HiddenTracks - HiddenTrack #47 CALLIE McCULLOUGH
play

06/24/21 • 71 min

So I find myself back in "Music City", that's Nashville for those of you who may not know. I meet up with the sensational and ultra talented CALLIE McCULLOUGH . Callie and I discuss the meaning of community and how to find "your people." Callie's journey is unlike many I have heard before, from recording and touring with her mother to finding her own sound and spreading her wings to fly off alone. Callie hits hard with her infectious humility and captivating stories that kept me entertained the entire show. CALLIE McCULLOUGH'S music will be labeled as country by most, but I will label it as sincerity. Callie's vocal prowess can be best summed up with one word "SILKY". Callie carries me on her wings filled with wild "Feathers" and soars the highest heights to show me the true value of "Five Dollar Pearls." An immense amount of fun was had on this show, hope you have as much fun as I did.

play

08/19/21 • 92 min

This week I am excited to have Johnathon Ford of the imaginative post rock/ambient band UNWED SAILOR. Johnathon has had quite the alluring career when it comes to creating and building his “friendship” with music. Johnathon’s voyage through life has always been connected to music, from a child listening to classical music to the discovery of New Wave and Punk. Johnathon’s longing for community has provided him with an amazing trek throughout his career. Johnathon has been a part of great bands such as ROADSIDE MONUMENT and PEDRO THE LION. With those experiences he embarked on what would become UNWED SAILOR, the band that evokes undeniably sultry sounds to make peace to. “Take A Minute” or 90 of them, and join us in our search of “Truth or Consequences” as we stroll through the “Dark Of The Morning” and “Haze” of the “Indian Ocean.”

HiddenTracks - HiddenTrack #225 DEVARROW (Graham Ereaux)
play

11/14/24 • 76 min

Graham Ereaux, who makes music under the alias, Devarrow, is a Canadian musician and producer celebrated for his songs reflecting on small-town joys, personal introspection, environmental and social concerns, and(on this new album)the unique love affair with his converted school bus turned music studio. Despite his seemingly bustling life in rural coastal Canada as a carpenter, surfer, and nature lover, his latest album, Heart Shaped Rock, defies any notion of musical complacency. Opening with the lines, “Every morning I just wake up and I just wash my face. Go downstairs and make some breakfast, coffee and some bacon and eggs,” there cord offers a refreshing take on life's simple pleasures, injecting vitality into a folk genre that can often lean towards melancholy. Devarrow's music is a heartfelt ode to rural life, drawing inspiration from his activities, interests and shared communal moments. Rooted in a deep appreciation for simplicity, he finds solace in stepping away from technology, relishing the quiet moments with morning coffee by his wood stove, and expressing his thoughts on a vintage typewriter. This record is a poignant exploration of the beauty found in life's simple pleasures, influenced by the wisdom of literary works such as "The Unsettling of America" and "The Encyclopedia of Country Living." Through Heart Shaped Rock, Devarrow enthusiastically embraces the mission to revitalize the folk genre, acknowledging his own troubled relationship with it. It is a captivating journey through love, loss, and self-discovery. The title track epitomizes the album's core theme, finding beauty in life's simplicity. Throughout the album, three songs feature toe-tapping whistling, while others incorporate tambourine, shaker, and an upbeat tempo, creating an atmosphere that feels light and airy amid the prevailing tones of folk music. Underneath its friendly and accessible folk-pop facade, Heart Shaped Rock retains moments of profound introspection. Personal stories unfold, from the poignant "Pictures" to the metaphorical love affair with solitude in “Bus Baby.” The album navigates emotions, from the abstract lyricism of “Falling Into Pieces” to the social commentary of “Help Me,” addressing climate and social collapse. At the core of Devarrow's music lies vulnerable lyrics, offering an unfiltered yet relatable glimpse into the life of a millennial navigating meaning in small-town Canada. Rather than shying away from the depth of folk music, Devarrow navigates it with respect and a desire to bring new perspective to the genre, along with a hope that we all somehow, get to a place where we collectively care less about things that don’t actually matter, while somehow caring more about things that do.

This week we catch up with Nathan Dickerson and Bobby Paver of the scintillating indie rock band Motherfolk. The story of Motherfolk starts with stories of values and balance, then moves on in life broadening the horizons of the people who listen. Nate and Bobby have similar yet different stories to share with listeners. How do you book your first show? With a little white lie of course. With that little fib, Motherfolk was able to create a passionate following with their live performance. Throughout the touring life and sharing the stage with people, Nate learned a valuable lesson, “Not Everyone Gets Good.” Understanding that made them work harder and focus on what’s important, the art!!! Join Bobby, Nathan and I as we try to keep our “Head Above Water” as the “Anchor” seeks to pull us down while the “Sunlight” fades.

04/03/25 • 83 min

With members spread across Connecticut and Western Massachusetts, New England quintet Arms Like Roses play a blend of emo, indie rock, and post-hardcore that alternates between lush beauty and cathartic harshness just like the seasons do in the region they call home. With a sound harkening back to the ‘90s and early 2000s influenced by acts like Sunny Day Real Estate, mewithoutYou, Circa Survive, and Tigers Jaw, ALR made their debut in 2021 with the EP “Get Some Sleep”; they followed it up the next year with their Chris Teti (TWIABP)-produced first LP “Blooming”, which saw the band complete several east coast and Midwest tours and receive praise from press outlets like No Echo and The Alternative.

HiddenTracks - HiddenTrack #242 DRIFTWOOD CHOIR (Ed Prosek)
play

03/13/25 • 73 min

Indie duo Driftwood Choir, featuring Portair and Ed Prosek, are gearing up to release their debut self-titled album on March 7th and I'd love to have you check out the release! The duo and Nettwerk labelmates joined forces after bonding over a spirit of wanderlust, creating an uplifting album about change, and connecting with nature and people.

Driftwood Choir cements the musical union of two curious creative spirits, whose songwriting eloquence and acuity matches their clear proclivity for adventure. Born in California and based in Berlin, Ed instantly hit it off with the Australia-born Drew (aka Portair), bonding over a spirit of wanderlust both personally and sonically.

Two distinct paths brought Ed and Drew to Driftwood Choir. Ed had attracted a fervent fanbase with a series of solo EPs, including The Riverbed [2014], Truth [2016], Light as a Feather [2019], and The Foreigner [2023]. Hailing from the other side of the world, Drew built a devout audience under the name of Portair, captivating with The Light That Gives EP [2021], The Ice That Breaks EP [2022], and Learning How to Die EP [2023].

During the fall of 2023, the duo met in Berlin where they linked up for a drink and made a decision to hit the studio together. During their first proper session, the musicians cooked up “Constantinople.” It eventually amassed over half-a-million streams. Inspired by this newly unearthed working relationship, they kept going. Now, the pair is forging a path together emerging with their debut album out 2025.
