The one thing which really stands out about Augustine is that he wasn’t always the saint we know today. In fact, he was probably closer to our modern day Wolf of Wall Street type of character - he was super ambitious and successful. He had fame, fortune, and power. He partied a lot and indulged himself in the world, especially with lust. And yet through it all he had a restlessness in his heart - he knew something was missing, but he just couldn’t put a finger on it until later in life. Let’s see how he became the Christian giant we know today.
"Christian biography combines all sorts of things we need but have so little time to pursue. It is history and guards us against chronological snobbery. It is also theology because it comes from the lives of people like us. It is also adventure and suspense, for which we have a natural hunger. It is psychology and personal experience, which deepen our understanding of human nature. Good biographies of great Christians make for remarkably efficient reading." - John Piper on Desiring God

#2 - Hudson Taylor (1832 - 1905)

Hudson Taylor is considered one of the most influential figures in Christian missions. He really revolutionized how missionaries should share the gospel in foreign countries, especially where cultures are so different than their own. His life is well documented across multiple biographies - I read the one by Gregg Lewis called Hudson Taylor’s Spiritual Secret and was just floored by his example of putting his faith into action. Let's see how Hudson Taylor become the Christian we know today.
