Dr Dave Alred MBE on Dealing with Pressure
infinite pie thinking
10/04/20 • 55 min
Dr Dave Alred MBE is an Elite Performance Coach who has mentored and coached world class athletes and teams in multiple sports, including Rugby World Cup winner, Jonny Wilkinson as well as George ford and Johnny Sexton. In the golf, he has supported the likes of Luke Donald, Francesco Molinari and Padraig Harrington. He has also worked with the England rugby team, The British Lions, the Springboks, the England Cricket team, and top football teams such as Manchester City and Watford.
Focused on developing a performance mindset and attitude, Dave specialises in helping achieve elite performance whilst under pressure and delivering when tension is at its most extreme.
You will hear Dave's approach to giving feedback and how he constantly explores how to do things differently, and to keep moving things forward. He has a skill of reviewing, analysing and learning from various sources, and applying this in his approach with his clients, demonstrating that while much of his work is in the sports arena, these principles can be applied anywhere.
This conversation is not about perfection. It is about commitment, about putting your soul into it, it is about enjoyment and it is about knowing that you will experience the "ugly zone". It is also about knowing that going into the ugly zone is ok, as I know it helps me to focus on the process and effort without falling into 'negativity avoidance'.
If you want to know more about the topics that we discuss then you can check out Dr Dave Alred's book - The Pressure Principle.

Doc Ruben Perczek the High Performance Strategist
infinite pie thinking
03/12/21 • 52 min
Doc Ruben Perczek is a High Performance Strategist who specialises in supporting his clients to create success and make a sustainable impact through the development of top talent. He describes the people he and his team serve as "co-creators of change" and "conscious high performers." "Co-creators" because they know that sustainable positive change in high performance occurs through shared collaboration to find solutions that generate success, and "conscious" because they are aware that the path to success in high performance requires a constant openness to learning.
This desire to help others followed his own involvement and achievements in sports. 5 national championships, and a ranking in the world youth top 5 before his 15th birthday, Doc Ruben competed on the professional tennis circuit as a member of the Colombian Davis Cup team. His training in high-performance sports led him to discover his purpose. He looked to focus on and explore how to uncap the highest potential of high performers in sports and public life.
As a result he decided to train academically to increase his impact. His work at the University of California at Irvine led him to specialise at the Stanford School of Medicine where he began to develop his own methodology which he went on to eventually define as "The 7 Roots of Potential". Based on framework and his strategic discipline and approach, he helps public leaders and professional sports institutions. His focus and intention is top evolve high performing cultures, guiding the alignment within leadership teams and the development of their top talent, without killing spirit and passion along the way.
In the last 20 years, Dr. Ruben Perczek has worked to support and develop high performance cultures and leaders in organisations across various sectors and industries, including the sports and public service industries. His experience as a strategic advisor includes his work with The Oxford Leadership Academy, Governments of Canada and Mexico, Shambhala Institute of Authentic Leadership, International Forum for Environmental Sustainability - Government of Iceland, adidas NA and LATAM, The Office of the Mayor in Miami, Florida, ShopRite, Department of Athletics at the University of Miami, and head coaches and professional athletes in diverse Olympic and professional sports.
In this conversation we discuss what we mean by high performance, the difference between problem solving and possibility discovery, the idea of getting back to a blank slate and the concept of being ok with not knowing. We talk about the fact that we don’t have to always feel like we have all the answers. That if we move from constantly problem solving and looking to provide the answers and solutions, and move towards discovering possibilities and starting to ask more questions, and exploring more opportunities, then we can achieve great things.
Why not head over to docruben.com and you can find out more about Dr Ruben Perczek Ph.D and his work.

Darius Boyd on Achieving a Childhood Dream
infinite pie thinking
09/20/21 • 46 min
Darius Boyd is a man who set out with the childhood dream to play one game for the Brisbane Broncos in the NRL. After making his debut for the club at the age of 18, and winning a premiership in his first season, he went on to spend 15 years playing at the top level of the game. Darius achieved almost every accolade that rugby league could offer, playing and winning honours with his clubs, State and Country before retiring after the 2020 season.
You will hear Darius share how as an elite athlete, he learned about the importance of teamwork; the power of great coaches and coaching; and surrounding yourself with quality people and quality information, on and off the field. Rest assured that his journey in sports was much more than that. In 2014, Darius attracted national media attention when he walked away from the game to seek help for his mental health. He returned the following year to restart his career, earning the title of best player for the Queensland Maroons in 2016. Darius now applies the lessons that he has learned and experienced and the strategies both lived and studied to help others achieve the best from their teams through a focus on positive mental health.
From goal setting to the importance of hard work; the value a coach and mentor can have; learning from experience; feeling valued and feeling heard; your role in creating the right environment to inspire and support you; how leadership comes in many styles and approaches; how caring about the individual is the foundation of building a successful team; as well as helping those around to you to get better, to be better and to do better, were just some of the things I took away from this conversation.
They say there is no ‘I’ in team, but Darius Boyd has a slightly different spin on it, and you can head over to theiinteam.com.au to find out a lot more. I would also recommend that you check out his book “Battling the Blues” if you get the chance. I also suggest you read the original post that Darius posted on LinkedIn that inspired me to reach out to him in the first place. You can find it here - Five Reasons For Maroons Origins Success
So a big thank you to Darius and to you for taking some time to check it out and give this a listen. If you enjoyed it, let me know what you took from it and I would love it if you shared it with someone else that you feel will get something from it.
Of course if you are working on your own goals and performance improvement and want to explore how our coaching could help, you can reach out to me over at infinitepie.co.uk.

