Here's The Thing...

Kim Lukens: Teen Mentor

Here's the Thing is a podcast for teens that talks honestly and openly about the things their friends don't know and their Mom hasn't told them. Show host Kim Lukens is frequently joined by fellow Mom and Business owner Melissa Farnsworth. They remember exactly what it was like to be in their shoes and want to help them feel seen and heard in a world with great expectations but not a lot of emotional guidance. Kim's straightforward and fact-finding approach combined with Melissa's wicked humor and love of all things enneagram makes for an excellent combination as they chat candidly, answer questions and provide resources.

Here's The Thing... - S1E4: Teens, Enneagram and Self-Care
play

04/10/20 • 31 min

This episode provides a high-level introduction to Enneagram for teens 13+ with an overview of the nine motivation types, as well as their strengths and weaknesses.

We discuss the numbers "in a nutshell" and what self-care looks like. 'Ennea' is Greek for nine, and 'gram' is greek for figure or drawing. So the simple definition of Enneagram is a nine-pointed figure. It is nine ways of seeing and experiencing the world and helps us understand who we are and what motivates us. If you are interested in learning more about Enneagram, we strongly encourage you to read, study or listen to podcasts first, before taking the test. Materials and interviews with Casey McCollum is a great place to start. A good first book is The Road Back to You by Suzanne Stabile. And if you decide to take the test online, we recommend the one by Beth McCord on her

**EPISODE NOTE - Before airing, we did receive permission to share all of the stories that belonged to others. We believe it is important to always ask permission.

In this episode, we will talk about things that you don't like but you feel like you should. The things that you go along without of fear of breaking from what is popular or "socially" acceptable. Teens often find themselves following trends even when they don't understand them. We discuss the idea of knowing yourself and how powerful it can be to have the confidence to stay true to your inner voice.

We talk about being bold enough to start your own trends, learning your likes and dislikes, and the importance of paying attention to what you say yes to. Reference was made to the Netflix series To All The Boys I've Loved Before.

Quick Episode Summary:

  • You don't have to like what everyone else likes
  • Melissa's family hates water parks
  • Kim's terrible Disney memory
