HiddenTrack #225 DEVARROW (Graham Ereaux)
HiddenTracks
11/14/24 • 76 min
Graham Ereaux, who makes music under the alias, Devarrow, is a Canadian musician and producer celebrated for his songs reflecting on small-town joys, personal introspection, environmental and social concerns, and(on this new album)the unique love affair with his converted school bus turned music studio. Despite his seemingly bustling life in rural coastal Canada as a carpenter, surfer, and nature lover, his latest album, Heart Shaped Rock, defies any notion of musical complacency. Opening with the lines, “Every morning I just wake up and I just wash my face. Go downstairs and make some breakfast, coffee and some bacon and eggs,” there cord offers a refreshing take on life's simple pleasures, injecting vitality into a folk genre that can often lean towards melancholy. Devarrow's music is a heartfelt ode to rural life, drawing inspiration from his activities, interests and shared communal moments. Rooted in a deep appreciation for simplicity, he finds solace in stepping away from technology, relishing the quiet moments with morning coffee by his wood stove, and expressing his thoughts on a vintage typewriter. This record is a poignant exploration of the beauty found in life's simple pleasures, influenced by the wisdom of literary works such as "The Unsettling of America" and "The Encyclopedia of Country Living." Through Heart Shaped Rock, Devarrow enthusiastically embraces the mission to revitalize the folk genre, acknowledging his own troubled relationship with it. It is a captivating journey through love, loss, and self-discovery. The title track epitomizes the album's core theme, finding beauty in life's simplicity. Throughout the album, three songs feature toe-tapping whistling, while others incorporate tambourine, shaker, and an upbeat tempo, creating an atmosphere that feels light and airy amid the prevailing tones of folk music. Underneath its friendly and accessible folk-pop facade, Heart Shaped Rock retains moments of profound introspection. Personal stories unfold, from the poignant "Pictures" to the metaphorical love affair with solitude in “Bus Baby.” The album navigates emotions, from the abstract lyricism of “Falling Into Pieces” to the social commentary of “Help Me,” addressing climate and social collapse. At the core of Devarrow's music lies vulnerable lyrics, offering an unfiltered yet relatable glimpse into the life of a millennial navigating meaning in small-town Canada. Rather than shying away from the depth of folk music, Devarrow navigates it with respect and a desire to bring new perspective to the genre, along with a hope that we all somehow, get to a place where we collectively care less about things that don’t actually matter, while somehow caring more about things that do.

HiddenTrack #220 SAMMY KAY
HiddenTracks
10/10/24 • 78 min
New Jersey has a solid reputation for raising successful singer-songwriters, with Sam Krajkowski aka Sammy Kay as another proof. Ten years after his debut album Fourth Street Singers and five years after his most recent full-length civil/WAR, he goes back to basics with a new LP called July 1960. It concerns ten stripped down punk-folk songs with imaginative storytelling about the finer details of life (as the musician explains: “This is me navigating being in my mid-thirties, chasing some kinda hope, and trying to get my thoughts off my chest while understanding who I am”), with a sparse instrumentation of pianos, pedal steel guitars and strings, and always those amazing gravelly vocals. Impressive and irresistible.
July 1960, produced, engineered and mixed by James Duckworth, is out now digitally, on CD and vinyl LP, through Sell the Heart Records (US) and Engineer Records (UK). Featuring Sammy Kay (vocals, acoustic guitar), John Calvin Abney (pedal steel, electric guitar, piano, mellotron, harmonica), Cory Tramontelli (upright bass) and Collin Thompson (trombone).
PS Sammy Kay has much more to offer; earlier this year he released a nice debut EP with his new ska project The Kilograms, which also includes Joe Gittleman (The Mighty Mighty Bosstones), Mike McDermott (The Bouncing Souls) and J Duckworth (Newport Secret Six).

A truly international band composed of a Brit, a Frenchman, two Americans and two Canadians, The Wilderness formed in 2015.
The Wilderness is the lifelong dream of six rock n' roll devotees based in Kingston, ON. Together, they bring the piss and vinegar of young DIY road-dogs, the lyrical eloquence of Canada's folk heroes, and the musical grandeur of your dad’s favourite arena-rock band to any stage they can find. Think the belting poetry of Sam Fender, the lush vocal harmonies of Hozier, the driving guitars and soaring saxophones of Bruce Springsteen, and the effervescent choruses of Noah Kahan, held together by an unmistakable bond of brotherhood and a shared love of rock n' roll. A musical tapestry of truest Canadian fashion, the Wilderness sounds like nostalgia, feels like camaraderie, and looks a lot like a band you should watch out for.
Since 2015, The Wilderness have been earning their following by cutting their teeth over countless long nights and hundreds of thousands of kilometers. Their debut album, “Until Tomorrow” was produced by Rob Baker (the Tragically Hip) and charted on the NACC’s top 200 list for seven consecutive weeks. Their forth coming 2024 LP, “Strangers I Used to Love” was written in collaboration with JUNO panelist Steve Foley, Brett Emmons (the Glorious Sons), and Chris Koster (ex-the Glorious Sons) and sits poised to take the band to new heights and highways. With almost 600 independently booked shows across North America under their belt, and an independently released discography to their credit, the Wilderness are a formidable musical force and an unmistakably human band working hard to keep their dreams alive.

