Historical Quarrels - Emperor Nero

Emperor Nero

09/04/23 • 113 min

On the sultry evening of July 18, 64 AD, Emperor Nero watched from the safety of his palace as Rome was swallowed by an inferno. The city's cries were drowned out by the roaring blaze, an almost apocalyptic spectacle that left much of Rome in ashes. Yet Nero, cloaked in opulence and hubris, saw opportunity amid the chaos.
Outside the city walls, a group of individuals huddled in whispered prayer, their eyes mirroring the flickering flames that had devoured their homes. They were Christians, a burgeoning sect considered blasphemous by the majority of Romans. As the last embers smoldered in the ruined city, Nero found in them the perfect scapegoats for the great fire that had raged for six devastating days and seven nights.
Among Nero's advisers was Tigellinus, a man known for his cunning and ambition. With whispered counsel, he assured the Emperor that blaming the Christians would divert the rising tide of public ire away from the imperial throne. Tigellinus orchestrated a grotesque tableau, in which the Christians were condemned to burn at the stake, their agonized screams serving as a nightmarish choir in Nero's orchestrated drama.
As the first Christians were bound to their pyres, the crowd's initial roars of approval slowly faded into a chilling silence. Realization dawned that they were witnessing not justice, but sanctioned horror. The flames ascended, mingling with the dying light of day, as the scapegoats bore the collective sins of a city and an Emperor.
At that moment, the lines between savior and tyrant, martyrdom and scapegoating, were irrevocably blurred. Was Nero a victim of circumstances beyond his control, or a callous manipulator, sacrificing lives for his own survival? Were the Christians innocent casualties in a grander scheme or the early bearers of a message destined to change the world?
Join us today on Historical Quarrels, where we'll explore these questions and more. In the words of the ancient historian Tacitus, "Truth is confirmed by inspection and delay; falsehood by haste and uncertainty." So, let us inspect the tales and truths behind Nero and his turbulent reign.

Historical Quarrels - The Dog of Montargis

Historical Quarrels

play

10/02/23 • 66 min

Marquer readied himself in the sand as the crowd began to chant FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT!!!! This make shift arena hastily scrambled together might very well be his grave. As the kings guard came in they equipped him with a weapon to defend himself against his opponent.
As his nerves steadied and his mind came into sharp focus he told himself “All I need to do is kill him and then I will have gotten away with it” Images flashed in his mind of a forest and the battered body of Aubrey and of his hands digging up a shallow grave to hide his horrific deed and then quickly the image of the one witness to his crime came sharply into his mind.
This trial by combat would be his only way to be free of all suspicion, all he needed to do was kill his witness here and he would walk away a free man.
His thoughts changed as the crowd roared but all of that noise began to fade as he heard his opponents growl from across the arena.
A primal fear erupted into Marquer and his hair began to stand up on its own as he heard his witness growl, thoughts of escape came quickly and he searched for an exit but alas the only way out was by finishing the job he had started in that forest.
Marquer had only a split second to respond once the battle commenced as his opponent rushed at him trying to grab at his neck, he dashed to the side barely avoiding a fatal blow but his opponent, with inhuman speed, rebounded back and caught Marquers neck with his teeth.
As the teeth sank in Marquer could feel the searing pain it was causing him and began screaming out as he could feel his own blood begin to drip down into his opponent’s maw until at last he screamed “ILL CONFESS! ILL CONFESS JUST GET THIS DAMNED DOG OFF OF ME!”
After Marquer screamed that; his opponent released his grip and went back to his new master and received the best belly rub of his life oh yes he did what a good boy he was!
Join us today on Historical Quarrels as I give you the full context to the murder of Aubrey de Montididier and his loyal greyhound who would avenge his masters murder in what has to be one of the craziest potentially true crime stories I have ever learned about. So pop a squat with your furry friends as we learn about this loyal dog’s Historical Quarrel!

