our bumper news section.

So do yourself a huge favour and tune into the only 100% weekly dedicated podcast that is INXS: Access all Areas.

Episode 70: Kirk Pengilly Interview Part 1

It’s with true joy that Bee and I welcome the inimitable Kirk Pengilly to INXS: Access All Areas for what truly is a deep dive into INXS’ hardest working and versatile band member. Erudite, articulate, and with a faultless memory for detail, listeners shall be in-store for a unique trip down memory lane.

With no topics off-limit, Kirk recounts those critical early days where he moved interstate and skipped a grade thus famously meeting Tim Farriss in science class. A sliding doors moment that led to millions of peoples lives changing globally, with the seeds of INXS born.

Forever humble and gracious, we do reveal his iconic status in our very own “media wars” series and he naturally was a good sport about it all. So sit back, flick the Back to the Future and Oceans 11,12,13 trilogy and prepare for the first of our own “Kirk Trilogy”!!

Love and peace. Haydn
