After King Viserys' death, the Small Council plots to install Prince Aegon on the Iron Throne. Ser Criston Cole kills Lord Beesbury when he objects to Princess Rhaenyra being supplanted, while Lord Commander of the Kingsguard Harrold Westerling resigns in protest. Ser Otto delays announcing the king's death to fortify their position and demands nobles give fealty oaths. Queen Alicent, who learns that Otto always intended to install Aegon as king, fails to gain support from Princess Rhaenys, who is held captive in the castle. When Aegon disappears from the Red Keep, Otto has Kingsguards Ser Erryk and Ser Arryk search the city, while Alicent sends Criston and Prince Aemond. Mysaria, the White Worm, informs Otto that Aegon is hiding in the city's sept, but Criston and Aemond apprehend him after a brief fight. After Lord Larys Strong warns Alicent she is being spied upon, including by Tayla, she has Mysaria's house burned. Aegon insists he is unfit to rule, but Alicent convinces him otherwise, quoting his father's dying words. Meanwhile, Erryk smuggles Rhaenys from the castle while Otto has hundreds of common folk herded into the Dragonpit's main hall, announcing Viserys' death and crowning Aegon as king. Amid the commotion, Rhaenys reaches her dragon Meleys, then enters and demolishes the hall; she defiantly confronts the royal usurpers before fleeing on dragonback. Hosted on Acast. King Viserys and his court attend Lady Laena's funeral in Driftmark. Rhaenyra and Daemon reunite and are physically intimate. Prince Aemond claims Vhagar as his dragon, leading to an altercation with his cousins and nephews in which Lucerys slashes Aemond's eye with a knife. Viserys denies Queen Alicent's demand that Lucerys' eye be gouged out as retribution. When Alicent attempts to attack Lucerys, Rhaenyra blocks her; Alicent stabs Rhaenyra's arm in a struggle with Viserys' Valyrian steel dagger. After claims that Rhaenyra's children are bastards, Viserys decrees that anyone questioning their legitimacy will be silenced. Reinstated as Hand of the King, Otto Hightower tells Alicent they will soon prevail. Rhaenyra and Daemon unite against Alicent and her supporters. Ser Qarl Correy appears to murder Laenor, with Princess Rhaenys and Lord Corlys believing that the found charred body is their son's. Meanwhile, Daemon and Rhaenyra are privately married in the Old Valyrian tradition to continue the pure Targaryen bloodline. Following his faked death, Laenor, with his head shaved, secretly flees Driftmark with Ser Qarl.

Six years later, House Velaryon faces a succession crisis when Lord Corlys Velaryon is seriously wounded in the Stepstones. Vaemond Velaryon petitions King's Landing to remove Lucerys as Corlys' heir, proclaiming him illegitimate. Rhaenyra and Daemon return to the capital with all their children to defend Lucerys' claim. They discover that King Viserys is now bedridden and all royal affairs are managed by Queen Alicent and Ser Otto in his stead. Alicent covers up her married son Aegon raping a handmaiden. When Vaemond arrives in the Red Keep, Rhaenyra proposes an arrangement to gain Princess Rhaenys' support. She also requests that her father defend her succession, quoting Aegon the Conqueror's dream. The next day, Otto Hightower hears Vaemond Velaryon's petition that Driftmark pass to him. As Rhaenyra begins speaking, King Viserys arrives and declares Lucerys the heir to Driftmark. Enraged, Vaemond calls Rhaenyra's children bastards and is immediately decapitated by Daemon. That night, the Targaryens, Velaryons, and Hightowers attend a feast to mend their relations, but the princes start a fight. Viserys, near death, reveals parts of Aegon the Conqueror's dream to Alicent whom he mistakes for Rhaenyra, with Alicent believing that he is talking about her son, Aegon.