Professor Damian Hughes on Culture of High Performing Teams
infinite pie thinking
08/13/20 • 66 min
Professor Damian Hughes started his life with a boxing gym as his playground. It meant he was around elite sports from as early as he can remember, and it was this environment that sparked his interest in the culture of high performing teams and individuals. In fact he learned many lessons in that gym, as it was run by his father, a man who eventually had a road named after him due to the role he played in many others lives.
Of course it wasn't necessarily a light bulb moment or the instant inspiration that is the stuff of the movies. These lessons and values were learned over time, and took a period of self awareness and self reflection.
Damian has gone on to be a best selling author, international speaker and combines a practical and academic background within sport, organisation and change psychology to work as a trusted adviser to business, eduction and the sporting elite, specialising in the creation of high performance culture. He has been called the coaches' coach.
He is also the co-host of the fantastic High Performance podcast alongside Jake Humphrey. New episodes are available each Monday, so why not start the week with Damian and Jake and The High Performance podcast and end it with some infinite pie thinking.
If you want to know more about Damian, then follow him on instagram @liquidthinker or check out his website liquidthinker.com.
I would love to know what you think and if I can help, so you can get in touch by emailing [email protected]. or you can find me on all the socials.
Thanks for listening, now go and do stuff that matters and have a great one.

Michael Lynagh on Being A Team Player
infinite pie thinking
08/28/20 • 70 min
Michael Lynagh is an Aussie Rugby legend and has a list of achievements and accolades that many would envy, but you wouldn’t always know it when you speak with him. Michael is a very humble man and spends much of his time focused on how he can help those around him to look good. Whether it be as part of the World Cup Winning team, captaining his country, playing professional rugby in England or his role as MD of Dow Jones Corporate EMEA, I was keen to talk with Michael Lynagh on being a team player.
Playing at a time before rugby was a full time career choice, Michael gives a new insight into how to achieve high performance and the challenges that you will have to face to stay there. Michael talks of having natural talent, but also making sure that you don’t waste it. Then there is all the practice, preparation and putting in the extra efforts and as importantly what you learn from it rather than just going through the motions.
Make sure you listen carefully as he shares his perspective of wanting to deliver for the team and team mates and the expectations that brings. Of course, we also talk about how Michael sees himself in a business environment and even the sense that he is not satisfied yet, no doubt based on the standards he sets for himself. But rather than putting on an act he talks of the benefits of knowing and being true to yourself. Michael, in his role as Managing Director, also shares how the lessons he learned from his time at elite levels of sports have been applied to business.
As I mentioned, Michael is an incredibly humble guy and it was an absolute pleasure to chat with him.
So take a listen and let me know what you think...

Jake Aliker on creating a Formula 1 Performance Mindset
infinite pie thinking
09/07/20 • 63 min
With over a decade of experience coaching in elite level sport, Jake is passionate about helping people reach their highest potential. Moving from a strength and conditioning coach for a professional rugby team to the Formula 1 paddock was always going to be a steep learning curve. Taking on the role as the personal performance coach for Max Verstappen as he started his career at Red Bull Racing was a challenge that he grabbed with both hands. Whilst max had spent his life around race tracks and the Formula 1 paddock, this was a new environment for Jake. He also realised that the role was a lot more than just helping Max to be the fittest man in the race. For Jake Aliker, this was about creating a Formula 1 performance mindset.
In this conversation with Jake you will hear about his own development as Max's former performance coach. He will share the relationships that he developed with team, how to cut through the noise and focus on his role in helping Max go faster. He shares how we all have 'anxiety' but how an F1 Driver will often use this as a signal to push harder.
Jake is now heading up performance for the Porsche Supercup team GP Elite and shares his insights on how he sets this up for success. Having set up his own coaching company Force and Grace, Jake also discusses how the lessons he has learned in elite sports and racing, can benefit businesses by creating a Formula 1 performance mindset.

Julian Dowe on building Football 4 Football
infinite pie thinking
11/08/21 • 52 min
Julian Dowe started his career as a professional footballer. As he was breaking junior goal scoring records in the Salford leagues he was playing in he became highly coveted by the likes of Manchester United, Manchester City and Leeds United. After a brief spell at United, he signed as schoolboy for Everton, then went onto Manchester City where he started training and playing with first team squad at 15. After a period playing for Wigan, he became the youngest British player to sign professional contract in Spain at age 18. There were a few more moves but a persistent knee injury saw him retiring from the game at 26.
But it is not just his time spent ‘in’ football that we are discussing today, but the time he has spent ‘for’ football. As Julian shares how he came up with idea and has developed the resource platform Football4Football.com that supports players of all levels on what he calls the four pillars of the game.
I think this is a fascinating story and I am sure that you agree, so I want to thank Julian for sharing it with me. It wasn’t a matter of everything he touches turns to gold, there are lessons from success and from failure. There is spotting opportunities, and facing and overcoming challenges. There is learning from your own experiences and there is surrounding yourself with people who can provide their experiences knowledge, talent and skills. But most of all there is doing the work.
So thanks to Julian Dowe for taking the time to walk through his story, insights and perspective and the lessons that he has learned on how to continue to get better. Make sure you head over to Football4Football.com to check out what he is talking about.
There is a lot of lessons in this one, so take a listen and let me know what you think.
Of course if you are working on your own goals and performance improvement and want to explore how our coaching, workshops and seminars could help, you can always find more information, resources or just reach out to me over at infinitepie.co.uk, and on the various various social media platforms.
