Honey Dijon - Gangstercast 46
I'm A House Gangster presents The Gangstercast
10/22/14 • 59 min
Gangstercast 46 comes from the fabulous Honey Dijon. Based in NYC but Born and raised in Chicago; the home of house music, Honey is known for her unique take on the Chicago sound with inflections of the deep New York underground. Honey is one of the few DJ’s in recent years to defy pigeon-holing. She draws from a wide repertoire of musical styles from old school Chicago House, disco, tech house, tribal, funk, soul, and R& B. She has graced the tables from Ministry of Sound London to Ushuaia Ibiza, Panorama Bar Berlin, Stereo Montreal and everywhere in between. She has also shared the decks with none other Danny Tenaglia, Derrick Carter, Green Velvet, The Martinez Brothers, Satoshi Tomiie, and Quentin Harris.
Like many involved in the scene, her love affair with music began upon hearing her parent’s soul and r&b records at home. Soon she wanted to be the one dropping the needle on the record whenever they held parties in the family basement and the lure of club life soon followed. Before long she was obsessively collecting her own music from record stores, which is where Honey met and formed a long lasting friendship with Derrick Carter, who became a mentor. It was he who introduced her to the underground of Chicago where she was exposed to the sounds of jacking house and Detroit techno.
After relocating to New York City, Honey also met another music giant Danny Tenaglia, whose legendary sets at Twilo were also a major source of inspiration. “Danny heavily influenced my sound as a DJ’, says Honey. “The drama of his delivery and risk taking always informed me of how I wanted to present music. Of course, Derrick and Chicago house were also very influential in my development as an artist, so it’s this combination of Chicago and New York that has helped me develop my signature sound.”
Known for her passion and integrity in her sets, this week Honey takes us back to the old skool sound, with this hugely authentic mix, fusing the bump of Chicago with more classic New York sounds and other European influences, dexterously flowing between house and techno, with a warm, hypnotic feel. The art of mixing itself is very important to Honey, and when telling us of the tracks she chose in compiling this mix, she explained; “I did a bit of research and did a bit of crate digging to try and give a bit of swing and soul but in a modern way.”
When explaining to us how this particular mix represented her as an artist, she told us; “Well being from Chicago, I wanted to mix a bit of my roots with what's happening in dance music at the moment. Since there has been a resurgence of House in Europe, I felt it was the perfect time to pull out a few forgotten classics.”
Being a firm believer in the underground sound, and being a protector of the faith, When asked what the House Gangster movement means to her, she replies; “I just feel it's a gang of like-minded people representing the love of house and paying respects to where it came from and to also where it’s going.”
Honey describes the ‘House Gangster sound’ as “Boompty but with guts and soul! Also with a bit of a techy edge top to it”
Smokingroove - Gangstercast 43
I'm A House Gangster presents The Gangstercast
09/10/14 • 120 min
As two wise Chemically enhanced men once said, ‘The brothers gonna work it out’. It’s an adage the Smokingroove brothers - Safe and Marko - have taken to heart and we’re glad to have worked out getting them on the Gangstercast for episode 43.
Starting off the main part of their career in their native home of London, they cut their teeth on the underground club scene in the 90s and their style of “deep, Chicago-flavored House music with a Jacking vibe” has seen them sign records to Roger Sanchez’s Stealth Records and DJ Sneak’s Magnetic Recordings, as well as penning a string of releases on their own Illuminati Recordings imprint.
Their love of House music has prevailed and they reflect, “[House music] is the spirit of clubs, the people we meet and the life we have. For a musical genre, it’s pretty special in that way.“
They’ve hosted radio shows for over 10 years and it’s perhaps on the DJ front that the brothers have made their biggest impact. With both Safe and Marko now based in Dubai, they hold down the most coveted residency in the Middle East at the much-copied but never bettered Nasimi Beach, and have played huge events such as Creamfields Abu Dhabi, Pete Tong’s Wonderland, El Divino Ibiza and Savannah Ibiza as well as countless legendary UK clubs. More recently they have become brand ambassadors for Adidas Originals, New Era & Pioneer DJ and they have mixed the first in a series of Pacha Dubai CDs.
Episode 43 of the Gangstercast allows Smokingroove to flex their DJ muscles, as they explain, “Over the last 16 years, we’ve built our own mental-inventory of great records and music we honestly love and feel. The mix captures our love of the sound. This mix was recorded live so everything in there is pretty indicative of what we play. You’re getting the Smokingroove sound in this mix. This isn’t a practiced, studio set. Real deal, one-shot take.”
They add that the House Gangster movement is, “like a global clique of people who all vibe off the same music and mentality. House is a broad genre so this feels like membership to an exclusive global family within that. Real underground House music with a street-edge to it. A little something for everyone but keeping the beats correct and a definitive underground vibe.”
