Tecumseh, Shawnee Chief and Warrior; Operation Cowboy: The WWII Lippizaner Horse Rescue
High Tales of History
11/19/21 • 105 min
Welcome to Episode 18!
In this week's episode, KT kicks it off with a story about Tecumseh, who was a Chief for the Shawnee tribe that fought against white expansion onto Indigenous lands in what is present day United States. A fierce warrior with both weapon and word, Tecumseh was celebrated as a leader who was able to bring tribes together for a common goal. Afterwards, Laurel has a story for all the horse girls (and other horse lovers) out there! During World War II, the Nazis had hoarded all the most precious horses from around Europe, chiefly the Lippizaner breed from Austria, in a breeding experiment to try to create the perfect horse. As the Third Reich crumbled and Soviet forces moved in, the horses were in danger of being killed and eaten. In an effort to save these horses, both Germans and Americans had to team up to save them in what was known as Operation Cowboy. *~*~*~*~*~*~ Mentioned in the Stories: The Spanish Riding School in Vienna Valegro's Farewell Dressage Performance *~*~*~*~*~*~ The Socials! Half-Baked Episode 1: Katherine Johnson
High Tales of History
02/11/22 • 12 min
Surprise! Welcome to our first ever Half Baked Episode, our version of a minisode! We wanted to get some extra history in this week because not only is it Black History Month, but the day of this episode's release, February 11th, is Women and Girls in Science Day. In this episode, Laurel talks about Katherine Johnson, who was one of the first Black women to work at NASA. She worked there for 33 years as a mathematician and was a master of very complex calculations that directly allowed for manned spacecrafts, the lunar landing and for the safe return of the Apollo 13 crew. Join Laurel in the smoke circle as we learn about the amazing Katherine Johnson!
What does "STEM" mean? STEM stands for science, technology, engineering and mathematics. It's a section of education and industry of which women only make up roughly 28%. It's far less when you get into individual fields, such as computer science in which women are only 19% of the workforce (source: American Association of University Women.) Jobs in these fields are some of the fastest growing and highest paid.
