WHERE HAVE ALL THE ROCK STARS GONE?
Rock and Roll, the Blues, and Jazz are America’s contribution to the arts, so why are we not fighting to preserve our own musical legacy and culture?
With roots from the early blues pioneers, the longevity of rock and roll is second to none. But strangely enough, those legendary rock heroes that we were so accustomed to hearing every time we turned our radios on, had mysteriously vanished from the mainstream. The music of the 1960s, 70s, and even the 80s was an important juncture in all of our lives. So many of us timeline life’s precious moments with the music we remember, when the music was so great, when the music mattered. The baby boomer generation is financially imperative to many, yet many of its entertainment standards have been renounced.
One day, the plug was pulled on those legendary music artists. Hackers began stealing music across the internet. Online music stores popularized cheap digital singles and neglected to promote full-length albums. Radio stations changed formats to accommodate talk show radio jocks, while rappers and electronic dance music menaced the airwaves. Notorious record companies began folding in droves. Record companies and radio stations that were once owned and operated by visionaries, were now run by accountants and lawyers, and the music world began promoting untalented wannabes. The economy plummeted, and radio stations became more concerned about how many consecutive commercials they could run instead of providing quality radio programming and entertainment value. Radio stations became corporate machines leaving no room for innovation. Throughout the 2000s, recording studios and live performances began using an audio processor called “Auto-Tune” to disguise off-key inaccuracies in vocal tracks. The device allowed virtually anyone without music skills to become a singer and new waves of mainstream radio stars were instantly fabricated. The business of music became stronger and more important than the art of music.
For more than a decade, I’ve been on a rock and roll pilgrimage to help promote and save the greatest music the world has ever known. Before the internet and Napster, virtuoso musicians traditionally introduced their music by way of mainstream radio stations while anxious music enthusiasts hurried to their favorite record stores and purchased a copy of the artist’s latest release. Talk radio wasn’t popular because there was way too much great music to play over the airwaves. Advertisers didn’t rule the airwaves, the music did. Rock legends toured the world to promote their latest albums and prices of concert tickets were extremely affordable. Proficient musicians, singers, and songwriters are what made the music so great.

Saxon were the leaders of the new wave of British heavy metal (they had eight UK Top 40 albums in the 1980s including four UK Top 10 albums and two Top 5 albums. They had numerous singles in the UK Singles Chart and chart success all over Europe and Japan, as well as success in the United States. During the 1980s, Saxon established themselves among Europe's most successful metal acts. The band toured regularly and has sold more than 13 million albums worldwide.
Originally named "Son of a Bitch, the band changed their name to Saxon in 1979.
Saxon have been cited as a major influence or inspiration by numerous bands, including Mötley Crüe, Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Anthrax, Pantera, Testament, Dokken, Skid Row, Dream Theater, Exodus, Overkill, King Diamond and Celtic Frost.

Hello once again everyone I’m your host Ray Shasho and welcome to another edition of Interviewing the Legends.
Steve Luongo has produced, performed, and recorded with several well-known artists including Leslie West of Mountain, Cream bassist Jack Bruce, Eddie Money, Alan Parsons, Todd Rundgren, Heart's Ann Wilson, Ritchie Blackmore, Mark Farner, Joe Walsh, Billy Squier. The most prolific and significant of all his work was with John Entwistle, best known as the iconic bass guitarist for The Who. The two musicians became the best of friends. Luongo produced, performed, co-wrote, and toured with The John Entwistle Band until Entwistle's death in 2002. Their last live performance together was in Japan during the A Walk Down Abbey Road tour. Later that year he was invited by The Who and Entwistle's family to write and read the eulogy at Entwistle's memorial service in London.
In 2007, Luongo served as producer and composer for a studio band he created with AC/DC bassist Cliff Williams, in which Williams recruited frontman Brian Johnson as the vocalist. The project later known as Forklift gave birth to 7 tracks. "Chain Gang on the Road" was the only track offered by the quartet and was briefly available for a free download during a run of US tour dates in 2007.
In 2012 Luongo began a musical partnership with Cheap Trick vocalist Robin Zander by forming The Robin Zander Band. Zander was among the first to be asked to appear in Luongo's documentary film An Ox's Tale - The John Entwistle Story about the late John Entwistle. (https://youtu.be/PwZrLRBkAfk)