T.B.F. - Gangstercast 40
I'm A House Gangster presents The Gangstercast
07/30/14 • 121 min
TBF is up for Gangstercast 40 and is introduced by DJ Sneak: "There’s this kid called TBF from Romania, he’s 19 years old, and he’s coming up with some of the toughest house sh!t that I’ve heard from Europe, Eastern bloc Europe, you know what I’m saying, these people just now got decks and parties and sh!t you know. So this guy is 19, he’s making some really really good stuff. Jackin’, energetic, it’s not techno, it’s not electro, its straight house" (DJ Sneak interview for Getthecurse.com 2008)
Growing up with Cassius, Armand van Helden, Daft Punk, Basement Jaxx and Roger Sanchez, it's no wonder that TBF remained loyal to house music, after experimenting with other genres. It's not hard to define his style - jazz influences, soul, funk and disco are always present. This style has found its way onto esteemed underground labels including Robsoul, Minority, Oomph and Jump picking up plays from House legends such as DJ Sneak, Derrick Carter, Mark Farina and Phil Weeks.
The Romanian DJ and producer talks about the House Gangster ethos, “House music puts together world music with electronic music in a way that offers absolute freedom. That's what house music is to me: a bridge, a sonic one! Being a gangster is all about attitude. You can have any sound you want, but only one attitude!”
Discussing his mix, he adds, “I tried to find tracks I never really got the chance to play or they remained “hidden” for a long time, may they be new or old. I think that a DJ set should always be like a story, things have to happen in order to be interesting. And i like to make things interesting. Nothing extra to mention about this mix, as I believe that’s one of house music’s side effects: you don't feel special, you feel humble, always feelings like "that special" set is still waiting to be discovered.”
Mo'funk - Gangstercast 16
I'm A House Gangster presents The Gangstercast
08/14/13 • 131 min
WOW! Gangstercast 16 is quite the special treat from Ibiza-based Mo'funk. 56 tracks of Gangster flavoured house, hip hop and party jams expertly squeezed into two hours. And if that wasn't enough Mo'funk's production and DJ sidekick Sergio Selim (aka Don Dolla) also showcases his talents on the Talkbox!
Speaking of the mix, Mo'funk says, "It's a great opportunity to flex my range as a DJ. I'm not one to be pigeonholed into any particular sound, this mix shows the lengths I've gone to to select music from the years that have the 'gangster touch'. When it comes to a mixtape, I got that game locked! After all, its how I first met Sneak back in 2006 at a friends BBQ in San Francisco. Our Mergio tracks are now up and available for free download. 2 free EP's and 1 more to come next month (go to www.soundcloud.com/themergio) We've taken the elements of G-Funk and have made some fresh new sounds - a 100% dedication the sounds of the G! Gangster Boogie from the heart."
"I made this mix a little different to the regular Gangstercast sessions. As a versatile DJ I have to go back to my roots on this mix, for me, the Gangster movement started way back in the funk and boogie days of the late 70's and 80's with cats like Roger Troutman, George Clinton, Prince etc. I'm a huge fan of the G-Funk movement in Hip-Hop from the 90's and I certainly pay tribute to the artists that made those classics like Ice Cube, Snoop Dogg, DJ Quik and all the legends in the gangster Hip-Hop movement. Of course there is sounds from the 80's Boogie era, classic Chicago House, and current House jams that have that element of the G. Expect to hear scratching, juggling, looping and all the techniques of what a real DJ is supposed to do!"
Mo'funk is a House Gangster through and through, with a deep rooted love of real, raw House music. "Being a House Gangster is about having a true love for House music, its about standing up for what's right in a genre thats been tarnished so much lately from commercial acts wanting the $. House music is a feeling, that feeling you get when your entire body just wants to move, you feel it inside your soul, your whole being just wants to groove! House music is not a trend or fad, its a way of life! I will always be a G when it comes to showing people what real house music is. It has elements of times past, influenced by all the greats that have made an impact in the musical landscape, the kicks are big, the hats swing, the baselines are always deep and funky. Its that sound that you just want to snap your neck to. Its got the disco, funk, and soul sounds of yesteryear with the techniques and vibe of today."

Joeski - Gangstercast 14
I'm A House Gangster presents The Gangstercast
07/10/13 • 113 min
Joeski steps up for Gangstercast 14 while his 'NY Raw' release (produced with Audio KoDe) for our label continues to do damage on the world's dance floors.
The mix showcases Joeski at his best, with almost two hours of music including one of his favourite Latin infused summer joints. Joeski says he "went back to his roots" on the mix and that it "represents my culture and who i am as an artist". We hear that loud and clear at IAHG HQ! Talking about the I'm A House Gangster sound he says it's "raw, jackin, banging, hypnotic, deep in your face house music". We hear that loud and clear too!
