Welcome aboard the back-to-school express! As we embark on this exciting journey, I'm joined by the talented educator and speaker, Erin Tarr, to lend us a compass and a flashlight, guiding us to a successful school year. With us, your family is in safe and knowledgeable hands, all set to navigate the school year.
We kick off our journey by laying the platform of healthy sleep habits. It's the fuel that keeps the engine of our kids' growth running smoothly. Erin enlightens us on the importance of good sleep, from blackout curtains to white noise, and how a consistent sleep schedule can be a game changer for our kids. Transitioning to our next stop, we put on our explorer hats and journey through the landscape of digital resources available to our young scholars. With apps like PhotoMath, Canvas Parent, Khan Academy, and Duolingo, homework and organization become less daunting tasks and more of exciting quests.
Moving forward, we handle the tough terrains of bullying, and provide tools to help you spot the signs and empower your children with empathy. We further delve into the art of setting boundaries, and the balance of support and effective communication with teachers. Keeping kids motivated is imperative; buckle up as we unravel the magic of different incentives and how communication helps decode what works best. As we approach the end of our journey, Erin and I focus on the unsung heroes of our kid's lives—their teachers. We discuss simple ways to show gratitude and appreciation to these extraordinary individuals. Finally, we welcome listeners once again to join our sponsorship challenge for kids in Haiti.
So, come along for this knowledge-packed journey, fill your backpacks with tips and tricks, and let's make this school year a resounding success!

You may have a bright idea for a new business, but before you invest money in your great idea, do your research. We'll begin with how to perform a SWOT analysis and from there cover the following:
- Naming your business
- Picking the right entity
- Seting up all your financial accounts
- Securing your website and social media handles
- Obtaining necessary permits, licenses and insurance
- Creating contracts for services
- Setting up your promotional measures
- And so much more!
Keep in mind that it is always suggested you contact business professionals such as lawyers, tax advisors, and city offices for your state's policies when starting your own business.

Holly's Highlights - Giving Tuesday with Huntsman Cancer Institute Foundation
play

12/01/20 • 26 min

Send us a text

Today is #Giving Tuesday (which happens to follow the frenzy of Black Friday and Cyber Monday each year). Giving Tuesday was created back in 2012 to help "unite countries around the world by sharing our capacity to care for and empower one another."
According to Neon CRM, the winter months are reported to be the best fundraising months. November accounts for 46% of annual giving and December 30% of annual giving. However, with tax returns coming up, this Spring can also be a good time to fundraise as people have cold, hard cash in hand and can often be more likely to give to various causes.

If you take part in annual events such as 5 or 10ks, half-marathons, or other fundraising events for non-profits, chances are you are starting to look ahead and put those events on your calendar now. But when do you start promoting and raising funds for such events?

Well, today we have special guests, Jen Murano-Tucker, Director of Events, and Raegan Erickson, Event Coordinator, from Huntsman Cancer Foundation with us to speak to all things fundraising. From what should we look for in organizations to support, red flags that should alert you when choosing a non-profit to raise money for, to overcome some of the biggest fundraising challenges, and what counts as a charitable contribution write-off - we'll learn the ins and outs of fundraising from these foundation pros.

Now, listeners, I can tell you firsthand how fabulous Jen and Raegan are and what a solid, reputable organization both Huntsman Cancer Institute and the foundation are to work with. My father was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma five years ago and my mother with Glioblastoma brain cancer last year. Both of my parents have received treatment from Huntsman and the care that is received there is just top-notch. Each time our family has walked into Huntsman (which has been A LOT) we have truly counted our blessings that my parents have been able to receive their treatments there. Huntsman Cancer Foundation holds an annual Sports Festival each year for walkers, runners and cyclists to take part in raising funds to help find a cure for cancer - if you are looking for an organization to get involved with I would personally invite you to join the cause through that Sports Festival. You can take part in any state and HCI makes it so simple to collect donations and apply them to your fundraising account.
Don't want to raise money, but just want to find a worthy cause to donate your hard-earned money to all while knowing you make a positive impact through your giving? Whether to Huntsman or the American Heart Association, Food Banks, or other passion of yours - what better day than on this Giving Tuesday.

The holidays are upon us - and let’s face it we all have our favorites. I have a coworker who lives for Halloween, friends who get excited for Friendsgiving, their take on the Thanksgiving holiday, and what child doesn’t look forward to Christmas?
However, did you know that with the holidays comes an increase in injuries, residential fires, and even domestic violence? According to the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission, cooking fires remain the #1 cause of residential fires with most of those occurring on Thanksgiving Day; they also report 160 decorating-related injuries EACH DAY during the holiday season most involving falls; and according to BestLife, online fraud attempts spike approx 14% between Thanksgiving Day and Cyber Monday alone.

So, how can we prepare for a safe holiday season this year? Well we have TWO experts with us today: Judy Echavez, Public Affairs Specialist and Communications Coordinator for the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission; and Officer Amy Bryant, Crime Prevention and Community Relations Specialist with the Sandy City Police Department in Utah.
Today on Holly's Highlights podcast these experts will give us tips on being safe this holiday season including:
- preparing our car for road trips
- protecting our car from burglaries and theft
- preventions for our home from trees to holiday lights
- home invasion and burglary protection
- Halloween safety from costumes and allergic reactions, to pedestrians and motorists
- Thanksgiving cautions for turkey fryers, all that Black Friday shopping and domestic abuse increases
- Christmas tips for age appropriate toys, disposing of all that trash that reveals what you have inside your home, and even helping kids know who to and not to go to if lost while out and about
