Elizabeth’s long reign was one of the most brilliant in English history. Referred to as The Golden Age, it is remembered for the defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588, the execution of Mary, Queen of Scots the year before, and for many important voyages of exploration and discovery to North America. The Plymouth Company established the Popham Colony, in present-day Maine, the northern answer to the previously discussed Jamestown Colony, founded by the Virginia Company of London.
