It's Not My Retina
iCantCU Podcast
07/15/21 • 51 min
In this episode of the iCantCU Podcast, I talk about watching the Wimbledon Men's Finals and Euro 2020 and what I missed seeing in each. I also talk about my visit to my retina specialist, Dr. Garg.
Show notes at https://www.iCantCU.com/134
I love watching sports and soccer is one of my favorites. I watch the English Premier League games all season long, and even some Bundesliga matches. My favorites are the soccer tournaments like Champions League, Euro, and the World Cup. There are the best of the best players involved in those games.
With Euro 2020 and the Men's Final at Wimbledon on the same day, I knew it was going to be a good day of sports on TV. I hadn't watched tennis in a while, so watching that I realized that I was missing a lot. It made me wonder if the major tournaments were also available on the radio. There, it would be easier for me to follow.
Soccer, on the other hand, was something I watch often. The one big difference is Premier League games don't end with penalties like Euro or the World Cup does. Watching the penalties by England and Italy, I had to wait for Eliz, the game announcers, or crowd reaction to know the result of most of the shots.
Between having trouble with the sports and some other issues I've been having, I was looking forward to my visit to Dr. Garg, my retina specialist. I've been worried that maybe I was having some sort of problem with it, as I had back in 2017 when it detached. Spoiler alert, it's not my retina.
Dr. Garg told me things looked good and that he was the least important of all my eye specialists. He told me the specialist I should see on a regular basis is Dr. Pro, my glaucoma specialist. When the eye is damaged from glaucoma, it can't be fixed.
I'll let you know in a couple of weeks how I made out.

A Travel Adventure to #nfb23 in Houston
iCantCU Podcast
07/11/23 • 65 min
In this travelogue episode of iCantCU, I talk about my travel experience to and from #nfb23 in Houston, Texas. There are always accessibility issues; they started when I got to PHL. If I could, I would have only traveled with a carry-on bag. When I arrived at IAH, I had to rely on someone to help me get out of the airport and into a taxi. Coming home, my departure gate changed three times! It was easier than flight 209 from Airplane: https://youtu.be/o1fAA378ePY.
If you are blind or visually impaired and worried about traveling alone like I did, do it! Other travelers will help if you ask (and sometimes even if you don't.) Airport staff, airline staff, and even the TSA will help you. Now, if they would only make the check-in kiosks accessible...

Our Own Little Snoop Dog
iCantCU Podcast
02/18/21 • 34 min
In this episode of the iCantCU Podcast, I talk about what we thought was a medical issue with our puppy Ziggy. It turns out it will be a story we laugh about for a long time. I also talk about another way I thought my family could obtain EU passports. The short answer is: we can't. Show notes at https://www.iCantCU.com/113
Coming And Going To An Event Is The Adventure
iCantCU Podcast
07/29/21 • 57 min
In this episode of the iCantCU Podcast, I talk about going to a Philly Meetup for the Blind event in Center City Philadelphia and the "adventure" it was getting to and from it. I also give an update about my latest eye issue and what I found out from my glaucoma specialist appointment. There is also a Ziggy update. Show notes at https://www.iCantCU.com/136
Getting There Is Half The Adventure
I went to a blind meetup after a couple of friends told me they would also be going and one of them would be up to traveling together part of the way. I was so glad I went. As usual, getting to and from the event was an adventure in itself.
It was more of an adventure coming home than on the way there, though there were a few issues going. Coming home I nearly wiped out on vomit on the sidewalk (though I didn't know what it was as I was sliding all over the place trying to stay on my feet.) We encountered locked gates at several station entrances and hallways that we typically use to get to the trolly. And, the scariest one, nearly getting hit by a guy on a bicycle.
Eye Update
My appointment with the glaucoma specialist went better than I expected. I was given an eye drop to use on my cornea edema. Once I go to the cornea specialist in a few weeks to confirm that is all that is going on I will feel better.
The Problem With Society
When Eliz was walking Ziggy one morning, a lady walking a dog on the sidewalk ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE STREET yelled at her for not stopping until she and her dog were behind a parked car so her dog couldn't see Ziggy. She didn't want her dog barking and going nuts while seeing our handsome boy. Why is she entitled to such treatment.
Her dog barked and barked while Eliz kept walking. Her dog stopped barking once they were behind the parked car. It is one thing if they were on the same side of the street, but they were not.

The Home Depot Doesn't Sell White Canes
iCantCU Podcast
07/22/21 • 47 min
In this episode of the iCantCU Podcast, I talk about a transaction at The Home Depot. Who knew they sold white canes there? They don't. I also talk about editing the latest episode of White Canes Connect. Show notes at https://www.iCantCU.com/135
What Doesn't The Home Depot Sell
The Home Depot sells a whole bunch of things, but not white canes. That's why I thought the cashier was joking when she said, "Is that yours or did you get that here?" It wasn't until after we were out of the store that Eliz told me the cashier was being serious.
White Canes Connect Episode 2
Episode 2 of White Canes Connect is now complete. We had so much content, we broke it into two parts. Editing it was a nightmare from the start. None of the audio tracks were synced up with one another. In the end, though, I think it sounds good. Listen to White Canes Connect episode 2 and let me know what you think.
Brand Loyalty
I've had an American Express card since 1986. We have been incredibly loyal to the brand. It is our card of choice for over 35 years. Turns out, they don't seem to be as loyal to us and it all stems from a defective product from BJs Wholesale Club.

Karaoke Survival for Non-Singers
iCantCU Podcast
02/20/24 • 38 min
In this episode of iCantCU, I explore everything from unique fundraising efforts to the power of community meetings and the challenges blind parents face.
I begin with an exciting opportunity to support the NFB of Pennsylvania through a raffle with fantastic rewards. It's a simple way to contribute and stand a chance to win, with proceeds going directly to a great cause.
I also discuss the ongoing challenge of encouraging in-person attendance at our Keystone chapter meetings since the pandemic. Despite the convenience of Zoom, there's a unique value in face-to-face interactions that we're striving to rekindle.
Bringing donuts and coffee to meetings has become our strategy to boost in-person attendance. It's a small gesture that will strengthen our community bonds.
Our conversation shifts to supporting blind parents, spotlighting Stacie's initiative to launch a nonprofit. This effort aims to address the unique challenges blind parents face, from societal prejudices to practical hurdles in child-rearing.
Travel plays a significant role in my life, and I share my upcoming trips, mainly related to my work with the NFB. From leadership seminars to state conventions, these journeys are not just about the destinations but the people and experiences along the way.
Your support and engagement mean the world to me, and I hope this episode has inspired you. Remember, whether participating in a raffle, attending a meeting, or supporting a cause, your involvement makes a difference in the blind community.

Advocacy Brews – Taking on Starbucks' App Flaws
iCantCU Podcast
01/18/24 • 38 min
In this episode of iCantCU, I explain some problems with another app. Starbucks, I'm talking to you. How is a blind or visually impaired person supposed to place an order for a store that is now a mobile order pick-up-only location if the app isn't accessible? On the bright side, I now have an app to use as a demonstration when we meet our Representatives and US Senators during the NFB's Washington Seminar.
I also discuss what is going on with Ziggy. He's had an issue since late September and recently had more tests. It may be food allergies. The Golden Menace has become a money pit, but we'll do whatever we can to improve our pooch.
