Get Ready to Laugh: "The Laff Box" [Short Story]
Horror Humor Hunger
02/06/24 • 18 min
We’re kicking things off with my short story “The Laff Box,” which you can also read here: https://vmp22.medium.com/the-laff-box-7bafde9f9008?sk=0598af7d7231964db1d80ad0e8b4fa04
This story is a (hopefully obviously) fictionalized retelling of the real-life Charley Douglass and his Laff Box. Enjoy!

Hungry Yet? Try This Carnival Cake!
Horror Humor Hunger
06/25/24 • 13 min
Are you hungry? It’s time to feed you! Recipe creator extraordinaire Becky Parr created this Carnival Cake, inspired by my novel A COLD NIGHT FOR ALLIGATORS! It’s set in an abandoned theme park, so the ingredients reflect all the flavors of carnival goodies. Enjoy!
INGREDIENTS
Cake
1 box french vanilla cake mix (I like Duncan Hines)
1 5.25 oz package instant vanilla pudding
1 cup sour cream
1 cup vegetable oil
4 eggs beaten
1/2 cup warm water
Caramel Buttercream Frosting
2 cups brown sugar, packed
1 cup unsalted butter, cubed
1/2 cup vanilla almond milk
Pinch of salt
5 cups powdered sugar, sifted
2-3 Tbsp heavy cream
Topping
2 cups chopped peanuts
1 bag of caramel corn
1 cup of chocolate chips, melted
DIRECTIONS
- Cake: Preheat oven to 350. Butter two 9” cake pans and line the bottoms with parchment paper. Beat all 6 ingredients together until well blended. Divide the batter evenly into the two cake pans. Bake for 25-28 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool cakes completely.
- Frosting: Combine brown sugar, butter, and milk in a heavy saucepan and cook and stir semi-frequently over low heat. Once butter is completely melted, stir constantly for 1 minute. Set to medium heat and cook without stirring for 3-6 minutes, or until bubbles form across the entire caramel surface and the caramel turns a rich amber color. Pour caramel into a heatproof large glass bowl and let cool. Once cool, add powdered sugar and beat until it comes together. I added a bit more almond milk plus heavy cream to get the right silky frosting texture.
- Assembly: Place one layer of cake on a plate and cover with caramel frosting. Sprinkle the frosted top with chopped peanuts. Add the top layer of cake. Frost the top and sides with the caramel frosting. Cover the sides of the cake with chopped peanuts. Cover the top with caramel corn. Drizzle the melted chocolate over the caramel corn.
- Best enjoyed while reading A COLD NIGHT FOR ALLIGATORS!

Jaws and Jokes: The Wild World of Alligators with Naturalist Shannon Matzke
Horror Humor Hunger
05/14/24 • 43 min
Let’s face it--most of us don’t know that much about alligators, and what we think we know (run in a zigzag because alligators are aggressive) is a myth. In this episode, we’re going to do some myth-busting with expert naturalist Shannon Matzke. Trust me, you won’t want to miss this!

Horror as Junk Food: How Much Is Too Much?
Horror Humor Hunger
05/30/23 • 38 min
What makes a work of literature ‘great?' Why are some books upheld as paragons of cultural and social critique while others are dismissed as ‘junk food’? Why is horror so often relegated to the junk food category?
In this episode, special guest and horror author Z.C. Krol helps us answer these questions and many others. We explore the concept of splatterpunk, how much is too much in horror, and the importance of horror as a genre to society at large.
You can find Z.C. Krol’s novella, Disseverment, on Amazon at https://www.amazon.com.au/Disseverment-Horror-Story-Z-C-Krol/dp/B0BBD7L316
You can follow him on Instagram @zc_krol and listen to his podcast, The Creepy Kroly, on Spotify.

The Wiggly, Wobbly, Weird World of Jelly with Sam Bompas of Bompas & Parr
Horror Humor Hunger
06/06/23 • 40 min
“Jelly is so close to human flesh. That is why it’s delightful for us, because it’s made out of gelatin. It starts off quivering, then there’s a sort of lustrous motion as it dissolves in the mouth. There’s something rather fleshy about it, which I think is wonderful.” --Sam Bompas
Jelly, with its creepy, wobbly, wiggly appearance, inspired me to write my newest novel, It Must Be Jelly, about a killer jelly mold. In the course of my research, I found Bompas & Parr, a London-based design firm specializing in incredible jellies. In this episode, Sam Bompas of Bompas & Parr talks with me about the horror and humor of jelly and why it captivates our attention so fully.
You can follow Bompas & Parr on Instagram @bompasandparr, order their book, Jelly, on Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/Jelly-Bompas-Parr-glorious-spectacular/dp/1862058792), visit their website (https://bompasandparr.com/ ), watch them make a jelly (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IwhkA4gdffE ), or read more about them and their work (https://www.ft.com/content/3b83cb0a-bf43-4eae-ba8e-61cf50b6f93b ).
If you’re interested in the article I first read that inspired me, you can find it here at Atlas Obscura: https://www.atlasobscura.com/articles/gelatin-art
As for the recipe, I tried this one (https://www.thespruceeats.com/strawberry-jelly-recipe-435894 ), but substituted frozen, thawed mixed berries for the fresh strawberries.
As Sam says, “Our challenge to listeners: What would you do with jelly? Where will it take your imagination?”