Historical Quarrels - Astor Place Riots

Astor Place Riots

Historical Quarrels

play

07/31/23 • 82 min

On the evening of May 10, 1849, the renowned Shakespearean actor William Macready was backstage at the Astor Opera House in New York City. While rehearsing his lines for Macbeth, Macready was oblivious to the ominous gathering just outside. Those who congregated weren't eager fans, but discontented protestors, their voices resonating like an ill-omened chorus in the early evening air.
By 7:30pm, their rallying cry of “Shall Americans or English rule this city!” echoed through the streets, the fury and angst palpable. Not even the theatre walls could shut out this unwelcome soundtrack, compelling Macready to convert his dramatic soliloquy into an unanticipated pantomime.
Among the crowd was Ned Buntline, a vociferous supporter of American actor Edwin Forrest and a vehement opponent of Macready. Who did everything in his power to fuel the hatred and rivalry between Macready and Edwin Forrest. Buntline through this rivalry orchestrated a battalion of rioters, launching an onslaught on the theater with stones and even attempts at arson.
At 9:15pm, the curtain fell, but the riot raged on, escalating to a point where the authorities feared they had lost control of the city. Calling in the military, warnings were issued, battles ensued, and, ultimately, the dreaded order was given - shoot to kill. The defiant chants of the rioters morphed into screams and cries, echoing the terror of a night that claimed the lives of many, bystanders included.
And thus, the legend of Macbeth’s curse found fresh fuel for its ominous flame.
How did we get here? Why was Macready, a mere actor, the target of such hostility in America? Was the rivalry between Macready and Forrest just an isolated incident or a direct cause of the riot? Is there truth to the cursed tales of Macbeth, doomed to incite disaster? Will my audacious new adult video “Redhead takes whole banana down their throat” hit the million-view milestone?
Join us today on Historical Quarrels as we unravel these queries and more. So, in the immortal words of the Bard, “Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears!” as we delve into this tumultuous chapter in American history.

Historical Quarrels - Paraguayan War

Paraguayan War

Historical Quarrels

play

08/07/23 • 84 min

On the dawn of March 1, 1870, a pivotal figure of the Paraguayan War, President Francisco Solano López, stood at the edge of the dense jungle in Cerro Corá, Paraguay. His eyes scanning the horizon, he was all too aware of the bitter end that seemed to be fast approaching. From within the underbrush, the war cries of the Triple Alliance soldiers reverberated, their menacing echoes swirling around him like predatory birds circling their prey.
By 7:45am, their ferocious growls of "Down with López! For Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay!" sent shivers across the Paraguayan landscape, their vehemence striking fear in the hearts of the last remaining Paraguayan soldiers. The normally bustling sounds of Paraguayan camp life was replaced by an eerie silence, punctuated only by the involuntary gasps and shudders of men preparing for what could be their last battle.
Among them was Eliza Lynch, López's enigmatic mistress, her gaze a blend of worry and defiance. She played a crucial part in López's resilience, standing by him till the end, her spirit proving to be an unyielding force against the impending doom. It was as if her strength alone was enough to counteract the odds stacked high against Paraguay.
At 9:35am, the battle began, but López's hope of holding his ground seemed to falter with each passing minute. The overwhelming forces of the Triple Alliance, their resolve as unyielding as the morning sun, forced López's remaining troops into a corner, pushing them towards an inevitable conclusion.
The escalating cries for surrender from his weary men fell on deaf ears, López was resolute. His final stand, fueled by an unbreakable spirit, led to a violent clash that would mark the end of the bloodiest war in Latin America's history.
With his last breath, López reportedly shouted, "I die with my country!" His final utterance echoing into the jungle, marking the end of an era and the beginning of a long road of recovery for the battered nation.
So, how did we reach this poignant climax? What drove López to wage a war against such overwhelming odds? Is there more to López's stubborn resistance, or was it merely a manifestation of his egotistical nature?
Join us today on Historical Quarrels as we dissect these questions and delve deep into the compelling story of Francisco Solano López, the War of the Triple Alliance, and the remnants of a nation scarred by war. So, to borrow from the words of a renowned Spanish playwright, Lope de Vega, "escuchad, señores, escuchad", or "listen, sirs, listen", as we unravel this dramatic chapter of Paraguayan history.