On this week's episode I had the pleasure to speak with Ean Hernandez from the Seattle based power punk collective THE SUBJUNCTIVES. Through my personal music journey a band popped up early in my life that I fell in love with, that band was called SICKO. Ean was an integral part of Sicko and a huge part of my musical life. Now I have another band later in life to fall in love with, The Subjunctives. Along with Hernandez on guitar and vocals, THE SUBJUNCTIVES include Wendell Howell on drums (also of Desolate Coast) and Jeff Mangalin (Four Lights) on bass. The sum of their parts has created a pop punk masterpiece with their latest album "Let's Try This Again." Ean and I talk about the formation of the band, his time away from music and what brought him back. Join Ean and I as we discuss things like "Smart Punks" at a "Bus Stop" while shouting "What's Up Fuckers?" as people pass by.

HiddenTrack #170 GO BETTY GO (Michelle Rangel)
HiddenTracks
10/26/23 • 86 min
For the past two decades, Go Betty Go have emphatically established themselves as one of punk rock’s most exciting forces. A gloriously rough-and-tumble sound with melodic aggression, they bring a rich and engaging energy, loaded with lush atmosphere and, at times, an underlying sense of foreboding.
Formed in 2000, in the suburbs of Glendale, California, they entered the LA scene when they were all teens. Go Betty Go is driven by Betty Cisneros’ big, roaring guitar, singer Nicolette Vilar’s soulful, siren call and the momentous urgency of Michelle Rangel’s bass and Aixa Vilar’s tumultuous drumming.
The Latina Punk Quartet swiftly ascended from local shows to a standing-room-only weeknight residency at Los Angeles dive Mr. T’s Bowl, to a national reputation via reams of critical acclaim and non-stop gigging.
Go Betty Go surged through several Warped tours, frequent cross-country tours, an attention-getting invasion of South by Southwest and seemingly had it made. With the release of 2005’s "Nothing is More", their first full-length album on Side One Dummy Records, they set out to tour yet again. They never finished it—Nicolette, exhausted, unhappy and burned out, suddenly quit. She walked away and the band's remaining members found themselves at a crossroads.
Miraculously and reunited, after a friend suggested a one-off 2012 gig, all four original members found themselves back together on stage. As if the band had a life of its own, Go Betty Go was back as suddenly as they had split years earlier.
After requests from fans and venues alike to play one last show together, the ladies of GBG gave in to what they thought was their final farewell show, but once they hit the stage, the chemistry that had once brought them together was restored and they were officially back. That renewal and excitement crackled through their last release “Reboot”, like a high-voltage jolt of electricity, reclaiming their rightful prominence as some of the brightest, boldest women in punk rock.
They continued to plow in full force, playing cross-country festivals and venues alike. But like the rest of the world, the band halted and canceled all touring in 2020 due to the pandemic. In 2022, Go Betty Go was hit yet again with their most difficult challenge to date. As the band prepared to enter the studio and record their next album, Betty was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer. The news was hard, but it brought them closer than ever.
They worked around Betty’s grueling doctor visits, chemotherapy, and surgeries, and when she was having her better days, they managed to squeeze out their latest studio recording “Black and Blue”. The name refers to the difficult and bruised circumstances that the band has dealt with. With the help and support of GBG fans and the music community alike, they all have helped support Betty with her GoFundMe page and through messages of love and support. The band sees no other road, but the one to recovery, as Betty continues her treatment towards being cancer-free. They are optimistically hopeful, supporting Betty as she works on beating her cancer.
Go Betty Go’s upcoming album “Black and Blue” will be out in early 2024 via LA-based indie label Wiretap Records.

HiddenTrack #169 PRESSING STRINGS (Jordan Sokel)
HiddenTracks
10/19/23 • 69 min
This week we welcome Jordan Sokel of PRESSING STRINGS. Pressings Strings lends credence to my feeling of never missing opening bands. I saw the band take an audience to a place they were not expecting to go, right to the merch table to purchase everything they could from the band. Pressing Strings first formed in 2006 while Sokel was still in college. The band officially debuted in 2008 with their album, Where We Are, and now has a deep catalog that includes the albums Episodes (2010), Pressing Strings (2012), Life of a Tree (2013), Owe the Source (2015), and Settle In (2020) as well as two EPs, Most of Us (2016) and Morning Takes (2021). As Pressing Strings built up their impressive live show and paid their dues gigging, their fame was spreading throughout the entire Eastern Seaboard, leading to headlining venues across Maryland and Washington, DC and frequent festival appearances at Peach Music Festival, Firefly, Sweetwater 420 Fest, Floydfest, and more. Over the last decade, Pressing Strings has also toured and opened for the likes of The Beach Boys, Gov’t Mule, Toad the Wet Sprocket, JJ Grey & Mofro, Rachael Yamagata, Neal Francis, The Toadies, Jerry Douglas, Sam Roberts Band, Michael Glabicki (Rusted Root), Rayland Baxter, and Junior Marvin of the Wailers. In addition to their touring success and amassing over 6 million streams, radio has also taken notice, with national AAA and public broadcasters across the U.S. eagerly embracing Pressing Strings and taking them to the top of their charts.

HiddenTrack #221 GRADUATION SPEECH (Pat Pie)
HiddenTracks
10/17/24 • 76 min
When guitarist/vocalist Kevin Day was seeking a quieter songwriting vehicle from the fuzzed-out pop-punk of his band Aspiga, he started Graduation Speech.
The New Jersey-based musician called on friends to add different instruments on 2021’s Maintenance Required EP, which found Graduation Speech's sound being fleshed-out and veering away from the singer-songwriter hushness of the earlier material.
Graduation Speech is Kevin Day along with guitarist Billy Bollinger (Crucial Dudes), bassist Brandon Iacometta (Crucial Dudes), and drummer Pat Pie.
