Hindsight - Hindsight - Season 2 Episode 2 - Ryan Vail
play

10/28/21 • 66 min

Ryan Vail blends the worlds of electronica, folk, and classical, always experimenting with combining classical instruments with unique methods of recording and composition.

“A minimalistic, electronic dream” -Nylon

“Vail Combines modern classical music and electronic sonics for a sound all of his own” – Stereogum

“Daring and emotionally affecting work and deserves your full attention” – The Independent

His most recent album ‘Borders’ was a collaborative project with Elma Orkestra which won the 2019 ‘Album Of The Year’ category at the Northern Irish Music Prize.

A symphony of electronic and analog components combine and enhance the live ‘Borders’ show beyond its natural boundary. Cinematic drone footage of the Irish border and countryside is accompanied by string players, classical composition, and vocal appearances from Moya Brennan and Stephen James Smith for a full-on assault of the senses which has taken them from deepest Mexico to the Berlin Wall.

Ryan has had radio play or performed live Sessions with BBC Introducing, Other Voices, Lauren Laverne, Steve Lamacq, Annie Mac, Tom Ravenscroft, Across The Line, Tom Robinson, Phillip Taggart, and Zane Lowe. Ryan has supported many international live acts such as Nils Frahm, Jamie XX, Jon Hopkins, Tycho, David Kitt, Todd Terje, Phil Kieran, Luke Vibert, and Orbital. Radio support includes BBC Radio 1, BBC 6 Music, KEXP & RTE to name a few.

Vera Lawlor started as a student in Trinity College Dublin last week but her journey to Trinity has been far from conventional. Always a keen student who loved reading, she was fifteen years old she was told on a Friday afternoon that she'd be leaving school to start working the following Monday.

Late in 2019, her dear sister and best friend died. Not long after that, Covid-19 hit. A few months after the first lockdown, she retired from her thirty-year career as a doctor’s receptionist at a busy practice in Finglas, Dublin, and is now charting a new course and throwing out any ideas of quiet retirement.

More than 50 years after she left school, this inspirational mother of two and grandmother to three is finally walking through Front Arch as a Trinity College student.

In our conversation, we talked about family, work, grief, and her lifelong love of learning, just a few days after she officially embarked on her new life as a college student.
