“It's an opportunity for so many small players. It’s a great place to get your start, to build a business, to be your own boss.” - Evan Iverson

As the skills gap gets wider, we have to ask ourselves why and how. The answer isn’t simple, but the point is, what are we doing about it? Recruiting talent poses a challenge in the trades industry which has been one part of the inspiration behind Frontdoor’s commitment to inspiring and empowering the next generation of skilled workers. Frontdoor is the largest and leading provider of home service plans and serves its customers through a network of skilled local contractors for home system and appliance repairs.
VP of contractor relations, Evan Iverson, joins us live from the SkillsUSA National Leadership Conference, to shed light on his perspective on the industry to give our listeners invaluable information on how they can also join the trades industry and the benefits of joining the Frontdoor contractor network.

As a small business looking for a steady stream of work, joining a network of professionals with built in credibility can be extremely beneficial in growing your business. Especially if you want to focus on your trade and not have to deal with the sales side of things. One of the biggest challenges in the trades is finding a skilled technician to be able to work on any appliance in a home created in the last 30 years, and people are feeling that. So being part of a reputable network like this is crucial to not only retaining talent, but giving a valuable service to customers.

This can be part of the solution in bridging the trades skills gap, by attracting talented individuals and giving them access to essentially work for themselves and build a business while being part of a larger network.

Tune in to find out how you can get involved and hear valuable advice for anyone interested in getting into trades and beginners!

Topics discussed in this episode:

  • Evan’s journey to Frontdoor and his responsibilities as VP
  • Benefits of joining a network like Frontdoor
  • Requirements and steps to take to join Frontdoor
  • Biggest challenges as a contractor
  • How to attract talent at a large conference such as SkillsUSA
  • What is contributing to the skills gap
  • Advice for students and parents of students to get involved in trades

In this episode of "Inside the Trades," we had the pleasure of speaking with Nate Clayberg, the founder of Career Adventure Academy, Business & Program Development Director of Cedar Falls CAPS and host of "That's a Job?" podcast. With a background in economic development, broadcasting and a passion for career exploration, Nate has been working to help students find their path in life and prepare for the workforce.

One of the unique approaches that Nate employs in his program is the concept of ikigai, a Japanese term that translates to "a reason for being." By helping students identify their passions, skills, and values, and finding the intersection between them, Nate helps them discover their own ikigai and develop a sense of purpose and direction in life.

In addition to ikigai, Nate also incorporates training elements picked up from a workshop with the Marine Corps. By instilling these values in his students, Nate helps them develop the mindset and habits they need to succeed in their future endeavors.

Whether you're a student, educator, or industry professional, there's something to learn from Nate's experience and expertise. So tune in to this episode of "Inside the Trades" to hear more about how Nate is helping students discover their ikigai and prepare for successful careers.

If you ever wonder how stores open back up after a hurricane, fire, flood, civil unrest or COVID it's companies like NEST and their network of providers that do the hard work. NEST is not only a major figure in facilities management they're also dedicated to closing the talent gap in the skilled trades, led by their CEO, Rob Almond.
Rob has spend most of his career at NEST and seen all the hard work the men and women who clean, repair and maintain the thousands of properties across their network in the US and Canada. This appreciation and dedication to community engagement led to the creation of NEST Nurtures and their Partnership with the Philadelphia chapter of NAWIC. These initiatives are just the beginning for what Rob and NEST are planning to do by leveraging the tens of thousands of providers to build a large coalition and find solutions to closing the talent gap in the skilled trades.
We are grateful and honored to join that mission and help Rob and his network get more people looking to the trades for a fulfilling life.