Billy Cobham played as a drummer in pianist Horace Silver's band and toured the U.S. with him throughout the late 1960s. He then left to partake in Miles Davis' fusion ensemble where he can be heard on Davis classics such as 'Like-Evil' and 'A Tribute to Jack Johnson'. Eventually Cobham parted ways from Davis' group to work with the Mahavishnu Orchestra, where he was able to further explore his technique and fusion style which influenced many for years to come.
After deciding to part ways with the Orchestra, Cobham started his own band, Spectrum and signed with Atlantic Records. Spectrum's debut album featured a mix of jazz, funk and rock that allowed Cobham to further experiment with percussion.
In 2001 Cobham was named one of the 25 Most Influential Drummers by Modern Drummer magazine. He paved the way for future drummers by changing the way percussion is set up, the way it is played and enjoyed.
In 2011 Cobham started teaching drums online at the Billy Cobham School of Drums which is a ArtistWorks Drum Academy. In 2018 Cobham toured across the US a performance series called "Crosswinds Project" which was his way of revisiting his second album, Crosswinds. The tour re-comprised his original work from the 1970's which continued into 2019 as a celebration of Cobham's 75th birthday. Cobham continues to tour worldwide. Hello everyone and welcome to another edition of Interviewing the Legends I’m your host Ray Shasho.
Crystal Palace were founded in Berlin, Germany, in the early 1990s. The band received worldwide attention with the release of the Best-of-CD “Through the Years” in (2005), enabling Crystal Palace to perform live regularly with other international artists at various festivals in Europe. In 2011, divergent musical interests emerged within the band, resulting in a new line-up. This line-up turned out to be creative and harmonious, enabling the band to go on tour with the well-known German progressive rock band RPWL.
The band recorded the album “The System of Events” in early 2013 with guest artists Colin Edwin of (Porcupine Tree) and Kalle Wallner and Yogi Lang of (RPWL).
Crystal Palace was eventually signed by German label “Gentle Art of Music”. In 2016 the band’s most successful album until that point, “Dawn Of Eternity”, was released. The album reached #17 in the International AOR-charts.
Crystal Palace released “Scattered Shards” in 2018. The band changed labels and decided to go with Progressive Promotion. An important reason for this change was to show that the band can arrange their music without prominent support. The sound of the band is characterized by melodic passages and instrumentally well worked-out themes that, when listened to carefully, entice the listener to sink into a pleasurable musical experience with their own imaginative thoughts.

Norman Greenbaum is considered by many music experts to be a one-hit wonder. But when the lyrics to that hit meant so much to so many and with eternal impact... then who cares?
Greenbaum’s “Spirit In The Sky” echoed an inspirational message of optimism for hope of an afterlife. The song reached #3 on the Billboard charts and sold two million singles by 1970, and during an important transitional period in music that witnessed Album-Oriented Rock formats overshadowing Top 40 singles on the airwaves.
Greenbaum created one of the most recognizable guitar riffs in rock and roll history using an industrial fuzz tone. Released in 1969, “Sprit In The Sky” has stood the test of time. Greenbaum states, “Motorists actually still pull over to the side of the road when they hear the song being played on the radio.” And the song continues to be a heavily requested tune at funerals.
Rolling Stone magazine ranked “Spirit In The Sky,” #341 on the list of top ‘500 Greatest Songs of All Time.’ Countless musicians have mimicked their version of the celestial composition including Elton John, DC Talk, Darrel Mansfield, The Stovall Sisters (The back-up singers on the original recording), Doctor and the Medics, Nina Hagen, and Norman’s favorite cover version, The Kentucky Headhunters.
“Spirit In The Sky” has been featured in countless movies, TV series and commercials. The song has also been spotlighted on the 2008 music video game- Rock Band 2, enlightening a whole new generation of “Spirit” advocates.
Norman Greenbaum began a music career as a member of Dr. West’s Medicine Show and Junk Band. Their sole hit was, “The Eggplant that Ate Chicago” (#52 on Billboard’s top 100) in 1966. Greenbaum departed the band and began a solo career under the direction of producer Erik Jacobsen (Lovin’ Spoonful, Sopwith Camel, Chris Issak).
Raised of the Jewish faith, Greenbaum states that there wasn’t much resentment from the Jewish Community over his Christian-like lyrics, especially his reference to Jesus. The only true criticism came from the Christian side who were not very pleased with his lyric... “Never been a sinner I never sinned.” Greenbaum says, “I just didn’t know better at the time.”
Today Norman Greenbaum is 69 years old and lives in Northern California. His 1969 metaphysical one- hit wonder continues to be adored and emulated by countless fans. Most recently Peter Frampton covered “Spirit In The Sky” on William Shatner’s latest album, Seeking Major Tom.
Norman enjoys sponsoring races at the local fair. He says, “All it consists of is getting around thirty friends together, having a party, and getting your picture taken with the winning racehorse.” He’s also won a bunch of blue ribbons entering various works.

Mary’s most recent release “Can’t Get It Out of My Head,” is a collection of songs that she calls “essential” to her development as an artist ... “On top of all the madness that was happening in the world, I was grappling with the devastating loss of my mother and sister this past year and was feeling completely rootless. In an effort to find an anchor, a link to the past, a sense of home, I began to immerse myself in the comfort of music from my youth.

BILLY STOKES is a rock guitarist & songwriter from Tucson, Arizona. He went to So Cal and tried to make it but ended up in the military... the army to be exact. He traded his guitar for a gun and found himself in Germany. In 1997, Billy Stokes was injured in the line of duty. When he was released from the hospital he decided to pick up where he left off decades before and began writing the songs that appear on his powerful album Muscle & Blood. The album features rock legends ... Frank Marino, Pat Travers, Les Dudek, Barry Sparks, and Marc Storace of the Swiss rock giant Krokus. The album received the Producers Choice Awards 2020 Best Rock Album.
Pat Travers plays lead guitar on the songs “Firestorm” and “Money Slave” while Les Dudek plays lead guitar on “Down On Me” and “Fort Stockton Boogie.” The amazing Frank Marino of Mahogany Rush plays lead guitar on “The Beast.” Storace sings all 16 songs including the Robin Trower classic “Twice Removed From Yesterday.”
Guitarist Billy Stokes has also worked with Legendary Drummers Carmine and Vinny Appice, Heavy Metal Bassist Rudy Sarzo and Drumming great Corky Laing.
Stokes recently teamed up with Mike Varney producer, guitarist, and label owner. They are scheduled to record a new album with such greats as drummer Ansley Dunbar and special guests. They are finalizing the song arrangements and are very excited.
On a personal note, Billy recently rescued his in laws from the Ukraine....
