Hellbent for Horror - Episode 097- Christmas Ghost Story 2020: The Derelict
play

01/12/21 • 72 min

Just when you thought all the celebration is over, H4H finds one last present hidden under the sofa!

The Annual (although late) Christmas Ghost Story!

Actually, it's more like it got kicked under the sofa by the amazing amount of chaos that this past year brought.

This year we are offering you William Hope Hodgson's THE DERELICT to chill your bones! It's a creepy story about the unknown dangers of the open sea and I think you'll realize how this story might have influenced the works of H.P. Lovecraft!

This was recorded in December of 2020 but was unfortunately delayed over technical issues. We are happy to present it in its entirety.

I hope you enjoy the show!

In the world of genre and fandom, the universal currency is passion. Fans of different genres normally would not mix, but there are areas of overlap, LIKE a GENRE VENN DIAGRAM. Join me and H4H producer, Lisa Gorski, as we discuss the overlap between two of the most passionate fandoms, HORROR AND SCIENCE FICTION. Movies last a couple of hours, but you spend significant time with a book.

Reading is a direct upload of words that transition into your own images that go right to your brain. It can be powerful.

And horror books let you live with the scare and the thrill for days!

In this episode I talk about my love of reading, and how horror stories and books from the library deepened my love of horror, and helped me get to know myself.

Books were my salvation...and my corruption!

Some horrors are all too real, and we’re powerless to stop them.

Being bested by a one-celled organism can really put a person in his or her place.

In this episode I talk about REAL body horror, specifically the horror of outbreaks of illness.

Epidemics. Pandemics. They’ve been the topic of good and bad horror alike. I’m fascinated by the microscopic world, and that these tiny creatures outnumber me, you, all of us.

They were here before us, and they’ll be here long after we’re gone. It’s their world. And they’re much more powerful than us. In the beginning of the flu season, let’s talk about outbreaks of illness, and the horror they can provide.

Stephen King just hit the tip of the iceberg in The Stand.

Hellbent for Horror - Episode 026- More Volatile Substance: The Oscar Edition
play

It seems that when a movie with dark themes is marketed for mainstream appeal that the “horror” description goes out the window in favor of "suspense," "mystery," or “thriller.” There are lots of movies that are billed as “thrillers,” which are, in my opinion, horror movies, telling horror stories at their cores.

This is even more the case with movies that get nominated for Best Picture.

In this episode I make a case to categorize two Ocscar winners as Horror movies. I think that both Clint Eastwood’s Unforgiven and the Coen brothers’ No Country for Old Men are horror movies, and I’ll tell you why.

Thanks for listening.

A "Double Feature" that's so big, we needed TWO PODCASTS to tell it!

James Hancock (host of The Wrong Reel podcast) returns for Part 2 of our collaboration between our two podcasts, where we discuss the "monsters" at the heart of the movies of Roman Polanski.

Sometimes they’re literal monsters, sometimes they’re figurative, but each of these movies has at least one monster at their center.

Join us as we hunt down the monsters in three lesser-known Polanski films: 'The Fearless Vampire Hunters,' 'MacBeth,' and 'Bitter Moon!

Part One of our joint podcast discusses the "Apartment Trilogy" and you can listen to it here: WR253 – Roman Polanski’s Apartment Trilogy

Hellbent for Horror - Episode 053- All the Sins of the World: Extreme Horror
play

Extreme Horror Films: they are the "Elephant in the Room" for horror fans.

These films push the limits of the viewer to such the extent that they even divide the horror community on whether they go too far.

A large majority of these films have little, or no, socially redeeming value.

And yet...

There are a few extreme films that use the violence, and obscenity, and nihilism to create something that defies expectations and becomes something horrible/beautiful.

For those who dare to watch.

Guest Derrick Carey, from the Astro Radio Z podcast (and a horror film director himself), joins us to discuss some Extreme Horror films that aren't easy to dismiss...or forget.

I hope you enjoy the episode.
