01/23/24 • 38 min
Episode 239: Order in the court! HRT80s Court is in session, and Joe and Kari object... to artists ripping off other artists. Of course, they try to be fair and hear both sides, so you can also decide if the audio evidence is enough to convict. This week's docket includes Kid Creole and the Coconuts v. Bananarama, and Ollie & Jerry v. Dan Hartman. There's a third case as well, but that's a secret!!
O' Canada: more songs from the CBC's list of the 50 Best Canadian Songs of the 80's, including a tune by Images in Vogue, and one that was perhaps made more famous by Mr. Eddie Vedder.
Episode 85: 1985
Hey! Remember the 80's?
11/03/20 • 43 min
Episode 85: Our celebration continues with all things 1985! First up is a look at the songs that landed at number 85 on the year end charts on Billboard and Cashbox -- a song that seems to follow Joe and Kari everywhere they go, and a song inspired by a Paul Newman movie. // 1985 was the year of Live Aid -- do you remember where you were when this global event aired? Bob Geldof used his pull to get everyone and their mother involved, for better or worse! One of the acts on stage was Simple Minds, who also made their Top 40 debut in 1985. If you are Alive and Kicking, tune in!!
Episode 106: Overrated
Hey! Remember the 80's?
04/20/21 • 53 min
Episode 106: Joe and Kari welcome a special guest to the show: Charlie of Charlie's 80's Attic! He recently had a program on the radio station counting down his Most Overrated Songs of the 1980's. Charlie was certain that Joe and Kari would have some issues with some of his picks, and although they agreed with the bulk of the choices, there were a few that need to be defended!! Listen to Joe, Kari and Charlie discuss why some of the biggest hits of the 1980's simply became too big over time.
Episode 124: Dare to Be Different
Hey! Remember the 80's?
08/24/21 • 38 min
Episode 124: Kari has a new show on Charlie's 80's Attic called Dare to Be Different. It is a show based on the music from iconic radio stations WLIR and KROQ (think new wave, punk, and non-mainstream). So in celebration of her new show we are taking a look at songs which fit into that format: songs from Robert Palmer (yes, THAT Robert Palmer), King, and Missing Persons.
Next, grab your boarding passes as it's time for Top of The Pops! This is the segment where your hosts take a look at number one hits from Across the Pond. Find out if Boris Gardiner and Yazz and the Plastic Population were as successful on the Billboard charts as they were in the UK.
Six Degrees of Diane Warren
Hey! Remember the 80's?
01/11/22 • 43 min
Episode 141: Everybody's gotta start somewhere, and in this episode of HRT80's, Joe and Kari are taking a look at some of the earlier songs from legendary songwriter Diane Warren. She has written some of the biggest hits of all-time, like "How Do I Live," "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now" and "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing," but in the 80's, she wrote some songs that DIDN'T top the charts. She wrote songs for Barbara Mandrell, Melissa Manchester, and Ronnie Spector, among others. Some of these are really good! And for others, the top spot on the Hot 100 was a real moonshot.
Sax Appeal
Hey! Remember the 80's?
01/25/22 • 47 min
Episode 143: Longest Sax Solos of the 80's, Part Two! The saxophone solo is a staple of your favorite 80's hits, time to check in on some doozies: Wang Chung and Go West are two synth-based acts, but they weren't afraid to dust of the sax when needed! The Stray Cats and The Rolling Stones show up as well.
Quiz Time: Kari recently took part of a trivia contest, time to see how Joe would've fared. Who will emerge victorious??
