How Not To Think

How Not To Think

Howard Rankin

"People aren't logical, they're psychological with the emphasis on the psycho," writes Dr Howard Rankin. An expert in cognitive neuroscience, Howard recently published his book I Think Therefore I Am Wrong which looks at the many ways we can sabotage our thinking through cognitive biases, binary thinking, false assumptions and numerous other strategies. The How Not To think podcast examines how this false reasoning manifests itself in many areas of society through myths, and 'conventional wisdom.' Howard speaks with leaders in their fields to examine the impact of faulty thinking that occurs in every sphere of life.

Kathryn Sollmann is the author of Ambition Redefined: Why the Corner Office Doesn’t Work for Every Woman & What to Do Instead (2019). She commissioned a new survey during the ‘stay at home’ orders entitled “WOMEN IN 2020: Choosing to Move Up the Ladder—Or Not?” It reveals that few women at the mid-level—the pipeline for senior leaders—currently have these career aspirations in the C-Suite.

The majority of women in the 35 to 44 age demographic, say they have reached their career goals and do not intend to advance further. Though these women are committed to their careers (even after the Covid-19 crisis that has been a stressful convergence of work and family), they admit that higher titles and compensation are secondary to having the personal bandwidth to care for family and overall work-life balance.

Survey data also emphasizes that upper-level management women (not yet in the C-Suite) and women in the 45 to 55 age demographic also largely say that they have reached their career goals. Though these women who are closer to C-Suite or other top management posts would seem to be well-positioned for further advancement, they also say that they don’t want to increase the hours they devote to work or invite more stress.

Joseph Pearce is a prolific writer, having published more than twenty books on spiritual topics surrounding major historical figures such as Shakespeare, C.S. Lewis, G.K. Chesterton and Alexander Solzhenitsyn. As a young teen in Britain, Joseph was drawn into the fascist group the National Front and by 16 was editing and writing materials for them. He was imprisoned twice for inciting hatred, and on the second time, realizing his activities really didn't reflect his ideals, changed direction. Inspired initially by the writings of G.K. Chesterton, Joseph converted to Catholicism and has been a leading writer and thinker on Catholic and spiritual issues ever since.

The conventional treatment goals for people with trauma, anxiety and depression are to provide medications to minimize symptoms and coping strategies to reduce the impact of potentially crippling conditions. But what if this approach not only doesn't help but is actually the complete opposite of what needs to be done to restore normalcy??
Dr Bob Moore is a vastly experienced therapist and educator in the areas of trauma and in this episode he explains how to actually cure anxiety and trauma rather than simply mollify it. Using an understanding of learning and neurology Dr. Bob explains how trauma and anxiety can be effectively treated and removed for good.

How Not To Think - How to Think About....achieving inclusivity
play

02/14/21 • 47 min

In our divided climate with heightened concerns and emotions over inclusion, racism, and activism, THE ESSENTIAL DIVERSITY MINDSET: How to Cultivate a More Inclusive Culture and Environment (Career Press, 3/1/21) offers a transformative approach to diversity―as a mindset, not as a formula.

“It is thoughts, feelings, and behaviors—not enforcements, compliances, or statistics—that drive diversity outcomes,” asserts author Soo Bong Peer, a diversity strategy consultant and executive coach to multinational corporations who helps organizations build authentic paths to diversity.

“Diversity is a mindset: it can’t be forced; it comes from within. By changing the way differences are viewed and accepted, we can change the way we look at diversity.”

Peer was raised in a South Korean military, political, and diplomatic family. She grew up in South Korea, Mexico, the UK, Japan and the U.S. With more than 30 years of experience in strategic marketing, global branding, business development, international joint ventures, and leadership development, Peer’s hands-on career combined with personal background brings a unique perspective to today’s struggles.

THE ESSENTIAL DIVERSITY MINDSET intertwines Peer’s personal story with answers to businesses, organizations, and people searching for alternate perspectives and strategies to advance diversity and inclusion. It will inspire readers to pause and reflect on where they are and explore how we all can make positive shifts to thrive in unity with differences. Topics covered include:

· Diversity is a mindset, not a formula

· Racial labeling divides people and promotes racial stereotyping

· Human connection is the foundation of healthy diversity

· Self-empowerment and personal change forward diversity

· Leadership action is imperative to advance unifying diversity in changing times
