In this episode, I speak with serial entrepreneur Angela Salamanca about her journey of starting businesses as an immigrant. Learn how Angela turned her labor of love into a legacy of inclusion with ventures like Gallo Pelon, Centro, and Ex-Voto. Discover how necessity drives creativity, leading many immigrants to entrepreneurship out of a need for financial stability. Angela emphasizes the importance of inclusivity, community building, and shared experiences as key values for creating her legacy. Creating spaces where everyone feels safe and welcomed is crucial for people to be their best selves. From her restaurants to her annual 5K run on Dia de los Muertos, she shares how intimacy plays a role in community building. I was shocked to learn that with her experience as a restaurateur, she still is having trouble securing a business loan (SBA loans seem particularly difficult). From running to cooking, this conversation covers a lot of vulnerable topics. I hope you enjoy this wild ride!

In this insightful episode of Honey and Hustle, I had the pleasure of speaking with Ed Ross, the founder of Core AI. Our conversation delved into the nuances of authentic leadership and the transformative power of effective communication in the workplace. Ed emphasized that time does not equate to experience or expertise, and that individuals should be encouraged to lead in areas where they excel.

We explored the importance of storytelling in presentations and how it can make information more memorable and engaging. Ed provided valuable insights into how every conversation, whether it's with a large audience or a one-on-one interaction, counts towards building relationships and influencing others.

A particularly touching story was shared about Ed's mentor, Connie, who played a pivotal role as a sponsor in his career by providing support and opportunities for growth. This story highlighted the difference between a manager, a mentor, and a sponsor, and the profound impact a sponsor can have on an individual's professional journey.

We also touched on the challenges faced by Black founders in raising capital and how Ed has navigated this landscape with the support of angel investors and strategic partnerships. The episode concluded with a rapid-fire Q&A session, where Ed shared his indispensable business tool, his alternative career choice (which is none, as he loves what he does), and a description of his brand, which is all about authenticity and helping others.

Accepting that debt could benefit his business is a financial mindset shift that Chi Yiu made during his journey in entrepreneurship. Being afraid of failure and not wanting to be in a position to be fired from a job are powerful motivators to exploring different approaches to making your business successful.

Chi founded Wood + Water Studio in 2018 and has since become a champion of affordable housing solutions that meet the present-day needs of the Triangle community. A former East Carolina University student turned kitchen and bath remodeling company owner, Chi has created a business from his passion, rather than running from it (as he did for quite some time).

Our conversation revealed his love for mentorship, relationship development, design, and lifelong learning. I can’t wait for you to learn why he started his business, the challenges he overcame in managing a team, and what’s next on the horizon for Wood + Water.
