When did we start having such a strained relationship with stuff? And can you actually have stuff without breaking the planet? That is exactly what we'll get into in this episode with circular economy entrepreneur and author Sandra Goldmark.

Thing's we'll ponder together:

  • When and why did we lose touch with the value of things?
  • How can we care for things and fix them when they're broken?
  • How should we think about stuff to make sure they only fill a functional, balanced, and nurturing part of our lives?
  • What is circular economy and how can we achieve it?

We'll also start the episode with what I call "Maddie Chats" where Madeleine is coming back to the show to give you quick "need-to-know" about microplastics, a teaser of an upcoming episode when we'll dive a lot deeper into that world...

About Sandra:

Sandra is a circular economy entrepreneur and author whose work focuses on solutions to overconsumption and climate change. In her recent book Fixation: How to Have Stuff Without Breaking the Planet, she takes readers on a quest to radically reimagine what a healthy relationship with our stuff might look like.

Hey Change Podcast - 50. The Climate Optimist Class #1 - The Art of Retruthing
play

04/13/20 • 41 min

Changing the narrative around climate change is imperative if we are to aim for a regenerative future. We can't continue to just pump fear and point fingers (let’s face it, we’ve all been wrong) and there's no point in piling evidence of our inevitable disaster unless we're given the clear directions of what to do.

Fear + uncertainty = anxiety + apathy. Which means a bunch of unhappy people unable to get to action. Reversing global warming is not just possible - it's our only option - and we need to start looking at it from excitement and understand that it is, in fact, the most exciting time ever to be alive!

I want to help shift your Universe so that you can feel good about being here, alive and thriving on this planet today. Not despite all the terrible things humanity has done, but because of all the good things we are here to do. I invite you to start your own personal journey towards becoming a happy, healthy, and mission driven Climate Optimist.

In The Climate Optimist Class #1 we will uncover why optimism is needed in the world today and how we can start changing our personal worlds through the practice of retruthing. I would love to see your retruthings as you go about and transform your worlds! Please tag me - @annetheresegennari and @heychangeworld and encourage friends and families to start #retruthing their worlds as well!

Hey Change Podcast - 48. A World in Need of Positive News
play

12/31/18 • 35 min

Why are positive news so important? That’s a topic we’re discussing with passion in todays episode with Georgina Powell, a true Eco-Warrior and the founder of positive news magazine Pebble. As a writer she found it frustrating that no-one was interested publishing things like sustainable fashion or environmental progress and innovations, and she thought that of course people must be willing to read about such positive things? Turns out she was right and Pebble, an online magazine with all things good news, has today reached 40,000 monthly readers and growing. In this episode we talk about how positive news have changed both of our lives but also how we feel that amazing shift that is happening all around us. Is the time finally here to be excited about positive change?

Let’s end 2018 with a bang! WOOP!

Pebble is an award-winning, fast growing digital magazine and community based in the UK - it's all about guilt-free pleasures - from ethical fashion to eco travel. Its founder Georgina Wilson-Powell has spent the last 16 years working as an editor and publisher for global food and travel brands before setting it up pebble in 2016. She wanted to use her media and communication skills to share positive stories that inspire change.

After an inner calling to visit the slum in Guatemala, Bethany Tran decided to quit her safe and well paying job at Comcast to start the Root Collective. Today she helps employ people and bring empowerment to individuals and communities in poor parts of Guatemala and the work has brought miracles already.

In this chat with me we talk about how crazy it can seem to follow a gut feeling that makes so sense, how women (even in America) often don’t understand that they are the ones who hold the key to change, and what being an empowered and conscious consumer really looks like. If you wish you had more power to change the world, this episode just might change your perception of what that power really is. Get ready to feel optimistic an uplifted, this is how you change the world.

Have you ever felt like the life you built for yourself wasn’t really what you thought it would be? Or have you maybe felt too pushed by society and expectations - both your own and others - to follow a certain path even though deep inside you know you’d rather do something else? And if so, have you ever considered just saying “heck with this” and go for it?

I know, it can seem super scary, but in this talk with Sinead Bovell, the top of her class business student who completely switched gears and decided to do her own thing, we talk about what it means to trust your intuition and follow your heart. Sinead is all about building that life for yourself that you are meant to live and to do the work you’re put on this earth to do, and so she started her own business to be able to educate and inspire other millennials to follow their own dreams.

She’s the model who talks tech, the girl boss who gets invited to attend meetings at the UN and hang out with presidents at Bloombergs Business Forum, and one of the most earth-bound and humble humans I’ve ever met. I’m super excited to share this talk with you guys, so get ready to feel inspired!

You know what time it is guys? It’s time to completely flip it all on its end and start redesigning everything. Because it’s not about reducing or reusing, it’s about redesigning. Not just the products we buy and the clothes we wear, but our whole society and how we operate as humans. Does this mean we need to go back in time and say thanks and good bye to consumerism for good? No, not al all! In fact, if you are to believe the cradle to cradle philosophy, shopping is not the issue. Because it’s not just what we do but how we do them - how can we redesign everything? But the exciting part is that we can do it and we have nature as our role model, showing us how.

The C2C School of Thought is characterized by a positive conception of man with a positive footprint: as beneficial organisms humans are a part of the environment. Old patterns of thinking are abandoned, while new paths towards “intelligent abundance" are established.

Do you know your carbon footprint? How would your everyday actions change if you did?

In this episode, we talk to Josie Stoker, a wonderful young woman from Britain who spent the last 7 years in Asia, where she worked alongside Indigenous communities to bring their knowledge to corporate leadership teams. Having seen first-hand the effects of climate change today, she became passionate about empowering people to turn eco-anxiety into eco-action, and she’s excited about the role technology can play in supporting everyday people in their ambitions to take climate action.

Today, Josie is CoFounder and CEO at Capture - a B2B helping companies build a planet-friendly workforce. It also serves as an app that anyone can download and use to start tracking his or her individual carbon footprint, so make sure to check it out!

In the episode:

  • How much ice do you actually melt when taking a flight?
  • Do individual actions actually matter and if so, why?
  • What is the difference is between climate change and environmental destruction?
  • What role should companies play in building a better world?
