How Fast Should You Talk on a Podcast? (Words Per Minute)
Improve Podcast School - Podcasting Growth, Marketing and Monetization Tips
03/07/22 • 10 min
How Fast Should You Talk on a Podcast? You should speak at about 150 to 160 words per minute. It is the upper range that people comfortably hear, vocalize words, and it ensures full comprehension of your material.
Full episode transcripts are available at: improvepodcast.com/school
Research Key Findings:
According to the National Center for Voice and Speech, the average rate for English speakers in the US is about 150 words per minute. The average speaking rate can change for your project. And there are many professionals who are known to speak faster or slower deliberately.
In 1976 psychologists looked at speech rate and persuasion and concluded that faster speakers, talking on average 195 words per minute, were more persuasive than slower speakers averaging 102 words per minute. This study suggests that speech rate functions as a general cue that augments credibility.
However, in 1991 a study on rapid speech suggested a more complicated relationship. Researchers conclude that fast-talking increased persuasion when messages were in general disagreement with the audience's views.
We answer 5 key questions regarding the average speaking rate:
- How do we measure Average Speaking Rate?
- How Fast do Professionals Talk?
- Do you speak too fast, too slow, or just right?
- How to Use Rate of Speech Effectively?
- What is the ideal rate of speech?

How To Prepare for Recording an Episode for Highest Impact
Improve Podcast School - Podcasting Growth, Marketing and Monetization Tips
02/28/22 • 9 min
How Should You Prepare for Recording an Episode for Highest Impact? Dedicate time for preparation, have a podcasting persona, understand your listeners, use a script, have a production schedule.
Full episode transcripts are available at: improvepodcast.com/school
Research Key Findings:
57% of lower-revenue podcasters don’t use any episode drafts or use only a general outline of the episode when recording. That is a lot.
They are betting on improvisation skills and their general ability to talk competently and in an entertaining way about the subject of their podcast.
On the other hand, 74% of higher-income podcasters have either a detailed outline or a full script ready before the recording session.
Being that prepared allows for a great level of control and story flow and allows you to take your listener on the journey you can fully design and predict.
Here are 5 Ways to Look at this Data to Help You Make the Best Choice for Your Show
- No preparation is accepted only when you are highly competent, or improvisation is your thing
- You need to come prepared for a podcast recording
- Top performing podcasts dedicate time for preparation
- Importance of preparation is greater if you are just starting out
- Put a good content production schedule in place

Recording Fully Scripted Episodes vs. Working with Outlines
Improve Podcast School - Podcasting Growth, Marketing and Monetization Tips

Recording Fully Scripted Episodes vs. Working with Outlines
The study of over 1,000 podcasters has revealed that:
- 38% of higher-income podcasters record their episodes having a full script ready.
- On top, an additional 36% have a very detailed outline.
This means that 76% of successful podcasters come highly prepared for their recordings.
Doesn't this limit creativity? Not at all. It Actually shifts when your creativity is being used. When recording scripted podcasts, you focus your creativity during the writing of the script. And when recording, you focus on a perfect delivery of what you have already prepared.
The study of podcasters has found that higher-income podcasters, those who earn at least $50,000 per year from their show, are 2.2 times more likely to use a full script for recording.
This was determined to be one of the TOP 10 things that successful podcasters do differently.
Should You Record Scripted Episodes or Use Only Outlines?
A single-person podcast should be scripted. When doing interviews, you need to have a target your interview is trying to accomplish, the information you want to obtain. Reach this target using an outline of questions. When you mix interviews and narration, the narration part should be scripted.

Main Difference in Monetizing Large Show and a Niche Show
Improve Podcast School - Podcasting Growth, Marketing and Monetization Tips
02/14/22 • 9 min
What’s the Main Difference in Monetizing Large Show and a Niche Show? Large shows, that have a broad audience, monetize mainly with ads and sponsorships. Small shows, with 1,000 listeners per episode can monetize successfully selling their own services and products.
Full episode transcripts are available at: improvepodcast.com/school
Research Key Findings:
The data clearly shows us that small podcasts can be monetized successfully. Earning $50,000 per year from a show is possible if you have 10,000 listeners, 5,000 listeners, or fewer.
Naturally, with hit shows above 20,000 listeners per episode the story, marketing and monetization, is much different than with smaller shows. Shows like this have a lot of flexibility and way more options when it comes to making money, although in most cases producing a show for a mass audience is much harder then producing a niche show.
But you don’t have to grow a huge audience. You can nurture a smaller community of highly engaged and devoted listeners and still be very successful.
It all comes down to the business model you want to have.
Let's explore those core differences. It starts with the core distinction that big shows follow the creator/publisher model, while small shows in most cases operate indie or marketing-focused type shows.
- Big podcasts are successful as they appeal to popular beliefs or emotions
- Awareness marketing campaigns work great on big shows
- Small shows focus on presenting a small portfolio of high-ticket products and services
- Small shows can be best monetized with their own services
- Big shows have more broad topics for their episodes while small podcasts can get more precise
