How To Be Queer!

How To Be Queer!

Alex Vaughan and Kim Salvaggio

Ever wonder what happened to the kids in the 90’s that could never get out of the closet...maybe trapped in there with old field hockey sticks and uniforms? Stories of flannels and baby white tank tops? Maybe a few “oops, I swear I was just tipsy stories..." It’s mid-life and you finally get the courage to say the words...yep, I’m queer... now what?! Welcome to a podcast about midlife and FINALLY out of the closet! Meet Alex, a human who finally got the words, non binary and transgender, at 40 years old and Kim, at 42 was finally able to say, I'm here and I'm queer.

Kim and Alex get the privilege to have a conversation with Jeremy and Jo Ivester. Book description: "Jeremy Ivester is a transgender man. Thirty years ago, his parents welcomed him into the world as what they thought was their daughter. As a child, he preferred the toys and games our society views as masculine. He kept his hair short and wore boys’ clothing. They called him a tomboy. That’s what he called himself. By high school, when he showed no interest in flirting, his parents thought he might be lesbian. At twenty, he wondered if he was asexual. At twenty-three, he surgically removed his breasts. A year later, he began taking the hormones that would lower his voice and give him a beard―and he announced his new name and pronouns. Once a Girl, Always a Boy is Jeremy’s journey from childhood through coming out as transgender and eventually emerging as an advocate for the transgender community. This is not only Jeremy’s story but also that of his family, told from multiple perspectives―those of the siblings who struggled to understand the brother they once saw as a sister, and of the parents who ultimately joined him in the battle against discrimination. This is a story of acceptance in a world not quite ready to accept."

How To Be Queer! - Come Out with OUT FRONT Magazine
play

07/15/22 • 91 min

Kim and Alex get the chance to sit down with Out Front Magazine's Maggie Phillips and Addison Herron-Wheeler. They share their incredible stories about discovering their queerness. They share their truths and the nitty gritty about what love and authenticity is for them. Grab a cup of love, or put on your walking shoes and spend time with us.

After six years directing OFM operations, Maggie Phillips obtained co-ownership along with her fearless business partner, Addison. Maggie took over as CEO (we learn means Chief Everything Officer!) and co-publisher to carry on the 45-year legacy that Phil Price founded, and continues to amplify queer voices. Maggie considers hiking to be the best therapy and intends to conquer as many mountains as possible until her legs can no longer carry her up. Addison Herron-Wheeler is OFM’s co-owner, co-publisher, and editor-in-chief, and friend to dogs everywhere. She enjoys long walks in the darkness away from any sources of sunlight, rainy days, and painfully dry comedy. She also covers cannabis and heavy metal, and is author of Wicked Woman: Women in Metal from the 1960s to Now, and Respirator, a short story collection.

Kim and Alex have the pleasure of speaking with Melissa Giberson, author of Late Bloomer: Finding My Authentic Self at Midlife (Releasing on August 8, available for pre-order through Amazon!) ORDER NOW!!!!

Melissa Giberson is a middle-aged suburban wife and mother of two kids, solidly planted in the life she’s always wanted. Yet she longs for something more—something she can’t quite put her finger on until, one day at the Y, she finds herself mesmerized by the sight of a naked woman and asks herself for the first time: Am I gay?

This revelation sends Melissa on a head-spinning journey of self-discovery, one that challenges everything she thinks she knows about herself, forces her to decide exactly how much she’s willing to risk for authenticity, and shakes the foundations of the family she’s fiercely determined to shield from the kinds of wounds she sustained during her own childhood. Torn between her desire to be true to herself and her desire to protect her children, she is consumed by fear and conflicting emotions—and when her husband unexpectedly serves her divorce papers, her confusion only deepens.

Adrift in uncharted waters, Melissa finds fragments of understanding and peace in unexpected places—in a conference room in Israel, a small fishing village in Cape Cod, and at a yoga retreat center—that help her deconstruct her preconceptions about faith and identity and begin to construct a new framework for her life. Over the course of her ten-year journey, she finds hope, love, and more courage than she ever knew she was capable of, and she gradually assembles the puzzle that is her—the real her.

Tune in to the interview and join the fun. Find Melissa Giberson at www.melissagiberson.com