Raised in Corona, a large Spanish area in the borough of Queens, New York, Joeski started playing house parties in 1989 and hasn't looked back since, staying true to the underground house sound throughout. Building his reputation in the early 90's at New York clubs and events like The Limelight, NASA, Save The Robots, The Chocolate Factory and Together he was soon touring the world. After building his studio and honing the craft of production at the end of the 90's, he exploded into people's attention with a series of tracks and remixes on Siesta, Tango, Electric Sol and more. He also launched his own label Maya Records, which was highly sought after from the early releases thanks to his collaborations as part of 6400 Crew and outings with Onionz and D'Julz. The label welcomed guests like Chus + Ceballos, Tony Senghore and Nick & Danny Chatelain.
The early success led to remix work for the likes of Sneaker Pimps, Dajaé, Delacy, Dirty Vegas, Medway and DJ Sneak, and collaborations with DJ Chus, John Creamer and Stephan K, Steve Smith (Dirty Vegas) and Matthias Heilbronn. The results have graced labels such as Hooj Choons, NRK, Ministry, Stealth and Junior Boys Own.
Harry Romero - Gangstercast 10
I'm A House Gangster presents The Gangstercast
05/09/13 • 59 min
Harry Romero: "What does house music mean to me? How do you describe something that is in your DNA? It's my first language."
And with that fine introduction, we are honoured and rather excited to welcome undisputed House legend Harry Romero to the Gangstercast. Harry has been at the top of his game for more than 15 years - as one of the founding fathers and most prolific artists on Subliminal Records, as well as the creator too many cross-over and underground hits to mention, he has raised the bar for prime time dance floor anthems again and again. He also just released the awesome 3 tracks EP 'Back From Saturn' on our very own I'm A House Gangster label.
We asked Harry about his Gangstercast: "This mix represents me as an artist because at the root of me is Chicago, NY, NJ, London, and Paris. The music I play can be attributed in one way or another to these seminal places that have been a huge part of the development of me and house music. The tracks chosen were to showcase the "BACK FROM SATURN" EP. Two of the three tracks are in the mix and it was important for me to paint a picture of what I would want to hear on a night out. It's not about hands in the air here, but it's more about getting back to dancing - isn't that part of the reason we go to night clubs?"
This ethos reflects the Harry Romero that can be found behind the decks all over the world every weekend: "The best form of flattery for me as a DJ is to have the people dancing. yes, hands in the air are cool too but it's all about sweating on the dancefloor."
Onto matters of what being a House Gangster is all about and Harry is down with the cause: "What House Gangster means to me is standing behind what you believe and staying the course no matter what. It means not selling yourself short or following the status quo. It means staying true to the essence of house music... the vibe and not the fashion. I would describe the House Gangster sound as pure groove. Not overdone. The few basic sounds the music contains is all you need to get your point across - it could be just a kick and a high hat but that kick and high hat is all you need to get that vibe across. It adheres to no formula and evokes a vibe from the days when this music was new and cutting edge. Everything is based around the beats. It's the antithesis to what is now called EDM, which is basically repackaged trance."
Ralo & Strada | Gangstercast 91
I'm A House Gangster presents The Gangstercast
09/14/16 • 62 min
Episode 91 of the Gangstercast series is brought to us by Ralo & Strada aka Raul Peña and Felix Estrella, who are two incredible producers originating from the world of Hip Hop and now making House - one living in Miami and the other in Atlanta. Being an audio engineer for big Hip-Hop names in the early 90’s Ralo eventually got tired and felt like it was time to flip the script and speed up the tempo creating fresh house grooves. His productions have been played by Jesse Perez during BPM 2014 and the release of his EP on Sishi Rosch & Diego Moreno's imprint Digital Delight in 2016.
Strada was born in the south of Lima Peru, he then made his way to the U.S. as a young boy. Constantly in the studio, working diligently and searching each day for new sounds, he fell in love with the raw, filthy, nasty, funky and groovy beats of house music. It was in 2014 when they crossed paths, fellow producers who shared the same passion. They teamed up for an EP on Miami’s own Mr. Nice Guy Records in late 2015 and recently released on IAHG in 2016, and there's plenty more to come for this dream team!

When we sat down with the guys, we asked how this mix represent them as artists, to which Ralo said “It represents the sound we love to create and share with everyone at our shows.”
Strada went on to explain how they choose the tracks for this mix, “We hand-selected these tracks by reaching out to fellow producers for their unreleased music and chose a few tracks that hold a special place in our hearts. We are very eager to share them with all you gangsters... The special thing about this mix is that we get to express our sound, our hard work and dedication that we have been striving for since we started working together two years ago.”
