Still with us after episode 10?! Gee, thanks!

In this episode, we are catching up on important events in September: Latinx Heritage Month and September 11th. First, Laurel talks about the life, love and art of Mexican icon Frida Kahlo. KT follows up with the tale of the brave individuals on United Flight 93 on September 11th, 2001.

**Content Warning** Both of our stories contain some very specific themes and content that might be triggering or upsetting to some listeners. The Frida Kahlo story discusses suicide, depression and frequent mentions of miscarriages and medical abortions. The United 93 story recounts the details of the September 11th attacks and hijacking of the flight. Listener discretion is advised.

High Tales of History - The Canadian Caper (Aka "Argo"); Hattori Hanzo, "The Demon"
play

09/03/21 • 64 min

The comfiest spot in the smoke circle goes to you, Friend! Come on in!

Welcome to episode 8 in which we recorded about 45 minutes of material before realizing only one of us was plugged in and a certain stoner was just testing HER levels and not BOTH. Soooo....anyway...

But we made it. And we're so glad you're here. In this episode, Laurel covers the story of what she always called "Operation: Argo" but is actually called The Canadian Caper which took place while all eyes were on the Iranian Hostage Crisis at the U.S. Embassy in 1979/1980. Afterwards, KT takes us back to feudal Japan with a name that might be familiar in both pop culture and samurai history: Hattori Honzo, also known as Demon Honzo for his ability to stalk adversaries as persistently and stealthily as a demon (and his ruthless nature!)

Welcome back!

We're one episode away from TEN! As usual, we've got a spot saved for you, however, this time KT insists that it will be her lap...

We start with Laurel's story about Thocmetony, later named Sarah Winnemucca, who was a Northern Paiute educator, author and advocate for her people. She lived a hard life walking between two worlds with critics on both sides. After leaving Western America in the 1800s, KT takes us north to Canada and then to England during World War I where we learn the heartwarming story of the real Winnie the bear, who inspired A.A. Milne's Winnie the Pooh series! The nostalgia FLOWS!

Episode 29 Folks! It's here! In it, the sisters sync their mind powers and both do their story on a rebel woman with a legacy in education. KT starts things off with the story of Belle Baruch, daughter of financier Bernard Baruch, who conserved a vast stretch of the American east coast and lived as an openly gay woman in the early 20th century. Next, Laurel tells the tale of Fatima Al-Fihri, who built the world's longest running university in the year 859 CE! Welcome in the Smoke Circle!

Hi there! We saved you a spot in the smoke circle! Puff, puff, pass y'all! Otherwise, KT has some "Cab Sav" for you if you're interested.

This week's episode covers a wide span of history starting with Laurel's story of more recent times about the Feather Heist of a scientifically and historically priceless collection of rare birds from the British Natural History Museum. It is WILD so buckle in for the ride. I mean, did you know there is basically a fly fishing underground?! What?

After our great heist adventure, KT takes us further back in the history books and tells us about the great Frederick Douglass, who inspired Black History Month. We also get to meet the amazing women in his life that helped him achieve all the great things he accomplished.

~~~~~~
This episode is a "remastering" and made for video version. Some editing has been done since its original release in July 2021. Apologies for some of the audio issues in this episode, it was from our very early recording days! :-) Thank you for your patience!
Welcome to episode 42! Laurel kicks things off with a story about a Black woman named Henrietta Lacks, who passed away from an unbelievably aggressive form of cervical cancer. Her legacy runs deep and wide as the same cells that took her life help science and medicine in life-saving and astonishing ways to this day. Unfortunately, as much as we have all been impacted by her legacy, there has been a decades long injustice that still continues to this day. Next, KT gives a nod to the late Queen Elizabeth II with a story of the lineage and centuries long history of the British Royal Family. Her story also loosely connects with her other story "How the Kingdom of England Began" from episode 34.
